Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-16-18



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue took three of five games and end on a two-game winning streak.  The club is 24-12 and are one game behind the Twins in second place of the South Division.  The team is 12-6 at home and 12-6 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red also took three of five games and finished the schedule on a two-game winning streak.  The club is 20-16 and are one and a half games out of first place of the San Pedro Division.  The team is 11-7 at home and 9-9 on the road.

Weekly Review:

July 9: Phillies Red beat Cardinals Blue 4-3: The Cardinals tacked on two runs in the first and the Phillies bats came alive in the second and took over the game.  Yowelfy Rosario singled, walked, and drove in two runs.

July 9: Phillies White beat Cardinals Red 10-7:  Both teams put up strong pitching but the Phillies pulled it off in the end, putting a run up in the eighth.  Julio Puello started and pitched five innings allowing five hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck four out.  Malcom Nunez doubled, tripled, and drove in a career-high three runs.

July 10:  All games were postponed

July 11: Cardinals Blue beat Angels 8-6 in game one of doubleheader: Both teams exchanged zeros in the first two frames and the bats came alive on each side with the Cardinals just barely pulling it off.  Freddy Pacheco and Leonardo Taveras combined to finish of the game with two and a third scoreless innings.  The contest saw home runs by Diowill Burgos, Malcom Nunez, and Darlin Moquete.

July 11: Angels beat Cardinals Blue 3-2 in game two of doubleheader:  The Cardinals jumped out in front early but the Angels popped up in the later innings to avoid the doubleheader sweep.  Inohan Paniagua pitched four scoreless innings in the start.  Ramon Mendoza singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

July 11: Cardinals Red beat Mets Two 4-1 in game one of doubleheader: Cardinals sent out their All-Star starter and he dominated the contest.  Martin Cordova came an inning short of a complete game and only gave up six hits and one unearned run.  Adanson Cruz hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

July 11: Mets Two beat Cardinals Red 9-8 in game two of doubleheader:  The Cardinals struck early but not enough as the Mets went through the batting order in the second to plate nine runs.  Allinson Benitez pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief to stop the bleeding.  Adanson Cruz contributed two doubles and three RBIs.

July 12: Cardinals Blue beat Nationals 5-4:  The Nationals took an early lead and held until the Cardinals tacked on five runs in the third.  Angel Ortega, Ramon Fernandez, and Luis Tena combine to pitch the final five innings without giving up a run.  Diowill Burgos doubled and drove in two runs.

July 12: Cardinals Red beat Diamondbacks Two 7-6 in ten innings:  A couple lead changes pushed the contest into extras and the Cardinals held off the D-Backs in ten innings.  Franklin Soto singled, walked three times, and drove in one run.

July 13: Cardinals Blue beat Nationals 4-1: The Cardinals plated four runs in the first two frames and the pitching took over in the victory.  Hector Soto started and pitched five innings, allowing four hits, one unearned run, one walk, and striking out four.  Malcom Nunez singled, walked, and knocked in one run.

July 13: Cardinals Red beat Diamondbacks Two 7-4: Pitching was strong out of the gate, but the Cardinals took advantage of the D-Backs errors.  Miguel Maiz struck out seven of 13 batters faced in the start.  Luis Montano doubled and drove in two runs.

July 14: All-Star break

July 15: 2018 All-Star Game - American League beat National League 5-4Joerlin De Los Santos started in left field, batted eighth, and flew out to center in his only at-bat.  Martin Cordova faced two batters int he first inning and gave up two hits.  Sander Mora entered in the seventh as a pinch hitter and took over at second base.  Mora grounded out to the pitcher for the last out of the seventh inning and grounded out to the shortstop for the final out of the game.  Cardinals Blue manager Fray Peniche was a coach.


Who's Hot:

Martin Cardova (Red) has won all four starts he has made this season.  The 19-year old right-hander opened on July 11th and struck out two while allowing six hits, one unearned run, and one walk for the winning decision (4-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 9-to-3.  The April 21, 2018 free agent signing has logged 23.1 innings and allowed 22 hits, two runs (one earned), four walks, and struck out 17 this season.

Adanson Cruz (Red) will look to extended his 17-game on-base streak, which includes at least one walk in his last three contests, into the next week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-18 (.444) with four doubles, one home run, six two-out RBIs, three runs, four walks, two stolen bases, three strikeouts, and was picked off.  He played three games in center field and one in right.  Since July 3rd, the July 2, 2017 free agent signing has gone 15-for-36 (.417) with five doubles, one home run, and 12 RBIs.

