Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-20-18



The Cardinals Blue claimed four of six games played this past week with them ending on a one-winning streak.  The club is 46-20 and are tied for first place, with the Twins, in the South Division.  They are 25-8 at home and 21-12 on the road.

The Cardinals Red took three of five games played this past week and they lost their final contest.  The club is 37-29 and are nine and a half games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  The team is 22-11 defending home field and 15-18 as the guests and have been eliminated from postseason play.

Week In Review:

August 13, 2018: Angels beat Cardinals Blue 2-1:  The contest was pretty much decided by the pitching staffs of both teams with the Angels pulling out the victory.  Hector Soto struck out seven and allowed five hits and two runs over the five inning start.  Freddy DeJesus doubled, waled, and drove in one run.

August 13, 2018: Mets Two @ Cardinals Red was postponed

August 14, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Angels 8-7 in seven innings:  Another close game by the two teams as the runs came rushing in at the end of the contest and the Cardinals held on to win.  Daryln Del Villar singled, doubled, and drove in three runs.

August 14, 2018: Mets Two beat Cardinals Red 1-0 in game one of doubleheader:  Strong pitching by both teams defined the game and an error by the Cardinals handed the win to the Mets.  Jose Moreno pitched five innings and gave up two hits, one unearned run, one walk, and struck three out.  Claudio Ramirez collected the only extra-base hit with a double.

August 14, 2018: Mets Two lead Cardinals Red 1-0, suspended in first innings:  The game only saw four batters at the plate with the Mets scoring one run on the struggling Martin Cordova.

August 15, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Nationals 7-5:  The Cardinals capitlaized on Nationals errors and squeaked by with the win.  Leonardo Taveras pitched the final two and a third hitless/scoreless innings, striking out three and holding two inherited runners on base.  Malcom Nunez had two singled and two RBIs.

August 15, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Diamondbacks Two 15-5:  The Cardinals broke out the good bats and the Diamondbacks helped out committing six errors in the contest.  Ludwin Jimenez struck out eight and allowed only one hit and one walk over the six inning start.  Claudio Ramirez walked twice and hit a two-run homer.

August 16, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Nationals 10-3:  The pitching was strong and the bats were swinging for the Cardinals from the start to the end.  Inohan Panigua struck out five and allowed one hit, no runs, and one walk in the six inning start.  Malcom Nunez singled twice, doubled, walked,. and drove in two runs.

August 16, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Diamondbacks Two 8-3:  The Cardinals bats kept flowing into the second game and the pitching helped in the two-game sweep.  Allinson Benitez went four innings in the start and gave up five hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck five out.  Yowelfy Rosario walked twice, homered, and drove in two runs.

August 17, 2018: Mets One beat Cardinals Blue 5-4:  The Mets jumped out in front early and held off the Cardinals late game comeback.  Miguel Yedis pitched three innings mid-game and gave up two hits, one earned run, one walk, struck out one and held two inherited runners on base.  Pablo Gomez doubled and drove in two runs.

August 17, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Tigers One 4-3 in ten innings:  Both teams were held up by tough pitching and the game went into extras where the wheels came off but the Cardinals pulled it out in the bottom of the tenth.  Luis Ortiz struck out five and allowed four hits and one earned run over the five inning start.  Cristhian Longa singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

August 18, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Mets One 5-2:  Both teams exchanged runs in the first and the Cardinals took off offensively and the pitching held the Mets at bay for the victory.  Hector Soto struck out seven and allowed four hits and two earned runs over seven inning start.  Malcom Nunez walked and hit a solo home run.

August 18, 2018: Tigers One beat Cardinals Blue 6-5:  The Cardinals took a solid lead in the fifth and the bullpen coughed it up in the sixth and never came back in the loss.  Wilman Madera started and pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out six.  Luis Andujar singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

Who's Hot:

Hector De Los Santos (Red) returned to form after two sub par performances.  The 19-year old right-hander tied a career-high with three innings pitched on August 16th and alloed three hits, no runs, two walks, and struck three out for the winning decision (2-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-1.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing didn't give up an earned run from July 24-August 2 and then he struggled in the next two games.

Joerlin De Los Santos (Red) will look to extend his five-game on-base streak in the next week and has also scored in three consecutive contests.  The 17-year old right-hander went 7-for-15 (.467) with one double, one triple, three RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, two walks, three stolen bases, and four strikeouts.  He played four games in center field and committed one fielding error.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in AVG, OBP, SLG, hits, runs, total bases, and stolen bases.

Ludwin Jimenez (Red) bounced back from two poor starts.  The 17-year old right-hander opened on August 15th and tossed six scoreless innings allowing one hit, one walk, and struck eight out for the winning decision (4-3).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-2.

