Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-29-09: Javier Brito & Chad Gabriel Picked Up For 2010; Brandon Garner Activated; Jason Marquis Aiming For Playoffs

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
The remarkable Colorado Rockies are making their push to the playoffs, which should come as no surprise because, after all, Jason Marquis is on the team. This is his 10th major league season, for his fourth major league team, and the clubs he's been on have made the playoffs every year.
ESPN

Chris Lambert (Orioles):
For now, though, they'll likely call up another arm or two that can help in relief. Big league veterans Matt Albers and Chris Waters could figure in that picture, and newly acquired starter Chris Lambert could also get the call.
Orioles Official Site

Brett Tomko & Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
"It's tough," said Tomko, who was leading, 6-1, when he left the game after allowing four hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. "The bad call at first base didn't help, but you can't give a team like that a couple extra outs."
Athletics Official Site

Daric Barton (Athletics):
Daric Barton made a splashy big league debut in 2007, hitting well over .300 after a late-season callup, but he struggled mightily in his first full season in the Majors, batting .226 in 140 games last year.
Athletics Official Site

Jack Wilson (Mariners):
This hasn't been the smoothest transition for Mariners shortstop Jack Wilson.
Mariners Official Site

David Eckstein (Padres):
Down, 1-0, going into that frame, Will Venable brought in a run with a single up the middle, Blanks blasted a two-run homer to straightaway center field -- though he got hurt rounding first base -- and Everth Cabrera and David Eckstein gave the Padres a four-run lead with RBI singles.
Padres Official Site

Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
Moyer was given a rousing cheer when he exited after throwing 4 1/3 innings in relief and allowing four hits, one earned run while striking out five. It was Moyer's second win as a reliever this season and his first two since 1996 when he pitched for the Red Sox.

Brett Tomko (Free Agent):
Released by Yankees.
Star Ledger Twitter

Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
The non-waiver Trade Deadline is Friday afternoon, so it's certainly possible that Orlando Cabrera and Adam Kennedy will be wearing other clubs' uniforms by Saturday. If that's the case, at least they can say they went out on a high note.
Athletics Official Site

Jack Wilson (Mariners):
The Mariners acquired shortstop Jack Wilson and righty Ian Snell from the Pirates in a seven-player trade Wednesday, sending five players, including former No. 1 Draft choice Jeff Clement, to Pittsburgh.
Mariners Official Site

When Jack Wilson entered the Mariners' dugout in the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon, Ken Griffey Jr. welcomed him in his own Junior way.

It was an odd scene, a rushed one, too, at AT&T Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants ushered Freddy Sanchez into an impromptu press conference after slipping a Giants jersey over his head. Minutes before, Sanchez had been in the dugout with his Pirates teammates. Now he was preparing to enter the thick of a pennant race.

Julian Tavarez (Free Agent):
Right-hander Julian Tavarez, who was designated for assignment on July 19, cleared waivers on Wednesday and is officially a free agent.

Jeff Brantley & Chris Sabo (Retired):
The Reds announced Wednesday their Hall of Fame Ballot for the Class of 2010 and fans will get the chance to vote for more than one candidate for the first time.

Jim Leyland (Tigers):
Tigers manager Jim Leyland says he's fine with his team, whether it makes a trade or not before Friday's non-waiver Trade Deadline at 4 p.m. ET. He just wants to see it relax and play well.
Tigers Official Site

Mike Timlin (Rockies):
The Rockies continue to stockpile arms, signing free agent Mike Timlin. The reliever is in short-season Casper after throwing well in three separate workouts with the Rockies last week at Coors Field.

Jose Garcia (Newark):
The Newark Bears of the Atlantic League placed him on the disabled list.

Andy Cavazos (Free Agent):

Ex-Cardinal Watch 6-2-09: Chris Richard, So Taguchi, & Stuart Pomeranz All Activated; Kip Wells & Sidney Ponson Hit D.L.; Jack Wilson Rumors Pick Up

Jack Wilson (Pirates):
Fix the shortstop position. I’ve already suggested Washington’s Cristian Guzman as one possible target. He’s a good bat and a dependable, if average, defensive shortstop. Another fit could be Pittsburgh’s Jack Wilson, one of the unsung great defensive players in baseball over the last six or so seasons.
Kansas City Star

The Royals are kicking around the idea of adding a shortstop, but what are their options? The Astros' Miguel Tejada is no longer adequate defensively. The A's Orlando Cabrera and Bobby Crosby have been terrible offensively. The Mariners' Yuniesky Betancourt is hardly an upgrade. Best fit: The Pirates' Jack Wilson, but only if the Red Sox don't grab Wilson first.
Fox Sports

Mark Mulder (Free Agent):
Free-agent left-hander Mark Mulder, coming off shoulder surgery, could be ready to pitch in the majors shortly after the All-Star break; he has been working to resume his proper mechanics.
Fox Sports

Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
The A's could move Adam Kennedy from second base to third once Mark Ellis returns from a strained left calf. Kennedy, batting .390 with a 1.184 OPS in 93 plate appearances, has been the A's best since player since the team acquired him for infielder Joe Dillon on May 8. Ellis is not eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list until the end of June.
Fox Sports

Felipe Lopez (Diamondbacks):
After missing five days because of hamstring tightness, second baseman Felipe Lopez started for the third consecutive game Monday, but Hinch doesn't think Lopez is back to normal just yet.

