Nothing exemplifies the Hot Stove season quite like worrying about the Rule 5 draft. Most of the players don't stick it out all year; most of the ones that do are eventually traded for Ronnie Belliard or Blaine Boyer; and most of the time it would be completely absurd to spend time thinking about this. Fangraphs won't return my calls, but according to my new WARP/seconds-in-your-limited-lifespan converter most of these guys peak around fifteen, twenty seconds. (Brian Barton, simply because his nickname was briefly "Enunciate It", broke the curve at forty-five.)

He allowed 17 hits, five earned runs, one home run, two walks, and struck out 14 over 10. innings. He also pitched at Double-A Chattanooga earlier in the season.

The Dodgers are uneasy about the ability of their bullpen to the point where Jeff Weaver -- currently throwing at triple-A Albuquerque -- is on their radar, Dodgers Manager Joe Torre said.
"He's been coming up in conversation," Torre said of Weaver, 32, who is scheduled to start for Albuquerque on Saturday. If Weaver did join the big-league club, the right-hander could be used for relief or "if we need somebody to fill in for a starter," Torre said.

Former Cardinals Carmen Cali & Jeff Weaver Among Non-Roster Invite Pitchers In Dodgers Camp
Carmen Cali, 30, LHP: He's one of a group trying to win the second lefty bullpen job Joe Beimel filled last year. He has played parts of three Major League seasons in 2004-05 (Cardinals) and 2007 (Twins), posting a 6.55 ERA in a combined 50 games and spent the entire 2008 season with Minnesota's Triple-A Rochester club, going 5-1 with two saves and a 4.52 ERA in 50 games (two starts).
Jeff Weaver, 32, RHP: He is a veteran of nine Major League seasons, including two with the Dodgers from 2004-05 after being acquired from the Yankees in the Kevin Brown deal. He went 27-24 with a 4.11 ERA in 68 Dodgers starts. He is 93-114 with a 4.72 ERA in 284 career games. He hit hard times after leaving the Dodgers, helped St. Louis win the World Series in 2006, but spent all of 2008 in the Minor Leagues. He's now able to relieve and could be a replacement for swingman Park.

Former Isotopes' fan favorite Val Pascucci was among 15 free agents who signed with the Dodgers and could appear on the 2009 Albuquerque roster, the Triple-A club said Thursday.

Trever Miller Watch: A Nation Holds It's Breath
This is almost certainly the least suspenseful contract jockeying of all time. Trever Miller is not a bad pitcher, and I don't mean to act like he is, but his inconsistency from year to year, when combined with his low upside, makes him indistinguishable, to me, from any of the minor league fliers that the Cardinals could take heading into the season. He might help you out some, he might hurt you a little, but he's probably not going to put you on his left arm and say "don't worry about it, boys—this is my team now" anytime soon.