Wilman Madera (Red) moved back into to rotation after not allowing an earned run in his last five relief appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander started on August 18th and struck out six while giving up seven hits and one earned run over five innings.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-4.  The February 27, 2016 free agent signing is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, three saves, and has struck out 34 over 34.2 innings as a reliever this season.

Malcom Nunez (Blue) had his on-base streak snapped at 34 games during this period.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-20 (.400) with two doubles, one home run, six RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, one stolen base, and two strikeouts.  He played three games at third base, two as designated hitter, and one at first base (assisted in one double play).  The July 3, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in home runs, RBIs, and total bases.

Inohan Paniagua (Blue) has struck out five in each of his last four starts.  The 18-year old right-hander opened on August 16th and tied a career-high in innings pitched with six while only allowing one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck five out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-5.  The December 22, 2017 free agent signing has gone 18.1 innings with 19 hits, nine runs (seven earned), one home run, four walks, and 20 strikeouts in his last four starts (3.48 ERA).

Leonardo Taveras (Blue) has not allowed an earned run in his last four appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander picked up the win (4-1) on August 15th as he tossed two and a third hitless/scoreless innings while striking out three.  On August 18th, he pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit, one walk, and struck two out for the save (7).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-5 and help two inherited runners on base.  The September 12, 2016 free agent signing leads the team's relievers in wins, saves, innings pitched, and strikeouts.

Who's Not:

Gabriel Contreras (Red) is still searching for in control in the rookie league.  The 18-year old right-hander faced six batters on August 16th and gave up no hits, two earned runs, four walks, threw two wild pitches, and struck one out.  So far this season, the 2018 free agent signing has walked 30 compared to ten strikeouts over 12 innings.

Roy Garcia (Red) has not made it through one complete inning in three of his last four appearances.  The 17-year old right-hander faced seven batters on August 18th and gave up no hits, four earned runs, four walks, hit one batter, and struck one out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1.  The September 6, 2016 free agent signing has allowed three hits, nine runs (eight earned), 12 walks, hit one batter, and struck three out over 3.1 innings (23.23 ERA) in those last four games.

Sander Mora (Blue) has seen his batting average drop from .385 (July 3rd) to .237 (currently).  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-18 (.111) with one double, two RBIs (one w/two-outs), one walk, one hit by pitch, seven strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played two games at second base, two at shortstop, and one as designated hitter.

Dionys Rodriguez (Red) has allowed three or more runs in two of his last three appearances.  The 17-year old left-hander was called from the pen on August 15th and coughed up three hits, three runs (two earned), three walks, hit one batter, and struck one out over one inning.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-1.  The May 14, 2018 free agent signing has given up five hits, seven runs (six earned), seven walks, hit one batter, and struck two out over those three games of 2.2 innings (24.55 ERA).

Alexander Samuel (Red) is looking to end his three-game hitless streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-17 (.059) with one double, one RBI, three runs, two walks, seven strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played three games in left field and two in right.

Saniel Santana (Blue) struggled to get outs in both of his relief appearances this past week.  The 19-year old right-hander faced five batters on August 14th and allow3ed three hits, three earned runs, one home run, one walk, threw one wild pitch,l committed one pickoff error, and struck one out.  Then on August 17th, he hit the only batter he faced and let one of three of his inherited runners score.

Anthony Trompiz (Blue) had his no earned run streak end at six games.  The 20-year old right-hander faced six batters on August 16th and gave up three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck one out.  He had a ground out-t-fly out ratio of 1-to-0.  The last time the July 2, 2015 free agent signing allowed an earned run was on July 11th.

Notes:

Leudy Pena (Blue) has been out of action since July 23rd and Miguel Maiz (Red) since August 10th.

Angel Cuenca (Blue) returned after missing a little over three weeks.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched one inning of relief on August 16th, allowing one hit, one earned run, and one walk.

Luis Andujar (Red) returned to action on August 15th after missing 13 days.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 4-for-10 (.400) with one double, five RBIs, three runs, three walks, one hit by pitch, one stolen base, and one strikeout during the past week.

The Cardinals Blue are hitting .263 (582-for-2214, 3rd) with 142 doubles (1st), 45 triples (3rd), 33 home runs (t-5th), 376 RBIs (1st), 913 total bases (1st), 452 runs (1st), 326 walks (7th), 67 stolen bases (t-4th worst), 580 strikeouts (8th worst), 32 caught stealing (2nd best), .368 OBP (4th), .412 OBP (1st), and .780 OPS (2nd).
