Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-2-18

Hector Soto - Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue


The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue extended their winning streak, from the previous week, to five games and split the last two for this period.  The club is 18-7 and are one game ahead of the Twins for first place in the South Division.  They are 8-4 defending home and 10-3 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red took four of six games in the last week, with three coming midway.  The club is 13-12 and have climbed up to only four games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 8-5 at home and 5-7 on the road.

Week In Review:

Cardinals Blue beat Angels 3-2:  Angels scored in the first inning but only had the lead for a short period before the Cardinals took over and held on for the victory.  Angel Cuenca struck out six and allowed four hits and one run in the start.  Diowill Burgos singled and drove in one run.

Cardinals Red beat Mets Two 3-1 in 10 innings:  Both team's started went five and six innings and the bullpen arms were strong but the Cardinals pulled it off in extras, with the help of errors.  Jose Moreno struck out seven and gave up one hit and three walks over six scoreless innings.  Adanson Cruz collected two singles and two RBIs.

Cardinals Blue beat Nationals 4-2:  The Cardinals scored in the first and held off the Nationals late-game rally.  Hector Soto started and went a career-high seven innings giving up two hits, one earned run, and striking out four.  Diomedes Del Rio tripled and knocked in two runs.

Diamondbacks Two beat Cardinals Red 6-1:  The Cardinals scored the first, and their only run, of the game in the second and the Diamondbacks had two innings of three-run play.  Dionys Rodriguez tossed two scoreless innings of relief and struck one out.  Cristhian Longa hit a solo home run.

Cardinals Blue beat Nationals 5-2:  The Cardinals jumped out in front early with three runs in the first two frames and held on for the two-game sweep.  Julio Puello struck out six and allowed four hits and two runs in the seven and two-thirds innings start.  Diowill Burgos tripled, walked, and drove in one run and Jean Selmo added a triple, walk, and one RBI.

Cardinals Red beat Diamondbacks Two 8-4:  The Cardinals took advantage of mistakes by the D-Backs and doubled up the score.  Ludwin Jimenez pitched six innings and allowed four hits, two runs, and struck out five.  Elvin DeJesus singled twice, walked, and drove in two runs.

Cardinals Blue beat Mets One 2-1:  The pitching was the key to this game, both teams strong but the Cardinals pulled it off.  Francis Ventura struck out four and allowed three runs and one earned run over six innings.  Angel Ortega finished off the contest with two scoreless innings for the save.  Jean Selmo singled, doubled, and drove in one run.

Cardinals Red beat Tigers One 13-1:  The Cardinals turned up the offense and pounded on the Tigers pitching staff.  Martin Cordova struck out six and allowed six hits and one earned run over the six inning start.  Joerlin De Los Santos collected five singles, one double, and two RBIs.

Mets One beat Cardinals Blue 3-0:  The Mets pitching dominated the contest, holding the Cardinals to three hits and six walks.  Josue Ramirez tossed three scoreless innings of relief mid-game.  Darlyn Del Villar reached base twice on a single and double.

Cardinals Red beat Tigers One 12-3:  The Cardinals offense kept rolling in the second game against the Tigers for the two-game beat down.  Ronald Suarez struck out three over the three inning start.  Sebastian Tabata tossed two scoreless innings to complete the game.  Luis Montano collected two doubles and three RBIs.  Joyser Garcia singled, doubled, and drove in three runs.

Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 10-4:  The Cardinals finished off the month of June beating on the Yankees with 11 hits and ten runs.  Anthony Trompiz, Freddy Pacheco, and Leonardo Taveras each pitched two scoreless innings of relief a piece.  Ramon Mendoza came a home run short of a cycle and drove in three runs.  Diomedes Del Rio contributed two singles and two RBIs.

Rangers Two beat Cardinals Red 14-5:  The tables were turned on the the Cardinals in the final game of the week.  After beating the Tigers by a total of 15-4, the Rangers returned the favor with the help of errors.  Gabriel Contreras calmed and pitched one scoreless inning while striking out two.  Sander Mora singled twice, walked, and drove in two runs.

Who's Hot:

Martin Cordova (Red) made his second stellar start of his professional career.  The 19-year old right-hander started on June 28th and allowed six hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck out a career-high six for the winning decision (2-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-1.

Joerlin De Los Santos (Red) has an 18-game on base streak which includes connecting for a hit in three consecutive contests and scoring a run in the last four.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-24 (.458) with three doubles, four RBIs, eight runs, six walks, two hit by pitches, four stolen bases, one strikeout, and one caught stealing.  He played three games in center field, two in left, and one in right.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored, hits, total bases, stolen bases, and SLG.

Ramon Mendoza (Blue) has reached base safely in all seven games he's played and currently has a four-game hit streak.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-16 (.375) with one double, one triple, four RBIs (one w/two-outs), three runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.  He played two games at third base, one at second, and split one game at both positions.

