Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-27-18
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue won their first five games to start this period but fell in the finale of the 2018 season. The club finished with a 51-21 record and clinched the South Division over the Twins by one game. They had a 27-9 record at home and 24-12 on the road.
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red took four of six games and ended the season on a three-game winning streak. The club ended with a 40-31 record and were tied for second in the San Pedro Division, ten and half games back of the Rangers Two. They had a 24-11 record defending homefield and 16-20 on the road.
Week In Review:
August 20, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 14-3: The Cardinals took an early lead in the first inning and pounded on the Yankees bullpen for the victory. Julio Puello struck out a career-high 12 while allowing five hits and two earned runs over the six inning start. Ramon Mendoza was a triple short for the cycle and drove in five runs.
August 20, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Rangers Two 5-3: The Cardinals took an early lead but let the Rangers come back and then shut the door in the bottom of the eighth. Jose Moreno struck out a career-high 11 while giving up six hits and two earned runs over the seven inning start. Francisco Hernandez singled, doubled, and knocked in two runs.
August 21, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 6-5 in ten innings: Closer game between the two clubs as this went into extras and the Cardinals pulled it off in the bottom of the tenth. Leonardo Taveras struck out four and held one inherited runner on base over the final one and a third scoreless innings. Malcom Nunez hit a two-run homer in the third inning.
August 21, 2018: Rangers Two beat Cardinals Red 11-1: The Cardinals tacked on the first run of the game in the first inning and went silent as the Rangers turned things up for a ten-run win. Cristhian Longa singled and drove in one run.
August 22, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 3-2: Both teams received strong pitching from their staffs but the Cardinals scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Saniel Santana struck out two over the final two scoreless innings for the save. Freddy DeJesus doubled and drove in one run.
August 22, 2018: Brewers beat Cardinals Red 9-0 in game one of doubleheader: The Cardinals offense continued their silence from the previous game and were shutout for the third time this season. Luis Montano had the only extra base hit with a double and also walked.
August 22, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Brewers 10-7 in game two of doubleheader: The Cardinals offense came back to life and plated five runs in the first and slapped another five on as the contest rolled on. Yowelfy Rosario singled, homered, and drove in three runs and Erik Pena added one single, one triple, and three RBIs.
August 23, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 15-3: The bats came alive, once again, for the Cardinals as they ;pounded the Rockies. Enmanuel Solano started and pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned), one walk, and struck out a career-high nine. Diowill Burgos singled, homered, and drove in four runs.
August 24, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Twins 2-1: The Twins looking to stay in the postseason hunt just couldn't hold on as the Cardinals clinched the division in a contest that went to the wire. Angel Ortega pitched four and a third innings of scoreless relief, giving up five hits, one walk, and striking out five. Malcom Nunez hit a solo home run in the third inning, that tied the game up.
August 24, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 5-4 in 11 innings: The Cardinals were slow to get out of the gate but tied the contest up to send to extras where they took the win. Nelson Prada pitched the final two and two thirds innings, allowing no hits or runs, striking out three and holding one inherited runner on base. Yowelfy Rosario singled, walked, and knocked in one run.
August 25, 2018: Twins beat Cardinals Blue 8-3: Both teams posted zeros for the first six frames and then the bullpens and errors assisted in the Cardinals crumbled in the end. Julio Puello pitched six scoreless innings and allowed four hits, one walk, and struck seven out in the start. Elvin DeJesus singled, doubled, and drove in one run.
August 25, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 4-3: The Cardinals end the season with a series sweep as they posted three runs in the eighth for the victory. Sebastian Tabata struck out three over the final two hitless/scoreless frames for the save. Luis Andujar singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.
Who's Hot:
Francisco Hernandez (Red) ended the season with a three-game on-base streak and reached base safely in nine of his last ten played. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-23 (.398) with one double, four RBIs (two w/two-outs), six runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. He played six games at third base and assisted in one double play.
Ramon Mendoza (Blue) drove in the second most RBIs during this period on both the red and blue teams. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-24 (.292) with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs (three w/two-outs), five runs, one walk, four strikeouts, one caught stealing, and grounded into one double play. He played three games at third base and two as designated hitter.
