Albert Pujols' Friday Rarity

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was on base four times against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. His damage was caused via a pair of walks, one clearly intentional, a double that was played into a triple by Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano and Pujols’ world-leading 32nd home run of the season.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 6-28-09: Cody Haerther & Carmen Cali Released; Daric Barton Optioned Out; Blaine Neal Hits D.L.; Jose Salazar Signs Deal

Rene Lachemann (Rockies MiLB Coach):
As evidenced by the ever-present orange toothpick, old habits die hard for Rene Lachemann.
Colorado Springs Gazette

Jose Salazar (Shreveport-Bossier):
Hit by a slew of injuries to its pitching staff recently, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains made a series of roster moves this week, including signing rookie righthanded pitcher Jimmy Heard, who played at Airline High School in Bossier City and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. He is joined by fellow rookie Josh Collazo, an infielder out of Oklahoma Baptist University (NAIA) and third-year shortstop Jose Salazar, who last played in the triple-A level Mexican League.
The Raw Feed

Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
Ellis' comeback pushes Adam Kennedy off second base. Kennedy, who is batting a team-best .294, has been taking grounders at third base during batting practice. He was breaking in a new first baseman's mitt Friday afternoon.

Kennedy said he doesn't have a preference for which position he plays. He added that he's least familiar with third base, as he hasn't played a Major League game at the position.
Athletics Official Site

Tomo Ohka (Indians):
Not this time. Ohka got hammered in a four-run second inning that set the tone for the night.

"Tomo battled," manager Eric Wedge said. "He just didn't have the same command we've seen in prior outings."
Indians Official Site

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
First baseman Russell Branyan also hit a home run, his 19th of the season, a majestic blast to right-center in the ninth inning that had a 7.2 second hang time.
Mariners Official Site

David Eckstein (Padres):
The gloves David Eckstein wears while hitting may smell bad and look funny, but he doesn't plan on changing them any time.
Padres Official Site

Cody Haerther (Free Agent):
The Toronto Blue Jays released him Saturday. Haerther was playing at Double-A New Hampshire where he was hitting .220 (29-for-132) with six doubles, one triple, one home run, 13 RBIs, 40 total bases, 13 runs, 14 walks, and 21 strikeouts in 43 games.

Blaine Neal (Indians):
Triple-A Charlotte placed him on the 7-day disabled list.

Carmen Cali (Free Agent):
The Los Angeles Dodgers released him Saturday. Cali was pitching at Triple-A Albuquerque where he made nine relief appearances and posted an 0-1 record and 4.22 ERA. He allowed 17 hits, five earned runs, one home run, two walks, and struck out 14 over 10. innings. He also pitched at Double-A Chattanooga earlier in the season.

Daric Barton (Athletics):
Was optioned back to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 6-19-09: Larry Walker To The Canadian Hall Of Fame; Zach Pitts Released Again; Jim Leyland Gets Extension

Coco Crisp (Royals):
Royals outfielder Coco Crisp could be heading for season-ending surgery if an upcoming examination confirms the injury to his right shoulder as a torn labrum _ as is now feared _ instead of a strained rotator cuff.
Kansas City Star

Larry Walker (Retired):
When Larry Walker is enshrined Saturday in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, it will renew the debate about who is the greatest Canadian-born player to have played in the major leagues.
The Globe & Mail

Braden Looper (Brewers):
Milwaukee wasn't the only city pelted by rain on Friday. Brewers starter Braden Looper might have been the only one on either side of Lake Michigan who wanted it to keep on falling.
Brewers Official Site

Tomo Ohka (Indians):
On the rung of Japanese pitching prospects to hit the Major Leagues, Tomo Ohka ranks several notches below compatriots Hideo Nomo and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Indians Official Site

Joe Girardi (Yankess MGR):
The most infamous conversation Joe Girardi and Jeffrey Loria had occurred just down a corridor from where the two men stood prior to Friday's game. Girardi, then the manager of the Marlins, and Loria, the owner of the team, engaged in an argument in 2006 after umpires warned Girardi about Loria's incessant heckling.
Marlins Official Site

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Regardless what the numbers say, it's not as if Rockies right-hander Jason Marquis has been touched by magic. On Friday night, for example, the sinker was the only pitch he had working.