Sander Mora (Red) had a five-game hitting streak that came to an end in the second to last game of this period.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-20 (.350) with three RBIs, four runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, one sacrifice, four stolen bases, four strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played four games at shortstop (assisted in one double play, one unassisted double play, and one fielding error), one at second base (assisted in two double plays), and one split between third base and designated hitter.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in OBP, AVG, and OPS.

Freddy Pacheco (Blue) has extended his scoreless streak to four games.  The 20-year old right-hander finished off the June 25th game for the save (4) with two hitless/scoreless innings and struck four out.  On June 30th, he hurled another two innings and allowed one hit, no runs, and struck four out for the winning decision (1-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0.  The November 29, 2017 free agent signing leads all relievers in ERA, WHIP, saves, and strikeouts.

Hector Soto (Blue) bounced back from his worst start of his career for his best, up to this point.  The 19-year old right-hander started on June 26th and allowed two hits, one earned run, one home run, one walk, hit one batter, and struck out four for the winning decision (3-1).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 14-to-3.  The November 8, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in wins.

Francis Ventura (Blue) kept things rolling with his second consecutive quality start.  The 18-year old right-hander started on June 28th and gave up three hits, one earned run, three walks, and struck out four over six innings for the winning decision (1-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 9-to-3.

Who's Not:

Hector De Los Santos (Red) has given up one or more runs in each of his last four relief appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander was called from the pen on June 25th and gave up two hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck two out over two and a third innings.  One June 30th, he went three innings and allowed four hits, one earned run, threw one wild pitch, and struck out four.  The April 23, 2018 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-1 and let his only inherited runner score.

Cristhian Longa (Red) will look to end his hitless streak at two games in the next period.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-19 (.105) with one home run, one RBI, two runs, one walk, two hit by pitches, and eight strikeouts.  He played four games at first base (assisted in six double plays and one missed catch error) and one behind the plate.

Darlin Moquete (Blue) returned after an 11-day absence and did end his hitless streak at seven games.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-12 (.083) with one double, one RBI, two runs, three walks, one hit by pitch, one stolen base, and seven strikeouts.  He played two games in right field and two in center.

Inohan Paniagua (Blue) returned to his old ways on the mound.  The 18-year old right-hander started on June 29th and gave up five hits, three earned runs, one home run, hit two batters, and struck two out over four innings for the losing decision (1-2).  He had a ground out to-fly out ratio of 4-to-1.

Erik Pena (Blue) made his 2018 debut this past week and struggled to connect for a hit.  The 18-year old switch-hitter went 1-for-9 (.111) with two RBIs, four runs, three walks, three hit by pitches, one sac fly, and two strikeouts.  He played three games at four games at second base and one as designated hitter.

Luis Rodriguez (Blue) continues to struggle at the plate but showed he can throw out the runners from the backstop.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-10 (.100) with one walk and four strikeouts.  He played three games at catcher and threw out four of six base runners and picked one runner off.

Jhon Victorino had one of his worst relief appearances of his pro career this past week.  The 19-year old right-hander pitched on June 26th and coughed up four hits, three earned runs, one walk, and struck one out over one inning.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1.

Notes:

Augusto Calderon (Red) has been out of action since June 6th, Allinson Benitez (Red) since June 11th, Carlos Soler (Blue) since June 18th, Derek Diaz (Blue) since June 19th, and Alexander Samuel (Red) since June 21st.

Diomedes Del Rio (Blue) was promoted to short-season rookie-level Gulf Coast League on July 2nd.  He played a total of 92 games going 63-for-260 (.242) with nine doubles, 13 triples, two home runs, 38 RBIs, 104 total bases, 54 runs, 46 walks, 13 stolen bases, 63 strikeouts, four caught stealing, .367 OBP, .400 SLG, and .767 OPS in two and a half season in the Dominican Summer League.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed Cuban third baseman Malcom Nunez, Venezuelan catcher Diego Velasquez, and Venezuelan RHP Jesus Rojas.  The organization also has an agreement in place with Mexican first baseman/catcher Fernando Diaz.

Cardinals Blue is hitting .247 (207-for-839) with 55 doubles (1st), 27 triples (t-2nd), 12 home runs (t-6th), 150 RBIs (1st), 352 total bases (2nd), 181 runs (1st), 155 walks (t-2nd), 29 stolen bases, 226 strikeouts, 11 caught stealing, .372 OBP (t-4th), .420 SLG (3rd), and .791 OPS (t-2nd).

Cardinals Red is hitting 258 (213-for-826, 8th) with 46 doubles (3rd), 12 triples, eight home runs, 126 RBIs (t-6th), 307 total bases (10th), 164 runs (5th), 136 walks (t-5th), 41 stolen bases, 220 strikeouts, 20 caught stealing, .372 OBP (t-4th), .372 SLG, and .744 OPS (10th).
