Outfielder Kyle Russell won the Southern League Player of the Week almost entirely off his early week performance. He had 10 hits from Monday to Wednesday, all of them for extra bases. The Texas product had a pair of homers and four RBIs on both Monday and Wednesday, and he had three RBIs on the day in between. A 1-for-12 finish to the week for the 2008 Dodgers third-round pick could do nothing to the glory of the first part of his week.

Kyle Russell Named MiLB, Topps Player Of The Month
Kyle Russell (23), of Magnolia, Texas, hit .350 with 10 home runs, five doubles, a triple and 22 runs for the Inland Empire 66ers. Russell's homers tied for most in the California League, and he paced the circuit with 33 RBIs and a .709 slugging percentage. The outfielder had eight games in which he drove in more than one run, including plating five on three occasions. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who took Russell in the third round in 2008 out of the University of Texas, recently promoted him to Double-A Chattanooga.

Kyle Russell earns California League Player of the Week honors for the third time coming into the third month of the season. Not surprisingly, he's among league leaders in hitting (fourth, .354), homers (first, 16), RBIs (tied for first, 53), on-base percentage (third, .448), slugging percentage (first, .692), extra-base hits (first, 31), runs scored (fifth, 42) and total bases (first, 137). This week was more of the same for the 23-year-old Dodgers prospect. He went 3-for-5 with two homers on a five-RBI week-opener in Lancaster, and he collected at least one RBI in each of the week's games. He tripled on Thursday, and did it again on Friday, adding a homer in that game. On Saturday, he homered again, and there's no telling what he might have done Sunday had he not had the day off.

Considering the Cardinals prospect homered in four straight games from Wednesday through Saturday -- even managing a roundtripper in a game in which he was walked three times -- his teammates and coaches would probably forgive Scruggs for just about anything. His Thursday longball was a grand slam, and Scruggs ended the week fourth in the Florida State League with 10 homers.

Kyle Russell earns his second Player of the Week nod, having clinched the honor for the week of April 19-25. Much as he did during that stretch, the Dodgers prospect spent this week consistently slapping out hard line drives. This time, many of them landed on the other side of Cal League fences. From Tuesday to Saturday, Russell homered in four consecutive games (he was out of the lineup Friday), driving in 14 runs in those contests. He collected five RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle on Wednesday and then repeated that performance Saturday. He cooled off with a 1-for-5, three-strikeout game Sunday, but his single did knock in a much-needed run for the 66ers, who ended up losing, 9-8, to Rancho Cucamonga. Russell's 15 RBIs led all of the Minor Leagues during the seven-day stretch.

Kyle Russell wasted little time extending his home run streak.
Russell remained one of the Minor Leagues' hottest hitters Saturday, slugging a grand slam and collecting five RBIs in a 10-run first inning, as the Inland Empire 66ers crushed the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, 16-5.

• Ryan Jackson, ss, Cardinals. Jackson was a glove-first shortstop coming out of Miami, where the Cardinals took him in the fifth-round last year. He hit .360 as a sophomore for the Hurricanes in 2008 but has struggled to put up numbers ever since. The 22-year-old went just 1-for-17 with seven strikeouts and one walk this week with low Class A Quad Cities, dropping his line for the season to .239/.372/.316 through 117 at-bats. Even though Jackson is best known for his defense, a college player should be able to put up better numbers against low Class A competition.

How Many Strikeouts Is Too Many?
At the major league level, strikeout rate correlates with a lot of good things, like isolated power. Strikeout numbers that used to look high are more tolerable than they used to be. But no matter how acceptable they become, there's a certain point beyond which a strikeout rate cannot go, at least if a player wants to keep his job.