"I don't think he looks completely confident and comfortable, but at the same time it's obviously playable and he can deal with it," Hinch said.

Hinch took Lopez out of Sunday's game in the seventh inning and might give him a day off soon.
AZ Central

Cesar Izturis (Orioles):
Izturis is fifth at shortstop, with 178,701 votes, according to voting results released by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for the July 14 game in St. Louis.
Orioles Official Site

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
Haren walked off the mound after getting Andre Ethier to ground out to end the seventh completely spent. The right-hander had thrown 110 pitches in allowing just two hits.
Diamondbacks Official Site

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
In the Mariners' seemingly never-ending quest to get their offense going, they turned to a somewhat unlikely source on Tuesday night to bat in the No. 2 hole: their usual No. 5 hitter, Russell Branyan.
Mariners Official Site

Kip Wells (Nationals):
In other news, the Nationals activated outfielder Elijah Dukes from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and placed right-hander Kip Wells on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Sunday, with a right adductor strain.
Nationals Official Site

David Eckstein (Padres):
As a teammate, Padres second baseman David Eckstein was appalled that Adrian Gonzalez was called out in the ninth inning of Monday's loss to the Phillies when he over slid second base and was tagged out by Phils shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
Padres Official Site

Troy Percival (Rays):
Ever since Troy Percival went on the disabled list May 22, the Rays have not had a closer. And with the chances of Percival returning seemingly remote, the Rays will go with a bullpen-by-committee approach.
Rays Official Site

Sidney Ponson (Royals):
Ponson last pitched against Chicago last Friday, when he faced six batters but got just one out, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk. He is 1-5 with a 7.27 ERA in 11 games, the first six of them starts. His 15 days on the DL began retroactively on Saturday.

Ponson said he first experienced pain and inflammation in his elbow in that game.

Chris Richard (Rays):
Triple-A Durham activated him from the 7-day disabled list.

So Taguchi (Cubs):
Triple-A Iowa activated him from the 7-day disabled list.

Stuart Pomeranz (New Jersey):

Ex-Cardinals Watch 4-29-09: Ron Flores, Omar Pena, & Jose Mateo Sign Deals; Rich Rundles Called Up, Dan Kantrovitz Studying At Harvard

Mark Mulder (Free Agent):
Former Mariner/White Sox/Tigers right-hander Freddy Garcia is the latest veteran starting pitcher available – and the Angels have no more interest in him than they have in Pedro Martinez, Mark Mulder, et al.
Orange County Register

Cecil Cooper (Astros):
Astros manager Cecil Cooper received a call Tuesday from baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson, who will review Cooper’s conduct after he was ejected Saturday by plate umpire Mike DiMuro.
Houston Chronicle

Jack Wilson (Pirates):
Jack Wilson will take off another five or six days to reduce the swelling in the shortstop's sprained middle finger on his left hand before trying to hit. That was the order from hand specialist Dr. Mark Baratz after examining Wilson in Pittsburgh yesterday. Once the swelling subsides, Wilson will resume hitting and, if that goes well, try catching the ball with that hand.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Darren Oliver (Angels):
Darren Oliver (strained left triceps) threw a bullpen session, and said he is "feeling better every day." Oliver is expected to be ready when he is eligible to come off the DL Monday.
LA Times

Dan Kantrovitz (Retired):
Things have a way of coming full circle for Dan Kantrovitz, which is why it’s no surprise that he’s found his way to Harvard.
The Harvard Crimson

Cesar Izturis (Orioles):
Aside from a few scattered Interleague games, Angels infielder Maicer Izturis hasn't gotten the chance to regularly play against his older half-brother, Cesar. So when Cesar, 29, signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Orioles in December, Maicer circled the Angels' early-season trip to Camden Yards on his calendar.
Angels Official Site

Rich Rundles & Anthony Reyes (Indians):
Left-handed reliever Rich Rundles was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to take Hafner's 25-man roster spot, but that is likely just a temporary move in the wake of the burden placed on the 'pen by Anthony Reyes' two-inning start against the Red Sox on Tuesday. The Indians are expected to make another roster move -- or perhaps multiple moves -- in advance of the weekend series in Detroit to bring in a position player.
Indians Official Site

Fernando Tatis (Mets):
Tatis hit his first home run in the sixth -- it was ruled a home run after the umpires reviewed replays at the request of the Marlins -- creating the lead Putz didn't protect.
Mets Official Site

Julian Tavarez & Kip Wells (Nationals):
So one of the first moves Rizzo made in March was signing right-hander Julian Tavarez, 35, to a Minor League deal. It turned out to be a good one, as Tavarez has emerged as the best reliever on the Nationals. Entering Thursday's game against the Cardinals, Tavarez has a 2.79 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings.
Nationals Official Site

J.D. Drew (Red Sox):
Red Sox manager Terry Francona had to do a fast shuffle of his starting lineup Wednesday.
