Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-8-16

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals opened up the schedule winning their first five games but ended on a loss.  The team is 34-20 with a .630 PCT and are six games behind the first place Rockies, who have won 17 straight games.  They are 18-9 at home and 16-11 on the road.

Week In Review:

August 1, 2016: The Cardinals began the week with a two-game series against the Brewers.  Both teams exchanged runs in the first, then the Redbirds plated three over the third and fourth innings to take the lead.  The Cardinals came through with another two runs in the seventh and held the Brew Crew out until the ninth inning.  Edwar Ramirez struck out three and allowed one run over six innings in the start.  Brian Sanchez doubled and drove in two runs.

August 2, 2016: The Cardinals hosted the Brewers for the second game of the series.  The Brew Crew scored first in the second but the Redbirds answered back with two in the bottom half, then tacked on three in the third, four in the fourth, and two more in the fifth.  The Cardinals pitching was solid shutting out the Brewers from the third to seventh innings.  The Brew Crew added one in the eighth but fell far short.  Noel DeJesus struck out five and allowed one run over six innings.  Brian Sanchez singled, homered, and drove in four runs and Dariel Gomez added two doubles and four RBIs.

August 3, 2016: The Cardinals welcomed in the Yankees Two club for the beginning of a two-game series.  The Redbirds offense carried over the offensive explosion from the previous game by scoring two in each of the first, third, fourth, fifth, and six innings and also plated four in the second for the 14 runs.  The Yanks only managed three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth as the Cardinals easily claimed the contest.  Francis Ventura pitched three relief innings and allowed one run and struck five out.  Enrique Perez followed with two scoreless innings and struck out four.  Dariel Gomez singled, doubled twice, and drove in four runs.

August 4, 2016: The Cardinals visited the Yankees Two in the second game of the series.  The Redbirds offensive kept burning as they scored three in the second and two in the fourth.  The Yanks stayed out the game and didn't show up until the seventh with two runs and didn't score again.  Johan Oviedo struck out six over three and two-thirds innings in the start.  Fabian Blanco struck out five of six batters faced and held the bases loaded on entry.  Oscar Cotes singled and hit a solo home run.

August 5, 2016: The Nationals visited the Cardinals to kick off the final two-game series for this report.  The Redbirds started things off with five runs over the first three frames to the Nats two.  The Nationals came back with five over the fifth through seventh and the Cardinals only score one.  The Nats racked on another in the ninth hoping for the victory but the Redbirds plated two in the bottom half to send it into extras.  Both clubs exchanged zeroes until the bottom of the 12th where the Cardinals picked up the win.  Wilfredo Pereira struck out three over the final three scoreless innings.  Oscar Cotes singled, tripled, walked, and drove in two runs.  Carlos Luis collected two singles and two RBIs.

August 6, 2016: The Cardinals, looking to sweep the week, visited the Nationals in the final game.  The Nats scored first with a run in the opening inning and both teams exchanged two in the third.  The Nationals plated two more in the fourth and another in the sixth, while the Redbirds only managed two in the eighth.  Wilman Madera finished off the contest with two scoreless innings and struck one out.  Oscar Cotes singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.
