Mets Decline To Pick Up Johan Santana's Option
Excitement was palpable on the February morning nearly six years ago when Johan Santana first slipped a Mets jersey over his shoulders. One of Santana's agents, Peter Greenberg, said that day Santana was confident he would cash in the deal's seventh-year option, increasing its total value from $137.5 million to $157 million.

Irrational Trades Are Bad Trades
Spite -- 1972 St. Louis Cardinals
Steve Carlton had a history of contentious negotiations with Augustus Busch, the owner of the Cardinals, who had once told his GM, "I don’t care if he ever throws another damn ball for us." In 1972, in the middle of another protracted negotiation, he got his wish. Carlton was dealt to Philadelphia for Rick Wise. Lefty went 27-10 with a 1.97 ERA for the last-place Phils. Rob Neyer calculated in his Big Book of Baseball Blunders that the move cost the Cards three NL East crowns.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 10-1-09: Russell Branyan Done For Season; Jamie Moyer To Have Surgery; Jim Riggleman Candidate For MGR Position
Clayton Mortensen (Athletics):
Mortensen, a 24-year-old making his seventh big league appearance and sixth start, allowed six earned runs on eight hits before exiting with nobody out in the second inning. Ken Griffey Jr.'s three-run homer to center was the biggest blow, and Mortensen also hit a batter and made a throwing error.
Athletics Official Site
Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
In his final scheduled start of the season, Suppan was charged with eight runs on 10 hits in six innings. He threw three wild pitches in all, including one in the second inning that allowed Yorvit Torrealba to score a run that tied the game at 2, and another in the sixth that allowed Ian Stewart to scamper home with an insurance run. Two pitches later, Gonzalez connected for a two-run shot that gave Colorado an 8-4 lead.

Kevin Mulvey (Diamondbacks):

A King's Ransom
There’s been a lot of attention given to the potential of trading for Jake Peavy. The Padres appear eager to move him for the bounty they’ll receive in return and probably would want to get a deal done before the free agent period really gets going. They wouldn’t want Sabathia to sign, thus removing a potential suitor from the Peavy-sweepstakes. The Cards are one team mentioned as being a contender for Peavy’s services and the p-d’s Jeff Gordon says that the Cards should go all-in for Peavy.

Project Prospect: Top 25 Prospect Rankings
We're back! Though Matt Wieters, Andrew McCutchen, and Matt LaPorta have all performed admirably so far this season, the biggest winner to date has to be the Oakland A's. Not only are Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill, and Carlos Gonzalez performing well, but recent graduate Daric Barton is looking strong in the big leagues. And Brett Anderson is making a push to crack our Top 25 at some point this season, with Fautino de los Santos also in the picture.