Jim Leyland (Tigers MGR):
Jim Leyland's future will remain in a Tiger uniform. The team and the manager agreed Friday to a two-year contract extension, ending speculation while rewarding the veteran skipper for a first-place start with a team that has had no shortage of challenges.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 6-11-09: Blaine Neal & Mark Johnson Hit D.L.; Jose Garcia Activated; Pablo Ozuna Suspended; Dennis Dove Coaching

Pablo Ozuna (Phillies):
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Philadelphia Phillies Minor League infielder Pablo Ozuna has received a 50-game suspension after showing an elevated Testosterone/Epitestosterone ratio, a performance-enhancing substance violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The Biz Of Baseball

Dennis Dove (Georgia Southern Volunteer Asst.):
Dennis Dove and Carlos Love haven't forgotten the feeling, the goose bumps brought on by the chance to play baseball against the nation's best.
Savannah Morning News

Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
Jack Hannahan started the comeback with a leadoff triple. Twins right fielder Michael Cuddyer made what Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire flatly stated was an ill-advised attempt to catch it, but a single would have done the trick for Oakland there, too. After Orlando Cabrera's RBI single to center, Kennedy hammered a 2-0 pitch from previously stingy Twins starter Nick Blackburn out to right.
Athletics Official Site

Max Scherzer (Diamondbacks):
The evolution of Max Scherzer has been on display all season, and Thursday afternoon, the right-handed pitcher ventured into uncharted territory.
Diamondbacks Official Site

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
With a 4-4 mark heading into Friday's matchup against the Astros, Dan Haren's win-loss record implies he's having an ordinary season on the mound. The rest of his numbers show why he is now the D-backs staff ace and one of the top pitchers in the National League.
Diamondbacks Official Site

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
Russell Branyan homered and drove in three runs, Olson turned in a workman-like five innings and the Mariners rallied for a 6-3 victory over the Orioles on Thursday.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 5-21-09: Mike Smith Signs Deal, Blaine Neal & Mike Rose Both Reassigned, Coco Crisp Hurting, Cecil Cooper Tossed

Cecil Cooper (Astros MGR):
Just when it looked as if the Astros would add some insurance to their lead over the Brewers on Thursday, an out call on a play at the plate by umpire Delfin Colon resulted in fireworks from Lance Berkman and Cecil Cooper, ending in the ejection of both the first baseman and manager. The call would prove costly, as the Astros would lose by one run, 4-3.
Astros Official Site

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):

Ex-Cardinals Watch 5-11-09: Blaine Neal Signs Deal, Book On Mike Coolbaugh's Life Released, Felipe Lopez Falls Short Of Cycle, Brian Esposito Reassign

Darren Oliver (Angels):
Before Shields' overpowering work, Darren Oliver had delivered seven outs with his customary aplomb.

There is not a cooler customer in the game than the 38-year-old left-hander, and his presence can be soothing to younger teammates trying to make an impression.

"Darren's just a great guy to have on your staff, in every way," Jason Bulger said. "He's so calm and relaxed and so open about sharing his knowledge."

If Oliver is the glue, the 'pen came apart for a spell when he was forced into a brief fling as a starter. His four innings in Minnesota on April 18 -- he was excellent, yielding only one run -- resulted in a triceps strain that put him on the 15-day disabled list.

But Oliver is back, bringing stability to middle relief and humor to the bullpen.

"Darren's been consistent," Scioscia said. "He got seven outs [on Sunday, after starter Shane Loux had struggled]. I thought he stopped the bleeding, being able to make pitches. He had the [low] pitch count to give us two innings, and Shields needed only six pitches to get through the seventh.
Angels Official Site

Felipe Lopez (Diamondbacks):
Felipe Lopez starred for the D-backs offensively by coming within a triple of a cycle against his former team, while Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds also went deep against Bronson Arroyo (5-2).
Diamondbacks Official Site

Blaine Neal (Indians):
On Monday, the club announced that it had signed right-handed reliever Blaine Neal to a Minor League deal and assigned him to Triple-A Columbus. The 31-year-old Neal hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2005 with the Red Sox and Rockies, and he's coming off a 2008 season with Triple-A Toledo in the Tigers' system.

Luke Gregerson & Luis Perdomo (Padres):
When pitching coach Darren Balsley looks at the composition of San Diego's bullpen, he sees eight relievers, many of them short on experience, confidence and, most importantly, results.

The Free Agents Who Could Excel In New Roles

Felipe Lopez- The versatile infielder had a good showing after being dealt to the Cardinals in 2009. If anything, he plays great defense and could double as a shortstop. In 43 games he hit .385 with 21 RBIs for the Cardinals (in 100 games, he only had 25 for the Nationals). It would be smart for the Orioles to sign Felipe Lopez to play shortstop next season. I say just offer a one year deal, and see where it goes from there. Baltimore was scouting him heavily before he was dealt to St. Louis.
