Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-5-09: Dan Haren Feeling Better; Clayton Mortensen Improves In Latest MLB Start; Jeff Suppan Takes No-Hitter In 5th

Cecil Cooper (Astros MGR):
I figured Drayton McLane would fire Cecil Cooper on Thursday, then call a news conference to announce the Astros were ready to be champions in 2010.
Houston Chronicle

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
The biggest reason that Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren has been able to get back on track? For pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr., that's easy.
Arizona Republic

If that was Haren's worst stuff, Arizona will take it. He lasted six innings and gave up only the two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight. Riding a three-game wining streak at Coors Field and facing the Rockies for the fourth time this season, Haren realized early he needed to change course to be effective against them.
Diamondbacks Official Site

Jim Riggleman (Nationals MGR):
One morning last week, just hours after another of his team's recent losses, Jim Riggleman began his day same as always: coffee, newspaper. Riggleman is a baseball man, his life set to its daily patterns, but he also likes constancy, and right now his job provides precious little of it. So Riggleman uses his mornings to compensate.
Washington Post

Clayton Mortensen (Athletics):
Mortensen was fairly pleased, too, having posted a respectable line of four runs on six hits and three walks while throwing 100 pitches over seven innings. And he, like Suzuki, knew exactly what the problem was while he gave up four of those hits and two of the walks during the fateful frame.
Athletics Official Site

Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
San Francisco, meanwhile, made the most of what Milwaukee gave it. Jeff Suppan didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and took a shutout into the sixth, when he walked two batters and watched both of them score after Cameron couldn't come up with Nate Schierholtz's tricky, sinking line drive.
Brewers Official Site

Jack Wilson (Mariners):
Jack Wilson got things going in the second inning with two outs against A's starter Clayton Mortensen with a two-run single, which was followed by back-to-back RBI hits by Ichiro Suzuki -- now four hits shy of 2,000 hits for his Major League career -- and Franklin Gutierrez to make it a 4-0 game.
Mariners Official Site

Kip Wells (Reds):
Making the Majors wasn't hard for Kip Wells. He did it with the Chicago White Sox the season after being a first-round Draft choice in 1998.
Reds Official Site

Tomo Ohka (Indians):
Sponichi mentions Tomo Ohka, Yasuhiko Yabuta, and Masahide Kobayashi as guys the BayStars could look at. Ohka spent time with Yokohama early in his career, but requested and was granted his release to pursue a shot at the Majors.
NBP Tracker

Isaias Garcia & Ryan Riddle (Fort Worth):
The Fort Worth Cats of the American Association excersied their 2010 option.

Stuart Pomeranz & Timo Perez (New Jersey):
The New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League activated Pomeranz, then exercised his and Perez's 2010 options.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 4-8-09: Adam Daniels, Isaias Garcia, Stuart Pomeranz, & Kris Honel Sign Deals; Ronnie Belliard Injured

Ronnie Belliard (Nationals):
After I'm done filing the game story from this latest defeat (Marlins 6, Nats 4 - with plenty of drama in the ninth), I'll post a thick recap of reaction, odds and ends. But I wanted to first provide an injury update.
The Washington Post

Fernando Tatis (Mets):
Fernando Tatis may start at second base when the team faces a right-handed starter.
Mets Blog

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Coors Field has been good to new Rockies right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis. He is 3-0 with a 2.51 ERA in five starts. To top that, he has a .400 batting average (4-for-10) with a double.
Rockies Official Site

Cardinals' All-Prospect Lineup: Pick A 2B

There aren’t many players here early this morning at Roger Dean Stadium, what with it being one of the many off days of this spring training. But right now, as I type this, out in the cages that are adjacent to the clubhouse is one of the prospects who has shined this spring: Tyler Greene.

2008 Palm Beach Cardinals Season Review

The 2008 Palm Beach Cardinals played the year like a seasoned card player, knowing who to throw and when to use their aces. And who better to do it than a veteran manager like Gaylen Pitts? Pitts is the current winningest manager in Palm Beach history and a Florida State League post-season all-star honoree as a coach.
