Scouting Report: Jaime Garcia

There’s a lot of reason to be excited about Jaime Garcia. After being selected in the 22nd round of the 2005 draft, Garcia pitched very well in 2006, held his own as a 21 year old in AA in 2007 and made it all the way to the majors as a 22 year old pitcher. He suffered an elbow strain toward the end of 2007 that the club chose to treat with rehab only to see the ligament tear the following year. Since having Tommy John surgery last year, Garcia has begun working his way back with rehab starts at various levels of the system.

Former Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle is always profound. He said the greatest thing someone can do for somebody they care for is to eliminate distractions and allow them to focus. That's why he isn't bitter about being dismissed as the team's skipper -- he saw himself as a distraction. Now he's the Rockies biggest fan and thinks they will make the playoffs.

Max Scherzer (Diamondbacks):
Scherzer allowed nine runs (three earned) and committed a costly throwing error in a sloppy third inning as the D-backs dropped a makeup game, 9-4, at Turner Field. The game was originally the final game of a three-game series that was rained out on May 17.

Justin Knoedler (White Sox):
The Chicago White Sox signed him to a minor league deal and assisgned him to Triple-A Charlotte.

Chris Narveson (Brewers):
Assigned from Triple-A Nashville to Rookie-Level Helena to begin rehab.

Timo Perez (New Jersey):
The New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am league signed him to a deal for the remainder of the 2009 season.

Justin Knoff (Lincoln):
The Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am League traded him to the Saltdogs of the American Association.

Eddie Degerman (Free Agent):
The River City Rascals of the Frontier League released him. He made one start allowing three hits, two earned runs, two walks, two wild pitches, and striking out six over three innings and earning the loss.

Brian Daubach (New Hampshire MGR):
Sitting in his office in the bowels of Holman Stadium, former Red Sox Brian Daubach, wearing camouflage uniform pants, looks more like a Desert Storm trooper than a Dirt Dog.

Chris Lambert (Tigers):
Meanwhile, just when you figured the draft wouldn't affect the Mud Hens just yet, it cost them their scheduled Tuesday starter, too. The Tigers designated Chris Lambert's contract for assignment Monday, presumably to make room for Jacob Turner on the 40-man roster. Because Turner signed a Major League deal, he immediately goes on the 40-man, even though he won't be pitching in games for a while. We know it wasn't to make room for Aubrey Huff, because the Tigers announced they moved Joel Zumaya to the 60-day DL for that.

I think it started to change after they made four errors in a July 24 loss to the Padres. Riggleman was upset and lectured his players after that game. From that point on, the Nationals played better baseball, winning 12 of their next 16 games. I've always believed that a little old-school yelling can't hurt once in a while.

Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
The Phillies announced Monday afternoon that Martinez, who they signed to a prorated $2 million contract last month, will make his Phillies debut Wednesday night against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Moyer, whose 40 wins since 2006 leads the Phillies, has been moved to the bullpen.
