Diomedes Del Rio - Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue


The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue extended their winning streak to five games to start the week off then dropped three of the last five.  They are 13-6 and are currently tied for first in the South Division.  The team is 6-3 defending home and 7-3 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red extended their losing streak to six to open this period but claimed the fine five contests.  They are 9-10 and four games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  The team is 6-4 at home and 3-6 on the visitors side.

Week In Review:

Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 4-1:  The Cardinals scored three runs in the first four frames and held on to win.  Inohan Paniagua started and pitched five scoreless innings.  Freddy DeJesus and Yowelfy Rosario each doubled and drove in one run.

Brewers beat Cardinals Red 18-7:  The Brewers dropped the Cardinals hard and took advantage of their errors at the same time.  Cristhian Longa singled and drove in three runs.  Adanson Cruz singled twice, tripled, and knocked in one run.

Twins beat Cardinals Blue 13-4:  The Cardinals took an early lead but the Twins came roaring back and pounded the pitching staff mid-game.  Diomedes Del Rio doubled and walked twice, and drove in one run.

Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 8-6:  The Cardinals tacked on four runs in the first five frames and held off the Cubs comeback for the win.  Jose Moreno allowed two hits, no runs, five walks, and struck five out over six inning start.  Joyser Garcia singled, doubled, and drove in one run.

Twins beat Cardinals Blue 13-4:  New game, same results between the Cardinals and Twins.  Diomedes Del Rio singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 8-6 in 11 innings:  Same score as the previous contest, but this one pushed into extras.  Roy Garcia lead the way from the bullpen with three scoreless innings and four strike outs mid-game.  Joerlin De Los Santos singled and knocked in two runs.

Cardinals Blue beat Phillies Red 8-6:  Cardinals took an early lead, but Phillies weren't far behind as both teams exchanged punches throughout the game.  Freddy Pacheco struck out three over the final two scoreless frames for the save.  Diomedes Del Rio collects two doubles, one triple, one home run, and five RBIs.

Cardinals Red beat Phillies White 13-8:  The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third and came back around int he fourth and slapped down another 11 runs.  Miguel Maiz and Dionys Rodriguez each tossed two and a third scoreless innings in relief while holding a combined five inherited runners on base.  Alexander Samuel walked and hit a grand slam in the fourth inning.  Franklin Soto collected two singles, one walk, one triple, and three RBIs.

Phillies Red beat Cardinals Blue 4-3 in 11 innings:  The Cardinals jumped out in front early but the Phillies came back to send the contest into extras.  The Redbirds handed the game to the Phillies in the 11th courtesy of an error.  Francis Ventura struck out three and allowed four hits and one earned run over the six inning start.  Darlyn Del Villar singled three times and knocked in two runs.

Cardinals Red beat Phillies White 4-0:  Scores says it all, as the Cardinals pick up their first shutout of the season.  Martin Cordova and Wilman Madera combined for six strike out over nine innings.  Luis Andujar singled and drove in two runs.

Cardinals Blue beat Angels 3-2 in six innings:  The Cardinals scored three in the third and just barely hung out, thanks to the weather.  Inohan Paniagua struck out three over two and two thirds, in his second start of this period.  Pablo Gomez hit a three-run homer.

Cardinals Red beat Mets Two 4-1 in five innings:  The Mets might of got on the board first, but the Cardinals didn't stand by too long before taking over.  Ronald Suarez struck out six and allowed three hits and one solo home run over four innings.  Cristhian Longa hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Who's Hot:

Diomedes Del Rio (Blue) currently has a 13-game on base streak.  The 20-year old left-handed hitter went 9-for-21 (.429) with three doubles, five triples, one home run, eight RBIs (four w/two-outs), five runs, five walks, one sac fly, one stolen base, and four strikeouts.  He played five games in center field (one outfield assist and one fielding error) and one as designated hitter.  The July 2, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored, triples, total bases, OBP, SLG, AVG, and OPS.

Cristhian Longa (Red) has a seven-game on base streak which he also has connected for a hit, scored a run, and drove in a run in four consecutive contests.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-17 (.359) with one double, two home runs, seven RBIs (two w/two-outs), six runs,. four walks, one hit by pitch, one sac fly, one sacrifice, and two strikeouts.  He played three games at first base (assisted in three double plays and one fielding error), one as designated hitter, one at catcher, and one split between first base and catcher (allowed two stolen bases).  The February 3, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in home runs and RBIs.

Jose Moreno (Red) threw his first scoreless session of the season.  The 17-year old right-hander started on June 19th and allowed two hits, no runs, five walks, hit one batter, and struck five out for the winning decision (1-1).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-3.  The February 3, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitch.

