Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-22-16



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals took four of the six games during the week and ended on a losing note and are 14-4 during the month of August to stay in the race.  The Redbirds have a 43-23 record with a .652 PCT, five game behind the first-place Rockies, and two games away from postseason elimination.  The team is 22-11 at home and 21-12 on the road.

Week In Review:

August 15, 2016: The Cardinals opened the week with a two-game set against the Angels.  The Redbirds hosted and began the scoring right off the bat with two runs in the first.  The Cardinals then added two in the third, five in the fourth, and three more in the fifth before the Halos even tacked on a run.  Diego Cordero tossed three scoreless innings for the start and Winston Nicacio followed with four innings allowing one run.  Carlos Soto singled, doubled twice, walked twice, homered, and drove in four runs.  Brian Sanchez walked and hit a two-run homer.

August 16, 2016: The Cardinals went on the road in the second game against the Angels.  The Redbirds plated one in the third and the Halos tied it up in the sixth.  Both teams exchanged zeroes from the seventh to ninth and the Cardinals came through with the winning run in the tenth.  Francis Ventura struck out one over four scoreless innings for the start.  Brian Sanchez singled, walked twice, and drove in one run.

August 17, 2016: The Cardinals stayed out on the road to take on the Brewers.  Both teams pitching staffs were on their game as both teams were limited to a total of ten hits.  The Brewers however were much better and kept the Redbirds out of the game while scoring two runs.  Junior Gonzalez struck out two and allowed one run over five innings in the start.  Enmanuel Solano followed with two scoreless innings.

August 18, 2016: The Brewers visited the Cardinals in the second game.  The Brew Crew plated four runs on the Redbirds in the third inning but it wasn't enough.  The Cardinals answered back with six in the fifth and held the Brewers out of the fame after their four.  Brian Pirela, Cristhian Lugo, Enrique Perez, and Fabian Blanco combined for seven innings of relief and struck a total of eight out.  Wadye Ynfante tripled and drove in three runs.

August 19, 2016: The Cardinals went on the road to face the Yankees Two in the final series of the week.  The Yanks put one run up in the third and two more in the seventh, while keeping the Redbirds off the scoreboard through the seventh inning.  The Cardinals came back to win with two in the eighth and two more in the ninth.  Edwar Ramirez struck out three and allowed one run over six innings in the start.  Jonathan Machado singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

August 20, 2016: The Cardinals welcomed in the Yankees Two in the second game on the series.  The Yanks pitching was dominant  with nine scoreless innings and six hits.  The Yankees scored one in the fourth, one in the seventh, and one more in the eight for the win.  Winston Nicacio struck out eight and allowed one run over five innings in the start.  Dariel Gomez singles twice and walked twice.

Who's Hot:

Carlos Soto began the week started off the week on a three-game hitting streak but ended in final contest.  The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 5-for-16 (.313) with three doubles, one home run, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), three runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.  He played two games at catcher (committed one missed catch error and allowed two stolen bases) and two as designated hitter.

Esequeil Delgado looks to extend his four-game on base streak and three-game hit streak into the next week.  The 18-year old switch-hitter went 4-for-13 (.308) with one double, one RBI, one run, four walks, and three strikeouts.  He played four games at second base and committed one fielding error.  The July 3, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in walks and is tied in stolen bases.

Junior Gonzalez has pitched two consecutive quality outings for the Cardinals and three out of last four.  The 19-year old right-hander started on August 17th and went five innings allowing two hits, one unearned run, two walks, and struck two out for the losing decision (4-4).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 8-to-2.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitched, hits allowed, earned runs, and losses.

Edwar Ramirez has made two consecutive quality starts and four of the last five.  The 18-year old right-hander started on August 19th and tossed six innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run, one walk, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch, committed one throwing error, and struck three out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 9-to-1.  The February 11, 2015 free agent signing is tied for the team lead in wins.

Winston Nicacio another who has put up two consecutive outings after eight so-so showings.  The 19-year old was called on for relief on August 15th and pitched four innings allowing four hits, one earned run, three walks, and struck two out for the win (3-2).  He then stated on August 20th and tossed five innings giving up three hits, one earned run, one walk, hit two batters, threw one wild pitch, and struck out a career-high eight for the losing decision (3-3).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-7.  The November 6, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in runs allowed and walks permitted.

Francis Ventura has pitched very well in his last four games.  The 17-year old right-hander returned to the starting role on August 16th and pitched four innings and allowed one hit, no runs, and struck one out.  He had a ground out-to-fly ratio of 7-to-2.  The August 3, 2015 free agent signing has the best ERA among the relief corp.

Fabian Blanco hasn't given up an earned run in his last five appearances.  The 18-year old left-hander pitched on August 16th and gave up one hit, no runs, one walk, one balk, and struck four out over one and two-thirds innings for the winning decision (4-2).  On August 18th, he tossed one hitless/scoreless inning and struck one out for the save (7).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-0 and held both inherited runners on base.  The August 6, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in  saves and has truck out 44 over 28 innings.

Who's Not:

Leandro Cedeno had his on-base streak come to an end at 19 games and now has a three-game hitless streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-11 (.000) with two walks and two strikeouts.  He played three games at first base, assisting in two double plays and committed one throwing error.  The August 9, 2014 free agent signing is tied for the team lead in doubles.

Raffy Ozuna ended his hitless streak at six games and has only connected for a hit in four out of his last 20 games played.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-14 (.071) with one walk and four strikeouts.  He played three games at shortstop (assisted in one double play, committed one fielding error and one missed catch error) and one as designated hitter.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in strikeouts.

Diomedes Del Rio hasn't picked up a hit in his last four games.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 0-for-5 (.000) with one walk, one run, one stolen base, and one strikeout.  He played one game in right field, two in center, and one as designated hitter.

Notes:

Andres Luna has been out of action since July 9th and Noel DeJesus since August 13th.  Hector Linares and Oscar Cotes only each played in one game in the last week.

Dominican  Summer League Stats:

The team is batting .266 (3rd, 603-for-2267) with 129 doubles (1st), 32 triples (3rd), 34 home runs (1st), 350 RBIs (1st), 898 total bases (1st), 422 runs (1st), 335 walks (3rd), 37 stolen bases (last), 524 strikeouts (4th worst), 14 caught stealing (best), .367 OBP (2nd), .396 SLG (1st), and .763 OPS (1st).

The club has a 43-23 record with 3.57 ERA (24th), 1.32 WHIP (16th), three shutouts, 18 holds (6th), and 19 saves.  They have allowed 554 hits (t-7th worst), 300 runs, 232 earned runs, 14 home runs, 216 walks (t-8th best), hit 59 batters, and struck 558 out (best) over 585 innings.

Brian Sanchez is tied for sixth in AVG, tied for seventh in runs scored, tied for third in hits, tied for tenth in triples, first in home runs, first in RBIs, first in total bases, tied for sixth in strikeouts, seventh in OBP, first in SLG, and first in OPS.

Wadye Ynfante is tied for ninth in AVG, fourth in runs scored, fifth in OBP, and seventh in OBP.

Esequeil Delgado is second in walks.

Raffy Ozuna is tied for fourth in strikeouts.

Leandro Cedeno is seventh in OBP.

Fabian Blanco is tenth in saves

Junior Gonzalez is tied for sixth in hits allowed, tied for third in earned runs, and tied for fourth in home runs allowed.

Winston Nicacio is tied for eighth in runs allowed and tied for eighth in walks allowed.

Brian Pirela is tied for sixth in holds.
