Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-13-18



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Blue swept through their six-game scheduled and extended their winning streak to eight games.  The team is 42-18 and hold a one game lead over the Twins for first place in the South Division.  They are 22-8 at home and 20-10 on the road.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals Red took five of seven games completed during this period and ended the week with a win.  The club is 33-27 and are eight games out of first place in the San Pedro Division and five games from being eliminated from postseason play.  They are 19-11 defending home field and 14-16 when the visitor.

Week In Review:

August 6, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 6-2: Each team exchanged runs in the first inning and then the Cardinals took off as the game progressed.  Angel Ortega pitched two scoreless frames to end the game.  Malcom Nunez singled, doubled, walked, and drove in two runs.

August 6, 2018: Cardinals Red @ Brewers was postponed

August 7, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Rockies 14-8: The Rockies jumped out in front midway through the game but couldn't hold as walks and errors pushed the contest the Cardinals direction.  Hector Soto struck out a career-high ten but gave up seven hits and four runs in the five inning start.  Malcom Nunez doubled, homered twice, and drove in a career-high eight runs.

August 7, 2018: Brewers beat Cardinals Red 13-12 (game one): Both teams came out swinging the bat and capitalizing off each others errors, but the Brewers pulled off the victory in extras.  Gustavo J. Rodriguez pitched two scoreless innings, mid-game, and struck one out.  Joerlin De Los Santos collects one single, two doubles, one triple, and three RBIs.  Franklin Soto had three singles, one triple, and three RBIs.

August 7, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Brewers 12-4 (game two): The Cardinals bats carried over their success, at the plate, into this contest as they racked up 16 hits and 12 runs.  Jose Moreno struck out four and allowed four hits, two unearned runs, and one walk over the five inning start.  Erik Pena singled, tripled, walks, and drove in three runs.

August 8, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Twins 12-4 (game one): The Cardinals came out swinging in the second inning as the team pounded on the Twins for a majority of the contest.  Leonadro Taveras struck out four over the final three scoreless innings.  Pablo Gomez doubled twice, walked, and drove in three runs and Freddy DeJesus added two singles, one walk, and three RBIs.

August 8, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Twins 17-2 (game two): The Cardinals picked up right where they left off in the previous game, racking up extra base hits and taking advantage of walks and errors.  Francis Ventura started and pitched five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out six.  Ramon Mendoza walked, tripled, homered, and drove in four runs.

August 8, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 17-9:  The offense kept going for the Cardinals as they plated 17 runs on 14 hits, ten walks, two hit by pitches, and three Cubbie errors.  Nelson Prada tossed two scoreless frames to finish the contest allowing one hit and striking out three.  Claudio Ramirez doubled twice and drove in a career-high four runs.

August 9, 2018:  Cardinals Blue had unusual scheduled off day.

August 9, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 6-3 (completion of July 23rd game):  The Cardinals jumped on the Cubs in the third and fourth innings and held the Cubs in check for the win.  Wilman Madera struck out five and allowed three hits and one run over five innings.  Cristhian Longa singled, walked, and drove in two runs.

August 9, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Cubs Two 12-6 (game two): The Cardinals offense plated eight runs over the first three innings and slammed the door shut in the seventh with four more.  Sebastian Tabata struck out two of four batters faced in the seventh.  Joerlin De Los Santos singled twice, doubled, tripled, and drove in four runs.

August 10, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Phillies Red 3-2: The game went down to the wire as both teams received solid pitching performance but the Cardinals pulled it off in the bottom of the ninth.  Anthony Trompiz pitched two scoreless frames to finish the game.  Adanson Cruz had two doubles.

August 10, 2018: Phillies White beat Cardinals 4-3:  The Cardinals took an early lead after three innings but couldn't hold the game as the offense went silent.  Allinson Benitez struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed two hits, one earned run, and one walk over five innings.  Luis Montano singled twice and drove in one run.

August 11, 2018: Cardinals Blue beat Phillies Red 4-0: The Cardinals pitching was strong once again and the offense was slow to get going but had some help in the walk and error department from Phillies.  Enmanuel Solano struck out three and allows eight hits over six scoreless innings for the start.  Malcom Nunez walked and hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.

August 11, 2018: Cardinals Red beat Phillies White 7-6: The Cardinals took an early lead but the Phillies took the over in the top of the ninth, only to lose it in the bottom half.  Luis Ortiz started and pitched five innings allowing four hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck one out.  Claudio Ramirez singled, tripled, and drove in one run.

Who's Hot:

Allinson Benitez (Red) has only allowed one run in each of his last two starts.  The 18-year old right-hander opened ion August 10th and gave up two hits, one earned runs, one home run, two walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck out a career-high nine.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-2.  Since returning to action on July 5th, the July 2, 2016 free agent signing has logged 21.2 innings allowing 16 hits, nine earned runs (3.82 ERA), one home run, 13 walks, and 20 strikeouts.