Freddy Pacheco (Blue) has converted three of three save opportunities this season.  The 20-year old right-hander was called from the bullpen on June 18th and tossed one and two-thirds hitless/scoreless innings while striking out three and throwing one wild pitch.  He then pitched two scoreless on June 21st and gave up two hits and struck three out.  The November 29, 2017 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-1 and let two of four inherited runners score.  He leads all relievers in ERA, saves, strikeouts, and WHIP.

Inohan Paniagua (Blue) was able to make it out of the second inning in his two latest starts.  The 18-year old right-handed made his best start of the season, so far, on June 18th.  He went five innings and gave up four hits, no runs, two walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck four out for the winning decision (1-1).  He then opened on June 23rd and allowed no hits or runs, two walks, and struck three out over two and two-thirds innings.  The December 22, 2017 free agent signing had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-5.

Franklin Soto (Red) has an eight-game on base streak where he has connected for at least one hit in his past six consecutive games.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-22 (.409) with one triple, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), seven runs, six walks, three stolen bases, four strikeouts, and one caught stealing (one was pickoff).  He played three games at shortstop (assisted in two double play and committed two throwing errors), two as designated hitter, and one at second base.  The July 2, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in hits, triples, and total bases.

Francis Ventura (Blue) finally stopped the bleeding after three poor starts to open the season.  The 18-year old right-hander opened on June 22nd and allowed four hits, one earned run, two walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck three out over six innings (season-high).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 11-to-3.  The August 3, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitched, hits allowed, runs allowed, and earned runs.

Who's Not:

Rodard Avelino (Red) could not record an out in his two relief appearances this past week.  The 19-year old right-hander faced four batters on June 19th and allowed no hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks (one intentional).  He then pitched to four batters on June 21st and gave up no hits, three earned runs, and four walks.

Gabriel Contreras (Red) still continues to struggle with his control, now walking a total of ten over four innings this season.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched one inning on June 18th and gave up two hits, three earned runs, two walks, hit one batter, and threw one wild pitch.  On June 21st, he allowed no hits, two earned runs, four walks, and threw three wild pitches while facing five batters.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-1 and let two of three inherited runners score.

Derek Diaz (Blue) has given up three or more runs in his last two appearances.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched in relief on June 19th and allowed no hits, four earned runs, two walks, hit two batters, and struck two out over one inning.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0 and let two of three inherited runners score.

Jesus Orecchia (Red) has not connected for a hit in four consecutive games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-8 (.000) with two strikeouts.  He played four games behind the plate where he had two passed balls, one pickoff error, and allowed three stolen bases.

Claudio Ramirez (Red) finally ended his hitless streak at four games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-15 (.067) with one double, one RBI, two runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, and six strikeouts.  He played two games at first base (assisted in one double play), one as designated hitter, one in left field, and one split between first and left (one fielding error and one double play).

Hector Soto (Blue) had his worst start of the season and saw his ERA almost double.  The 19-year old right-hander opened on June 20th and coughed up ten hits, seven runs (six earned), one home run, one walk, hit two batters, threw one wild pitch, and struck two out over five innings for the losing decision (2-1).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-5.

Jose Zapata (Blue) has not connected for a hit in five consecutive games but has walked in four straight.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-8 (.000) with two RBIs, one run, three walks, and four strikeouts.  He played three games behind the plate where he had one passed ball and threw out one of three base runners.

Notes:

Augusto Calderon (Red) has been out of action since June 6th, Luis Tena (Blue) since June 9th, Allinson Benitez (Red) since June 11th, and Darlin Moquete (Blue) since June 15th.  Carlos Soler (Blue) only played in one game this period.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed minor league free agents Angel Ortega (Blue) and Jhon Victorino (Red) on June 19th.  Victorino, formerly with the Blue Jays, made his debut on June 20th and pitched two scoreless innings.  Ortega, formerly with the Astros, made his debut on June 20th and struck out three and gave up one run over two innings.

Ramon Mendoza (Blue) was activated from the restricted list on June 20th.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter debuted on June 21st and played a total of four games this past week.  He went 2-for-8 (.250) with four runs, four walks, and one strikeout.

Martin Cordova was shifted from Red team to Blue on June 20th.  The 18-year old right-hander made his debut on June 22nd and pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out four for the winning decision.

The St. Louis Cardinals are rumored to have a $300K agreement in place with Cuban third baseman Malcom Nunez: El Nuevo Herald

Cardinals Blue is hitting .263 (171-for-650, t-5th) with 45 doubles (1st), 23 triples (1st), 12 home runs (t-3rd), 130 RBIs (1st), 298 total bases (1st), 157 runs (1st), 123 walks (2nd), 25 stolen bases, 165 strikeouts, nine caught stealing (t-5th best), .386 OBP (t-2nd), .458 SLG (1st), and .845 OPS (1st).