Ramon Mendoza (Blue) has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-13 (.452) with two doubles, four RBIs, one run, one hit by pitch, and one strikeout.  He played two games at second base (assisted in one double play) and two at third (assisted in one double play.

Malcom Nunez (Blue) has an on-base streak of seven games and has not struck out once in his last five contests.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 5-for-14 (.357) with one double, one triple, one home run, six RBIs (three w/two-outs), four runs, five walks, and one hit by pitch.  He played three games at third base (assisted in one double play) and two as designated hitter.

Carlos Soler (Blue) has reached base safely in 11 straight games.  The 18-year old left-hander hitter went 7-for-20 (.350) with one double, two triples, two RBIs, seven runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, one stolen base, four strikeouts, and one caught stealing/pickoff.  He played five games in center field where he committed two fielding errors.  Since his return on July 2nd, the July 2, 2017 free agent signing has gone 17-for-45 (.377) with three doubles, two triples, four RBIs, and scored 11 runs.

Franklin Soto (Red) has collected a hit in his last six games and walk in past three.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-17 (.353) with one double, one triple, four RBIs, four runs, six walks, four stolen bases, two strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played four games at shortstop (assisted in two double plays, two throwing errors, and two fielding errors) and one as designated hitter.

Leonadro Taveras (Blue) has earned a save in four of his last six relief appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander pitched on July 11th and tossed one scoreless inning allowing one walk and striking out one for the save (3).  On July 13th, he pitched another scoreless appearance with one walk and two strikeouts for the save (4).  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-2.

Who's Not:

Freddy DeJesus (Blue) has not picked up a hit in four straight games.  The 18-year old right-hander went 0-for-13 (.000) with three walks, four strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays.  He played four games at first base and assisted in three double plays.  The September 6, 2016 free agent signing does lead the team in walks.

Joyser Garcia (Red) managed to end his hitting streak at four games by not collecting a hit in his last two contests.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-8 (.000) with one walk and three strikeouts.  He played two games behind the plate (assisted in one double play and picked one base runner off) and one as designated hitter.

Ludwin Jimenez (Red) has given up seven hits and five runs in each of his last two starts.  The 16-year old right-hander opened on July 9th and allowed seven hits, five runs (three earned), one home run, committed one pickoff error, and struck three out for the losing decision (1-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-1.

Sander Mora (Blue) has not connected for a hit in seven consecutive games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-15 (.000) with three runs, three walks, one stolen base, and four strikeouts.  He played four games at shortstop and assisted in one double play.  Over the hitless streak he has recorded 27 at-bats.

Luis Oriz (Red) was chased quickly out of shortest start of the season.  The 17-year old right-hander opened on July 11th and coughed up five hits, eight runs (four earned), and hit one batter for the losing decision (1-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-2.  The April 23, 2018 free agent signing currently has give up 19 hits, 18 runs (ten earned), four walks, hit three batters, and struck out ten over 13 innings as a starter.

Josue Ramirez (Blue) did not record an out in his latest relief appearance.  The 18-year old right-handed faced four batters on July 9th and allowed one hit, two earned runs, two walks, hit two batters, and threw two wild pitches for the blown save (1).  The October 24, 2017 free agent signing has not made it through a complete inning in his last two games but has given up two or more runs.

Alexander Samuel (Red) has reached base safely in seven straight games but has connected for a hit in three of the last.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-9 (.000) with one run, three walks, and four strikeouts.  He played one game as designated hitter, one in right field, and one in left.

Ronald Suarez (Red) has been out of action since June 29th, Darlyn Del Villar (Blue) and Hector De Los Santos (Red) since June 30th, Miguel Yedis (Blue) since July 2nd, Elvin DeJesus (Blue) and Sebastian Tabata (Red) since July 4th, and Leudy Pena (Blue), Jose Zapata (Blue), and Jesus Orecchia (Red) only played in two games.

St. Louis Cardinals signed Ramon Fernandez on July 10th and assigned to the blue team.  The 19-year old right-hander made his pro debut on July 12th and pitched two innings and allowed no hits or runs, three walks, and struck two out.

The Cardinals Blue are hitting .252 (302-for-1198, 4th) with 76 doubles (1st), 32 triples (3rd), 18 home runs (4th), 202 RBIs (2nd), 496 total bases (2nd), 245 runs (t-3rd), 202 walks (t-4th), 39 stolen bases (t-8th worst), 313 strikeouts (t-10th worst), 20 caught stealing (9th best), .369 OBP (6th), .414 SLG (2nd), and .783 OPS (2nd).
