Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-23-18



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue took all five playable games this past week and extended their winning streak to seven games  The club is 29-12 and tied for first with the Twins in the South Division.  They are 15-6 defending home and 14-6 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red claimed three of four of six games played and finished with a two-game winning streak.  The club is 24-18 and are two games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 14-7 at home and 10-11 on the road.

Week In Review:

July 16: Cardinals Blue @ Mets One was suspended due to rain.

July 16: Cardinals Red beat Tigers One 2-0 in five innings:  The Cardinals only needed a handful of hits and a couple runs as they no-hit the Tigers in the rain-shorted contest.  Ludwin Jimenez made the five inning start and the only runners allowed on base for the Tigers were two hit by pitches.  Franklin Soto doubled and drove in one run.

July 17: Cardinals Blue beat Mets One 4-2:  The Cardinals jumped on the scoreboard in the first and doubled up the Mets.  Francis Ventura started and pitched six innings allowing six hits, one earned run, three walks, and struck five out for the winning decision.  Freddy DeJesus singled and drove in two runs.

July 17: Tigers One beat Cardinals Red 10-3:  The Tigers tacked on five runs in the first inning and added five more through the contest and holding the Cardinals do just four hits.  Rodard Avelino tossed two scoreless innings of relief.  Luis Montano hit two home runs and drove in all three Cardinals runs.

July 18: Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 17-4:  The Cardinals pounded the Yankees early taking a 13-4 lead in the first three frames and added on, taking advantage of the seven errors committed.  Josue Ramirez, Larimel Soriano, Ramon Fernandez, and Anthony Trompiz combined to pitch the final four innings without giving up a run.  Carlos Soler collects three singles, one double, one walk, and four RBIs.

July 18: Cardinals Red beat Rangers Two 12-2:  The contest started out slow and once the bullpens took over, the Cardinals turned things up scoring ten over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.  Martin Cordova started and pitched five innings allowing five hits, one unearned run, one walk, and struck four out for the winning decision.  Erik Pena singled, tripled, and drove in three runs.

July 19: Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 8-2 in seven innings:  The Cardinals continued swinging the bat and swept the Yankees in the seven-inning rain-shortened game.  Angel Cuenca pitched the final two frames, striking out two and only allowing two hits.  Freddy DeJesus singled, doubled twice, and drove in two runs.

July 19: Rangers Two beat Cardinals Red 8-0 in six innings:  It was all Rangers in this contest as they shutout the Cardinals in the six-inning rain-shorted game.  Each of the the Cardinals three pitchers coughed up two or more runs and no extra-base hits were recorded.

July 20: Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 9-7 in 11 innings: The Cardinals bats kept swinging away in the next contest but the bullpen struggled, almost giving up the game to the Rockies in extras.  Hector Soto tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and allowed eight hits and two earned runs.  Malcom Nunez hit a two-run homer.

July 20: Cardinals Red beat Brewers 5-1:  The Cardinals received strong pitching from the hurlers and the bats claimed the contest by the third inning.  Jose Moreno struck out two and allowed four hits and one earned run over seven innings.  Cristhian Longa singled, homered, and knocked in two runs.

July 21: Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 15-7:  The Cardinals extended their winning streak to seven games as the bats cranked out 18 hits.  Julio Puello struck out six over six scoreless innings in the winning start.  Ramon Mendoza singled, doubled twice, and drove in four runs.

July 21: Cardinals Red beat Brewers 8-7 in ten innings:  The Brewers did their best to avoid the two-game sweep but came up short in extras.  Ludwin Jimenez with his second strong start of the period, going five innings and allowing three hits, one earned run, and struck four out.  Claudio Ramirez collects two singles, one double, one walk, and two RBIs.

Who's Hot:

Martin Cordova (Red) extended his winning streak to five games.  The 19-year old right-hander started on July 18th and allowed five hits, one unearned run, one walk, and struck four out for the winning decision (5-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-5.

Adanson Cruz (Red) has a 23-game on-base streak to work with in the next week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-19 (.421) with one double, one triple, four two-out RBIs, five runs, five walks, one strikeout, grounded into one double play, and was picked off.  He played four games in center field (one outfield assist) and two in right (one throwing error).  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in walks.

Freddy DeJesus (Blue) will look to build on a six-game on-base streak that includes hitting successfully in four consecutive games and driving in a run in four straight contests.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-19 (.421) with five doubles, nine RBIs (five w/two-outs), two runs, and four strikeouts.  He played three games at first base (assisted in two double plays and one fielding error) and one as designated hitter.  The September 6, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in doubles, RBIs, and walks.