Freddy DeJesus (Blue) had his hitting streak end at six games but extended hit on-base streak to 24.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-23 (.391) with three doubles, six RBIs (three w/two-outs), six runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, grounded into one double play, and was picked off.  He played five games at first base (assisted in three double plays and one fielding error) and one as designated hitter.  The September 6, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in doubles, walks, and strikeouts.

Joerlin De Los Santos (Red) has collected six multi-hit games in his last eight played.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 12-for-19 (.632) with four doubles, two triples, five RBIs (three w/two-outs), eight runs, two walks, one stolen base, one strikeout, and one caught stealing.  He played five games in center field where he had one outfield assist.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, hits, runs, total bases, and stolen bases.

Francisco Hernandez (Red) will look to extend hit nine-game on-base streak in the next week and has scored a run in six consecutive contests.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-21 (.429) with three doubles, five RBIs, eight runs, five walks, two hit by pitches, one stolen base, five strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played five game at third base and one as designated hitter.

Cristhian Longa (Red) ended last week with a six-game hitting streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-28 (.392) with three doubles, four RBIs (one w/two-outs), seven runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, six strikeouts, one caught stealing, grounded into one double play, and was picked off twice.  He played six games at first base where he assisted in two double plays.  The February 3, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in home runs.

Luis Montano (Red) has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games which includes a hit in his last nine and RBI in last seven played.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 10-for-24 (.417) with three doubles, two triples, nine RBIs (one w/two-outs), six runs, three walks, one sacrifice, two sac flies, and seven strikeouts.  He played five games in right field and one in center.  The July 2, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in doubles, RBIs, walks, and strikeouts.

Darlin Moquete (Blue) ended the week on a six-game hitting streak including multiple hits in last five.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-24 (.458) with one double, five RBIs (two w/two-outs), 11 runs, one walk, one sac fly, and five strikeouts.  He plated five games in right field and had one outfield assist.  The April 21, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in stolen bases.

Malcom Nunez (Blue) had his hitting streak snapped at 22 games but extended his on-base streak to 30.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-23 (.391) with three doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI (eight w/two-outs), eight runs, six walks (one intentional), three strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played five games at third base and one at first (assisted in one double play).  The July 3, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in home runs, RBIs, and total bases.

Erik Pena (Red) has collected four multi-hit games in his last seven played.  The 18-year old switch-hitter went 7-for-21 (.333) with one triple, one home run, seven RBIs, six runs, three walks, one hit by pitch, one sac fly, five strikeouts, and two caught stealing.  He played four games at second base (assisted in one double play and one missed catch error), and one center field.

Claudio Ramirez (Red) has a six-game on-base streak to add to in the next week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-23 (.398) with four doubles, one triple, six RBIs (one w/two-outs),. seven runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, one stolen base, seven strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played four games in left field (one outfield assist and one throwing error) and two as designated hitter.

Enmanuel Solano (Blue) didn't give up an earned run in either of his starts this past week.  The 19-year old right-hander started on August 6th and allowed five hits, two unearned runs, one walk, threw one wild pitch, and struck three out over five and a third innings for the winning decision (5-1).  On August 11th, he tossed six scoreless frames with eight hits and three strikeouts for the winning decision (6-1).  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 14-to-11.  Since returning to the DSL, the July 2, 2016 free agent signing has  posted a 4-1 record, 1.84 ERA, and 1.33 WHIP over five openings.

Franklin Soto (Red) has a 14-game on-base streak that includes hitting safely in past three games.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-22 (.409) with two doubles, one triple, six RBIs, nine runs, six walks, two sac flies, one stolen base, three strikeouts, grounded into two double plays, and was picked off.  He played three games at shortstop, two as designated hitter, and one at second base (assisted in one double play and two throwing errors).

Anthony Trompiz (Blue) has not given up an earned run in his last six appearances.  The 20-year old right-hander tossed two scoreless innings on August 10th only giving up two hits.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-2.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing has been locked in during the six game span with 8.1 innings, eight hits, one unearned run, one hit by pitch, and two strikeouts.

Francis Ventura (Blue) has made three consecutive quality starts.  The 19-year old right-hander started on August 8th and allowed three hits, one earned run, one walk, threw two wild pitches, and struck out six over five innings for the winning decision (4-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-2.

Leudy Pena (Blue) has been out of action since July 23rd, Angel Cuenca (Blue) since July 25th, and Luis Andujar (Red) since August 2nd.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed 16-year old infield prospect Bryan Matute for the 2019 season.  He trained in the Alex Gonzalez Academy in Venezuela.

Darlyin Del Villar (Blue), who missed almost five weeks of action, returned onm August 10th.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter played in two games going 2-for-7 (.286) with one RBI, one run, and two strikeouts.

Ronald Suarez (Red), who missed two more days than Del Villar, returned on August 11th.  The 18-year old right-hander pitched one inning of relief and allowed no hits, one earned run, and one walk.
