Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-24-09: Darren Oliver Having Great Season; Chris Narveson K's 10; Jim Riggleman Stays Positive; Edgar Gonzalez Having Tough Season

Darren Oliver (Angels):
He'll be 39 on Oct. 6, an age when most athletes are either in decline or retirement.

Darren Oliver is as good as he's been, taking on a strenuous workload for the Angels (57 appearances, 67 innings) in a tumultuous season and delivering quality work (5-1, 2.55 ERA, 82 total baserunners).

Terry Pendleton (Braves Hitting Coach):
When Braves manager Bobby Cox returns for his final season next year, he'll once again be working with each of the current members of his coaching staff.

Chris Narveson (Brewers):
Chris Narveson did what the more experienced and more expensive pitchers before him could not. He gave the Brewers a chance to win.

Kevin Mulvey (Diamondbacks):
Mulvey (0-2) allowed just two hits over six innings, but he wound up walking four and hitting a batter. Two of his four walks came around to score.

Max Scherzer (Diamondbacks):
Though there is still a slight chance he could make another start, Max Scherzer's season probably will come to an end after his outing against the Padres on Friday.

Jim Riggleman (Nationals MGR):
Although the Nationals are one defeat away from a 100-loss season, interim manager Jim Riggleman sees nothing but positives from the team in the future.

The decision whether to retain Jim Riggleman will be made right after the end of the season -- in two weeks. The Nats would just as soon keep Interim Jim. It's the path of least resistance, a favorite Nats tactic (patent pending). He's done a decent job, compared with Manny Acta (26-38 vs. 26-61).

Edgar Gonzalez (Padres):
One of the scant few endearing storylines from 2008 for the 99-loss Padres was the emergence of 30-year-old rookie Edgar Gonzalez, who made his Major League debut while stepping out from the shadow of his brother, Adrian Gonzalez.

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Marquis gave up six runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 innings of a 6-3 loss to the Padres that reduced the Rockies' lead in the National League Wild Card race to four games over the Braves and Giants.

Braden Looper (Brewers):
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin isn't ready to announce whether he intends to exercise his half of the mutual option on right-hander Braden Looper's contract.

But he appears to be leaning in that direction.

Brian Jordan (Braves Minor League Coach):
"The bottom line is, it's what Bobby wants to do, and I don't think anybody in the front office wanted to rush him out. They wanted him to make that decision. It's three years in a row not making it to the playoffs. I'm quite sure that put a little pressure on Bobby to make the right decision to him, to give it one more shot and hopefully go out on top."