Darlin Moquete (Blue) completed the regular season with an 11-game hitting streak. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 12-for-28 (.429) with five doubles, five RBIs (three w/two-outs), seven runs, one walk, one sacrifice, three stolen bases, four strikeouts, one caught stealing, and grounded into one double play. He played five games in right field (one outfield assist) and split one between right and center. The April 21, 2018 free agent signing hit .344 after the All-Star break compared to .165 in the first half.
Malcom Nunez (Blue) finished the regular season on a seven-game hitting streak and won the 2018 DSL triple crown. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 10-for-25 (.400) with four home runs, nine RBIs (five w/two-outs), six runs, one intentional walk, one hit by pitch, one sac fly, one stolen base, and six strikeouts. He played three games at third base, two as designated hitter, and one at first base. The July 3, 2018 free agent signing led the blue team in AVG, home runs, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, and OPS.
Erik Pena (Red) finished the season on a four-game hitting streak. The 18-year old switch-hitter went 7-for-14 (.500) with one triple, four RBIs, three runs, one sacrifice, one sac fly, three stolen base, and two strikeouts. He played two games at second base (assisted in one double play and one throwing error), one in left field, one in right field, and one split between second base and right. The July 12, 2016 free agent signing hit .315 after joining the red team in early July.
Julio Puello (Blue) had three solid starts to round out the regular season. The 19-year old right-hander started on August 20th and allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk, threw one wild pitch, and struck a career-high 12 over six innings for the winning decision (7-0). He tossed six scoreless innings on August 25th where he gave up four hits, one walk, hit one batter, and struck seven out. He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-6. The April 29, 2018 free agent signing led all consistant openers, on the blue team, in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts, and innings pitched.
Sebastian Tabata (Red) only allowed one run in two of his last seven relief appearances. The 20-year old right-hander pitched two innings on August 20th and gave up no hits, one earned run, three walks, and tied a season-high with five strikeouts for the blown save (2) and winning decision (4-1). Then on August 25th he tossed two hitless/scoreless innings and struck three out for the save (2). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-0. The November 20, 2017 free agent signing led all red relievers in ERA, WHIP, and game finishes.
Leonardo Taveras (Blue) tossed up zeros in his final six relief appearances. The 19-year old right-hander pitched one and a third scoreless innings on August 21st and gave up one walk and struck one out for the winning decision (5-1). He then faced one batter for the out on August 24th. He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0 and held both inherited runners on base. The September 12, 2016 free agent signing led the blue team relievers in games pitched, game finishes, saves, and strikeouts.

Augusto Calderon (Red) gave up one or more runs in his last three relief appearances. The 17-year old right-hander pitched on August 22nd and gave up three hits, three runs (two earned), one walk, threw one wild pitch, and struck one out. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0.
Gabriel Contreras (Red) gave up one of more earned runs in his last four relief appearances. The 18-year old right-hander pitched on August 22nd and allowed two hits, three earned runs, two walks, and struck one out. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0.
Martin Cordova (Red) had his worst start of his pro career this past week. The 19-year old right-hander opened on August 21st and lasted just one and a third innings (ten batters) and allowed five hits, five earned runs, and hit one batter for the losing decision (7-2). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0. After starting the season out as one of the top pitchers on either club, the April 21, 2018 free agent signing crumbled in August as he pitched 13.1 innings and gave up 22 hits, 18 runs (15 earned), two walks, hit two batters, and struck four out.
Joyser Garcia (Red) did not connect for a hit in the final three games of his season. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-10 (.000) with three strikeouts and grounded into one double play. He played two games behind the plate (threw out one of two base runners) and one as designated hitter.
Claudio Ramirez (Red) struck out twice in each of his last three games and at least once in the final four regular season games. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-15 (.067) with one two-out RBI, two runs, one hit by pitch, and seven strikeouts. He played four games in left field.

St. Louis released Jhon Victorino after the 2018 season on August 25th. He was signed on June 18th after spending the 2017 season in the Toronto farm system. The 19-year old right-hander made 12 relief appearances, with the red team, posting a 1-0 record, 3.42 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, one hold, and one save. He allowed 25 hits, 12 runs (ten earned), eight walks, hit four batters, and struck 15 out over 26.1 innings.
