Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-18-09: Reid Gorecki Called Up; Justin Knoedler & Timo Perez Sign Deals; Chris Narveson To Begin Rehab; Eddie Degerman Released

Clint Hurdle (Free Agent):
Former Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle is always profound. He said the greatest thing someone can do for somebody they care for is to eliminate distractions and allow them to focus. That's why he isn't bitter about being dismissed as the team's skipper -- he saw himself as a distraction. Now he's the Rockies biggest fan and thinks they will make the playoffs.
CBS Denver

Brett Tomko (Athletics):
The 36-year-old right-hander held New York to five hits over five innings, leading the A's to a 3-0 series-opening win.

Reid Gorecki (Braves):
What was supposed to be a day off after what had been a long grind in the Minors turned into a day that Reid Gorecki will never forget.
Bowman's Blog

Max Scherzer (Diamondbacks):
Scherzer allowed nine runs (three earned) and committed a costly throwing error in a sloppy third inning as the D-backs dropped a makeup game, 9-4, at Turner Field. The game was originally the final game of a three-game series that was rained out on May 17.

Justin Knoedler (White Sox):
The Chicago White Sox signed him to a minor league deal and assisgned him to Triple-A Charlotte.

Chris Narveson (Brewers):
Assigned from Triple-A Nashville to Rookie-Level Helena to begin rehab.

Timo Perez (New Jersey):
The New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am league signed him to a deal for the remainder of the 2009 season.

Justin Knoff (Lincoln):
The Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am League traded him to the Saltdogs of the American Association.

Eddie Degerman (Free Agent):
The River City Rascals of the Frontier League released him. He made one start allowing three hits, two earned runs, two walks, two wild pitches, and striking out six over three innings and earning the loss.

Brian Daubach (New Hampshire MGR):
Sitting in his office in the bowels of Holman Stadium, former Red Sox Brian Daubach, wearing camouflage uniform pants, looks more like a Desert Storm trooper than a Dirt Dog.
Boston Globe

Russ Springer (Rays):
There were plenty of Rays playing with their kids during Sunday's Family Day at Tropicana Field.
St. Petersburg Times

Chris Lambert (Tigers):
Meanwhile, just when you figured the draft wouldn't affect the Mud Hens just yet, it cost them their scheduled Tuesday starter, too. The Tigers designated Chris Lambert's contract for assignment Monday, presumably to make room for Jacob Turner on the 40-man roster. Because Turner signed a Major League deal, he immediately goes on the 40-man, even though he won't be pitching in games for a while. We know it wasn't to make room for Aubrey Huff, because the Tigers announced they moved Joel Zumaya to the 60-day DL for that.

Justin Knoff (Sussex):
When word that Matt Petrusek had been released got around the Skyhawks dugout Sunday afternoon, no one felt his pain, the dejection -- and the promise -- more than Justin Knoff.
New Jersey Herald

Chris Narveson (Brewers):
He was outrighted off the 40-man roster to Triple-A Nashville.

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
Being a veteran, Dan Haren knew not to get his hopes up.

Jim Riggleman (Nationals MGR):
Jim Riggleman loves to manage. In fact, he went so far as to say that managing the Nationals would be an ideal situation for him because he grew up in Rockville, Md.

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Rockies first-time All-Stars Brad Hawpe -- a right fielder -- and Jason Marquis -- a right-handed pitcher -- consider themselves men of action. They save the words for those who matter most: their teammates.

Dmitri Young (Nationals):
The Potomac Nationals announced after their 7-3 victory against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday that Washington Nationals' first baseman Dmitri Young will be joining the team for Tuesday afternoon's 12:05 ET game against the Hillcats.

Terry Evans (Angels):
Salt Lake's Terry Evans advanced to the second round with five home runs, but only connected for one more. Lehigh Valley's Andy Tracy was the third player to rack up five home runs in the first round, but his 15 regular-season homers were not enough to overcome the tiebreaker against Duncan's 21 and Evans' 17, so he did not advance.
MiLB

Ryan Bird (Southern Illinois):
The Frontier League is proud to announce the rosters for the 17th Annual Frontier League All-Star Game, to be played at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Illinois on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 7:05 P.M. The teams will be divided into squads representing the East Division and West Division.
