Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-9-18

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue split the schedule this past week and ended on a two-game winning streak.  The club is 21-10 and are tied for first place, with the Twins, in the South Division.  They are 10-6 at home and 11-4 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red took four of the last six games with the final on the winning side.  The club is 17-14 and are two and a half games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 10-5 defending home and 7-9 as the visitor.

Week In Review:

Yankees beat Cardinals Blue 6-0:  The Yankees kept the Cardinals nearly hitless during the contest only giving up three and singles and shut them out.  Hector Soto started and allowed three hits, one run, and struck out four for the Redbirds.  Luis Tena pitched the final inning going scoreless and struck one out.

Rangers Two beat Cardinals Red 13-4:  The Rangers tore into the Cardinals pitching to open and added the nails in the coffin in the mid-to-late innings.  Errors didn't help the Redbirds, but each of their hurlers coughed up two or more runs in the contest.  Francisco Hernandez singled and drove in one run.

Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 10-4:  The bats woke up for the Cardinals and they received another strong start from their opener.  Julio Puello gave up six hits, two earned runs, and struck four out over the six inning start.  Diowill Burgos singled and hit a two-run homer, Pablo Gomez collects two singles and two RBIs, and Yowelfy Rosario added a single and two RBIs.

Cardinals Red beat Brewers 13-8:  The Brewers took to the Cardinals early, slapping seven runs on the board in the first five frames.  The Redbirds made a huge comeback in the seventh and eighth to win the game.  Jhon Victorino stopped the bleeding by tossing three innings and allowing only one hit and one run for the winning decision.  Sander Mora and Adanson Cruz each had two singles and three RBIs.

Rockies beat Cardinals Blue 6-3:  The Cardinals cruised through the game until the later innings when the bullpen gave up the win and the bats went silent.  Francis Ventura pitched six shutout innings giving up eight hits and striking out five.  Freddy DeJesus signled and hit a solo home run in the third.

Cardinals Red beat Brewers 11-7:  The second game between the two clubs was almost a flip but with different results.  The Cardinals jumped out early and the Brewers made a comeback, that came up short.  Martin Cordova struck out five over the six inning scoreless start.  Alexander Samuel walked, tripled, and knocked in three runs.

Twins beat Cardinals Blue 4-1:  Both team exchanged runs in the first and the game quieted as the pitching took over, but the Twins took over the sixth and seventh innings.  Inohan Paniagua's start was going real well until he reached the sixth and was knocked out on two runs.  Jean Selmo singled, doubled, and drove in the only run for the Cardinals.

Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 6-4:  Cardinals took advantage of the Cubs errors for an early lead and the bats kept things going with a strong late-innings reliever.  Allinson Benitez hurled three scoreless innings to open and Wilman Madera pitched the final four innings and allowed one run while striking out six.

Cardinals Blue beat Twins 12-11:  The Cardinals heated up at the plate scoring eight runs in the first two frames, but the Twins came roaring back and almost forced extras.  Anthony Trompiz was the only Redbirds' pitcher that went untouched with one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief.  Leudy Pena singled, tripled, and drove in four runs.  Jean Selmo was a triple shy for the cycle and drove in three runs.

Cubs Two beat Cardinals Red 8-7:  The contest started out slow at the plate and turned up midway as the Cubs pulled out the victory in the final inning.  Yowelfy Rosario tripled, homered, and drove in two runs and Cristhian Longa was a home run short of the cycle and knocked in two runs also.

Cardinals Blue beat Phillies Red 16-1:  The Bats continued to pop for the Cardinals and the pitching was stellar.  Hector Soto struck out five over five scoreless innings in the start.  Pablo Gomez was a home run short for the cycle and drove in three runs and Jose Zapata added two singled and three RBIs.

Cardinals Red beat Phillies White 9-4:  The Cardinals had a bullpen game this time around and the offense took advantage of a couple errors by the Phillies for the win.  Dionys Rodriguez tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the win.  Francisco Hernandez singled, homered, and drove in two runs.
