Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-15-09: Alexander Francisco Signs Deal; Mike Timlin Released; Jeff Suppan To Begin Rehab; Dan Haren Great Start
Mike Timlin (Free Agent):
Veteran reliever Mike Timlin ended his comeback attempt Friday when he was released by the Rockies after being told they had no opening for him at this time on the major-league roster.
Inside The Rockies
Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
Injured Brewers starter Jeff Suppan is scheduled to make a rehab start on Saturday for Class-A Appleton, and depending on the outcome could return as early as next weekend, Brewers manager Ken Macha said Friday.
Brew Beat
Daric Barton (Athletics):
Daric Barton (strained left hamstring) made his first rehab start in Arizona on Thursday. No timetable has been set for his return.
Athletics Official Site
Felipe Lopez (Brewers):
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo followed with a two-run double down the left-field line and Lopez followed with a three-run homer, as the Brewers batted around and ended the frame up, 8-0.
Brewers Official Site
Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
Haren helped his own cause by driving in one of the runs with a single to center. Miguel Montero and Augie Ojeda also drove in runs while another scored on a wild pitch.
That was all Haren would need as he allowed just one run over eight innings. It was quite a contrast to his previous four starts in which he had a combined ERA of 6.26, but the only difference was results and not stuff.
Diamondbacks Official Site
Jack Wilson (Mariners):
Jack Wilson remains day-to-day.
Mariners Official Site
Alexander Francisco (Bridgeport):
The Bridgeport Bluefish have inked pitcher Alex Francisco. The right-hander joins the team after appearing in 18 games for Minatitlan of the Mexican League. During that stint, he was 6-8 with a 3.89 ERA and 66 strikeouts.

Ex-Cardinal Watch 7-22-09: Emil Brown & Brandon Buckman Both Released; Brett Tomko DFA'd; David Eckstein Returning Soon; Jack Wilson Hurting
Emil Brown (Free Agent):
Was released from Triple-A Buffalo by the Mets.
Bart Hubbuch Twitter
The Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, today announced that INF/OF Josh Petersen has been promoted to the team from the Binghamton Mets (AA). The Mets also announced that OF Emil Brown has been released by the team.
Buffalo Bisons Official Site
Felipe Lopez (Brewers):
A little more on the thought process behind the Felipe Lopez deal...
The Diamondbacks saw Lopez as being on the cusp of ranking as a Type B free agent, but the more important question was whether they would have been willing to offer him arbitration. (You must offer arbitration -- and the player must decline and sign elsewhere -- in order to collect the supplemental pick.)
AZ Central
It didn't take long for Felipe Lopez to make history.
Brewers Official Site
Brett Tomko (Free Agent):
The Yankees designated him for an assignment.
Star Ledger Twitter
What Brett Tomko saw as a lack of opportunity, the Yankees saw as a cost of doing business.
Yankees Official Site
Braden Looper (Brewers):
Looper threw seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits. After surrendering eight runs combined in his last two starts, the right-hander had his first start without surrendering a run since April 22.
Brewers Official Site
David Eckstein (Padres):
It doesn't appear that Padres second baseman David Eckstein will need a few games in the Minor Leagues to test the right hamstring he strained earlier this month.
Padres Official Site
Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
Phils left-hander Jamie Moyer has enjoyed some of that success. Moyer, who starts Wednesday, is 3-0 with a 3.44 ERA in his previous three starts. He allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings against the Mets on July 4, six runs in five innings against the Reds on July 9 and no runs in seven innings against the Marlins on Thursday.
Phillies Official Site
Jack Wilson (Pirates):
After missing Tuesday's game because of tightness in his left hamstring, shortstop Jack Wilson may sit out Wednesday's series finale against the Brewers for precautionary measures.
Pirates Official Site
Sidney Ponson (Royals):
Royals starter Sidney Ponson, just off the disabled list, was tagged for six runs on eight hits in his five-plus innings. Included was Mike Napoli's leadoff home run in the sixth, a drive that carried 409 feet over the left-field wall.
Royals Official Site
Alexander Francisco (Minatitlan):
The Petroleros de Minatitlan of the Triple-A Mexican league placed him on the inactive list.
Brian Esposito (Astros):
Triple-A Round Rock sent him back down to Double-A Corpus Christi.
Brandon Buckman (Free Agent):
The Newark Bears of the Atlantic League released him. He played in 34 games going 31-for-122 (.254) with four doubles, three home runs, 11 RBIs, 13 runs, four walks, one stolen base, 21 strikeouts, .361 SLG, .283 OBP, and committed seven errors.
Terry Evans (Angels):
The Angels optioned pitcher Sean O'Sullivan back to triple-A after Tuesday night's game and recalled outfielder Terry Evans, who is batting .290 with 19 homers and 66 RBIs in 93 games. Though O'Sullivan improved to 3-0 with a win in the nightcap, the Angels, who have two off days in the next two weeks, won't need a fifth starter until Aug. 8. And with Juan Rivera slowed by a tight right hamstring, they needed some outfield coverage.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-11-09: Cesar Izturis Activated; Scott Rolen Hitting Streak Ends; Dan Haren Complete Game Shut Out; Alberto Castillo Returned
Delino DeShields (Reds MiLB Hitting Coach) & Bob Forsch (Reds MiLB Pitching Coach):
This is how it happens. You play 10, 12, 13 years in the big leagues, cash in a couple of big contracts at the end. "Retire" by the simple act of not answering your phone for an entire offseason, your career numbers a statement for all eternity as to who you were. You lay low, help raise those kids, get the oldest ready to fly the nest. Get divorced -- ouch -- and watch the economy go down the toilet -- double ouch. Start thinking that, well, if you were ever going to get back in the game, this might not be a bad time.
Washington Post
Cesar Izturis (Orioles):
The Orioles welcomed back their infield linchpin on Friday, when they activated shortstop Cesar Izturis from a five-week stint on the disabled list due to an appendectomy. Izturis will go right back to his normal starting duties, relegating Robert Andino to a reserve role and patching up the team's infield defense.
Orioles Official Site
Scott Rolen (Blue Jays):
Scott Rolen had his 25-game hit streak end in Friday's 2-0 win. It was a career high for Rolen, and the fourth-longest hitting streak in Blue Jays history. The longest streak was set by Shawn Green, who had a 28-game hitting streak in 1999.
Blue Jays Official Site
General manager Walt Jocketty would not comment on a Toronto Sun report that the Reds are interested in Blue Jays third baseman Scott Rolen.
Cincinnati Enquirer
Dan Haren & Felipe Lopez (Diamondbacks):
On Friday, Haren gave up four hits for his ninth victory of the season and second career shutout. The three-time All-Star struck out 10 Marlins hitters while lowering his ERA to a Major League-leading 2.01.

Jeff Weaver (Dodgers):
Long reliever or spot starter.
No matter the role, Jeff Weaver has filled in more than admirably anywhere the Dodgers have needed him this season.

Edgar Gonzalez (Padres):
By no means is Edgar Gonzalez a prolific home run hitter. No, that particular gene belongs to his younger brother, Adrian Gonzalez, who has averaged over 30 home runs in each of the past three seasons.

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Rockies All-Star Jason Marquis could be the perfect example of a pitcher evolving into stardom.
Rockies Official Site
Alexander Francisco & Ivan Bellazetin (Minatitlan):
Alexander Francisco launched solid 6 entries which allowed two hits and finished by three unstoppable bleaching combined with three relays, giving him a 3-0 victory oil MinatitlƔn on Pericos de Puebla, the first of the series. Francis did not give a punch and base 1. (Translated)
