Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-6-18



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue took four of their seven games completed this period, winning the last three.  The club is 36-18 and are one game out of first place, behind the Twins, in the South Division.  They are 19-8 defending home and 17-10 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red lost four of six games on the schedule, but did get a victory in the last.  The club is 28-25 and are seven and a half games out of first place in the San Pedro Dvision and 12 games from being eliminated from postseason play.  They are 17-10 at home and 11-15 as the visitors.

Week In Review:

July 30, 2018: Nationals beat Cardinals Blue 8-6: The Nationals jumped out in front early and the Cardinals responded with five in the third, but the Nats continued as the bullpen took over.  Josue Ramirez struck out one over one scoreless inning of relief.  Ramon Mendoza tripled and drove in three runs.

July 30, 2018: Diamondbacks Two beat Cardinals Red 6-1:  The Cardinals were first to the board and went silent for the remainder of the contest as the Diamondbacks scattered runs and shut things down.  Miguel Maiz struck out five and allowed four hits and one earned run over three innings in the start.  Franklin Soto singled and drove in one run.

July 31, 2018: Nationals beat Cardinals Blue 2-1:  Both teams had strong pitching but the Nationals held the Cardinals out almost the entire contest for the two-game sweep.  Enmanuel Solano gave up six hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck one out over the seven-inning start.  Jose Zapata singled twice and knocked in the Cardinals only run.

July 31, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Diamondbacks Two 8-3:  The Cardinals capitalized on the Diamondback errors and the bullpen closed out the game.  Wilman Madera tossed three scoreless innings of relief and gave up one hit, no runs, three walks, and struck one out.  Luis Montano singled, walked twice, and knocked in two runs.

August 1, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Mets One 5-3 (completion of July 16 game): The Mets took the lead in the fourth only to hand it back over as the Cardinals scored four in the fifth.  Anthony Trompiz pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a hit or run and struck one out for the save.  Adanson Cruz doubled and drove in two runs as a late entry in the contest.

August 1, 2018: Mets One beat Cardinals Blue 5-1:  The Cardinals offense came up lame and the defense handed a couple extra runs to the Mets.  Miguel Yedis tossed two hitless/scoreless innings of relief.  Jean Selmo singled and drove in the Cardinals only run.

August 1, 2018: Tigers One beat Cardinals Red 6-1:  The Tigers kept the Cardinals offense silent the entire game.  Nelson Prada pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit, no runs, and striking out one.  Luis Andujar singled and knocked in the Cardinals only run.

August 2, 2018: Mets One beat Cardinals Blue 4-2:  The Cardinals had great pitching to open and the bullpen failed to contain the Mets in the late innings.  Julio Puello struck out five and gave up one hit, no runs, and one walk for the six-inning start.  Malcom Nunez singled twice, walked, and knocked in one run.

August 2, 2018: Tigers One beat Cardinals Red 5-2:  The Cardinals scored first but couldn't recover after the Tigers put three up in the bottom of the opening inning.  Roy Garcia struck out three over two scoreless innings of relief.  Jesus Orecchia collected two singles and one RBI.

August 3, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 1-0:  Both teams were top notch on the hill but the Cardinals took advantage of an error the claim the contest.  Francis Ventura went seven innings in the start and allowed four hits, no runs, three walks, and struck five out.  Malcom Nunez doubled (only extra base hit) and walked.

August 3, 2018: Rangers Two beat Cardinals Red 11-8:  The Rangers jumped out in front early and took advantage of the Cardinals errors to claim the contest.  Miguel Maiz struck out two of four batters in the final inning.  Cristhian Longa singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

August 4, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Yankees 5-3:  The offense banged in the begging of the contest and the bullpen took over and shut things down as the Cardinals pulled off the win.  Leandro Taveras struck out two over one scoreless inning.  Malcom Nunez singled twice, doubled, and drove in two runs.

August 4, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Rangers Two 6-1:  Things came together for the Cardinals as they ended their losing streak at three games with the help of strong arms and some live bats.  Allinson Benitez gave up three hits, one earned run, four walks, and struck two out over the five inning start.  Luis Montano contributed two doubles and three RBIs.

Who's Hot:

Joerlin De Los Santos (Red) reached base safely in his last six games and has collected two or more hits in three straight contests.  The 17-year old right-handed went 10-for-25 (.400) with one triple, one RBI, seven runs, two walks, one sacrifice, one stolen base, two strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played five games in center field (one outfield assist, assisted in one double play, and one fielding error) and one in left.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in AVG, OBP, SLG, hits, runs, total bases, and stolen bases.

