Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-2-09: Alberto Castillo & Randy Flores Called Up To MLB; Edgar Gonzalez & Sean Danielson Activated; Joe Nelson DFA'd

Alberto Castillo (Orioles):
The Orioles use the first day of September to expand their roster and flesh out some of the weaker elements of their team. Baltimore dipped down to Triple-A Norfolk to add reserve outfielder Jeff Fiorentino and relievers Matt Albers, Dennis Sarfate and Alberto Castillo for the final month of the season.

Kevin Mulvey (Diamondbacks):
The D-backs claimed Kevin Mulvey off waivers from the Twins' organization and will send cash considerations to Minnesota for the right-hander. Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-13-09: Josh Phelps Signs Deal; Michel Hernandez & Chris Duncan Outrighted; Sidney Ponson Released; Rick Eckstein Suspended

Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
So Dave Allen over at FanGraphs recently picked up on something I’d noticed back in May, which is that Jamie Moyer is throwing a heck of a lot more fastballs than his usual norm. Which is not a good thing when your fastball maxes out at about 82 mph.
Ump Bump

To address one of the issues floating around the Moyersphere in the wake of his angry comments yesterday, yes, his contract is laden with incentives based on innings-pitched and appearanced. But no, the team was not likely in any way influenced by money when it decided to bump Moyer out of the rotation.

Jamie Moyer is a man without answers these days.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-4-09: Kiko Calero Begins Rehab; Coco Crisp Moved to 60-Day D.L.; Chad Paronto Activated; Mike Rose Hits D.L.

Felipe Lopez, Dan Haren, & Blaine Boyer(Diamondbacks):
Felipe Lopez - Has been everything the Diamondbacks expected when they signed him to a one-year deal to replace Orlando Hudson. Has some value despite his mental lapses. Atlanta needs help at second base.

Dan Haren - If the Diamondbacks had done anything to this point as a team, he'd probably be a lock for the NL starter at the All-Star Game.

Blaine Boyer - Been around only a month and can fill several bullpen roles, but probably not part of the long-term plan.
AZ Central

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
Who's No. 2? We asked this question of one front-office man this week: If Holliday is, theoretically, the best bat in this market, who's likely to be the second-best bat? His surprising answer: "Josh Willingham?" OK, that was a very tentative answer, based on the shape of the market right now. Two other names the same exec nominated were just as surprising. Russell Branyan, if Seattle makes him available, was one. The other? "I would have said Miguel Tejada," he said. "But I don't see the Astros doing any selling."

Ex-Cardinals Watch 5-21-09: Mike Smith Signs Deal, Blaine Neal & Mike Rose Both Reassigned, Coco Crisp Hurting, Cecil Cooper Tossed

Cecil Cooper (Astros MGR):
Just when it looked as if the Astros would add some insurance to their lead over the Brewers on Thursday, an out call on a play at the plate by umpire Delfin Colon resulted in fireworks from Lance Berkman and Cecil Cooper, ending in the ejection of both the first baseman and manager. The call would prove costly, as the Astros would lose by one run, 4-3.