Ludwin Jimenez (Red) bounced back from a couple troubling starts to toss a complete game no-hitter and one-run game.  The 16-year old right-hander started on July 16th and went five innings without giving up a hit or run, hit two batters, and picked one off for the win (2-2).  On July 21st, he struck out four and allowed three hits, one earned run, and threw one wild pitch over five innings.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 9-for-6.

Ramon Mendoza (Blue) has a 19-game on-base streak to extend on the next week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-17 (.471) with three doubles, one triple, eight RBIs (two w/two-outs), five runs, two walks, one hit by pitch, and two strikeouts.  He played three games at second base (assisted in one double play and one fielding error) and one at third.  The April 26, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in OBP.

Julio Puello (Blue) has only has one somewhat bad outing this season out of eight appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander started on July 21st and tossed six scoreless innings allowing two hits, two walks, hit one batter, and struck out six for the winning decision (4-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-6.  The April 29, 2018 free agent signing leads the starting rotation with a 0.98 WHIP.

Carlos Soler (Blue) has a 15-game on-base streak that includes five consecutive games with two or more hits.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 11-for-20 (.550) with three doubles, one triple, ten RBIs (four w/two-outs), eight runs, two walks, one stolen base, and four strikeouts.  He played all four games in center field.  The July 2, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in AVG, hits, and total bases.

Who's Not:

Allinson Benitez (Red) has a disastrous start this past week.  The 18-year old right-hander only faced six batters on July 17th before being pulled.  He coughed up four hits, five earned run, two walks, and threw one wild pitch for the losing decision (0-1).

Augusto Calderon (Red) has allowed one or more runs in each of his five appearances this season.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched on July 19th and gave up two hits, three earned runs, one walk, hit one batter, threw two wild pitches, and struck one out over one inning.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0.

Gabriel Contreras (Red) has given up one or more runs in his last three outings.  The 17-year old right-hander was called from the pen on July 17th and went on to allow three hits, four earned runs, two walks, and struck two out while only facing seven batters.

Derek Diaz (Blue) was hit hard in his latest outing after two good performances.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched one inning out of the bullpen on July 21st and gave up three hits, three earned runs, one home run, and one walk.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-1.

Ramon Fernandez (Blue) had one good outing and couldn't make it out of the inning in the next.  The 19-year old right-hander pitched on July 18th and went one inning allowing no hits or runs, and struck one out.  On July 21st, he walked all three batters faced and all scored without recording an out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1.

Francisco Hernandez (Red) began the week on a four-game hitless streak, ending his seven-game on-base streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-13 (.077) with one run, one walk, and two strikeouts.  He played five games at third base.

Alexander Samuel (Blue) managed to end his hitless streak at four games, but struck out in half his at-bats.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-12 (.167) with one two-out RBI, one run, and six strikeouts.  He played two games in left field and one as designated hitter.

Notes:

Ronald Suarez (Red) has been out of action since June 29th, Darlyn Del Villar (Blue) since June 30th, and Elvin DeJesus (Blue) since July 4th.

Sebastian Tabata (Red) returned to action after missing over two weeks.  The 20-year old right-hander pitched on July 21st allowing one hit, one unearned run, and struck out a career-high five over two innings.

Miguel Yedis (Blue) missed the same amount of time as Tabata.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched on July 21st and allowed one hit, no runs, and struck one out over one inning.

Alexander Samuel was transferred from Red to Blue on July 16th.

Freddy Pacheco (Blue) was promoted to short-season rookie-level Gulf Coast League on July 17th.  The 20-year old right-hander made 11 relief appearances posting a 3-0 record, 1.50 ERA, and four saves.  He allowed seven hits, four runs (three earned), eight walks, and struck out 35 over 18 innings.

Enmanuel Solano was returned to Blue after a short stint with short-season rookie-level Gulf Coast League.  He made his return debut on July 19th and gave up six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and struck one out for the winning decision (3-0).

Dominican Summer League Stats:

The Cardinals Blue are hitting .264 (368-for-1392, 5th) with 93 doubles (1st), 36 triples (2nd), 23 home runs (t-2nd), 248 RBIs (1st), 602 total bases (1st), 298 runs (1st), 222 walks (t-4th), 43 stolen bases(t-6th worst), 360 strikeouts (9th worst), 21 caught stealing (6th best), .374 OBP (t-2nd), .432 SLG (1st), and .806 OPS (1st).