Francisco Hernandez (Red) has a three-game hitting streak to build on in the coming week.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-18 (.333) with three doubles, three two-out RBIs, one run, two walks, and five strikeouts.  He played five games at third base where he assisted in one double play and committed three errors (one fielding and two throwing).

Cristhian Longa (Red) has two multi-hit games in the last five.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-26 (.308) with one double, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, one hit by pitch, and three strikeouts.  He played four games at first base (assisted in two double plays) and two behind the plate (assisted in one double play and allowed five stolen bases).

Wilman Madera (Red) hasn't given up a run in his last five appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander was called from the pen on July 30th and went three innings, allowing one hit, no runs, two walks, struck one out, and picked one runner off for the save (3).  On August 4th, he tossed two scoreless innings giving up two hits, two walks, and struck three out for the hold (1).  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-1 and held all three inherited runners on base.

Malcom Nunez (Blue) has reached base safely in 24 straight games and has collected in a hit in 18 consecutive contests.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 10-for-20 (.500) with three doubles, four RBIs (two w/two-outs), two runs, three walks (one intentional), one hit by pitch, and five strikeouts.  He played four games at third base (assisted in one double play), one as designated hitter, and one at first base (assisted in one double play).

Julio Puello (Blue) continues to be one of the top starters in the league with his third scoreless appearance of the season.  The 19-year old right-hander opened on August 2nd and gave up one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck five out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-6.  The April 29, 2018 free agent signing is currently 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA and has struck out 43 over 46.2 innings while in the starting rotation.

Francis Ventura (Blue) has tossed two consecutive scoreless appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander started on August 3rd and allowed four hits, no runs, three walks, and struck five out for the winning decision (3-2).  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 7-to-6.

Who's Not:

Gabriel Contreras (Red) is still dealing with control issues that have plagued him all season.  The 17-year old right-hander faced six batters on August 3rd and gave up one hit, three earned runs, three walks, hit one batter, and threw four wild pitches.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0 and let three inherited runners score.

Pablo Gomez (Blue) has only collected one hit in the last four games played and three in last seven.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-13 (.077) with three strikeouts and grounded into one double play.  He played three games at second base (assisted in five double plays) and one at shortstop (assisted in two double plays).

Inohan Paniagua (Blue) coughed up three or more runs in has last two starts.  The 18-year old right-hander started on July 30th and gave up six hits, four runs (three earned), two walks, and struck out a season-high five.  Then on August 4th, he opened and allowed four hits, three earned runs, one home run, one walk, and matched his season-high with five strikeouts.  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-3.

Gustavo J. Rodriguez (Red) has allowed one run in his first two appearances of his pro career.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched one July 30th and gave up two hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and threw one wild pitch after facing seven batters.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0.

Luis Rodriguez (Blue) connected for one hit during this past week.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-11 (.091) with one stolen base and two strikeouts.  He played all three games at catcher where he threw out two of three base runners, assisted in one double play, and has one passed ball.

Yowelfy Rosario (Red) managed to end his three-game hitting streak by collecting a hit in his last two contests.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-16 (.125) with one double, one RBI, one run, two walks, six strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays.  He played five games at shortstop where he assisted in two double plays and committed one fielding error.  Since joining the red squad, the July 2, 2016 free agent signing has seen his AVG, OBP, and SLG all dip.

Larimel Soriano (Blue) has given up three runs and walked three or more in his last two of three relief appearances.  The 18-year old right-hander faced seven batters on August 2nd and allowed three hits, three earned runs, and three walks for the blown save (1) and losing decision (2-2).

Notes:

Ronald Suarez (Red) has been out of action since June 29th, Darlyn Del Villar (Blue) since June 30th, and Leudy Pena (Blue) since July 23rd.

Carlos Solar (Blue) was promoted to short-season rookie-level Guld Coast League.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter had played in 89 DSL games going 102-for-347 (.294) with 17 doubles, 13 triples, two home runs, 54 RBIs, 151 total bases, 71 runs, 39 walks, 13 stolen bases, 83 strikeouts, 15 cauight stealing, .377 OBP, .435 SLG, and .812 OPS.

Adanson Cruz was transferred from Red to Blue and Alexander Samuel the other way on July 30th.
