Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-25-16



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals took four of seven games during this report and ended losing the final contest.  The Redbirds are 28-14 with a .667 PCT and allowed the Rockies, who they have a critical series coming up with, to tiptoe into a two-way tie for first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 14-7 at home and 14-7 on the road.

Week In Review:

July 18, 2016: To get things started in the second half, the Cardinals hosted the Yankees Two.  The Redbirds came out of the gate swinging and pounded out five runs in the first two frames for a 5-1 early lead.  The Yanks plated two in the fourth and the Cardinals responded with six more runs in the sixth.  With a 11-3 lead, the Redbirds coughed up four in the ninth and held onto the game for the win.  Enrique Perez struck out one over one and a third hitless/scoreless innings.  Julio Rodriguez walked, homered, and drove in three runs and Brian Sanchez came up a home run short of the cycle with two RBIs of his own.

July 19, 2016:  The Yankees Two welcomed in the Cardinals for the second game of the set and flipped the tables from the previous contest.  This time around the Yanks came out roaring out with 12 runs in the first four innings to the Redbirds one.  The Cardinals made no dent in the lead only scoring another three runs with the Yankees adding one more for a 13-4 loss.  Leandro Cedeno singled and hit a solo home run.  Wilman Madera put a stop to the bleeding by holding two inherited runners on and getting his only batter out in the fourth inning.

July 20, 2016:  The Nationals visited the Cardinals to complete the July 2nd contest and a regular game would follow.  The Redbirds bats, alive again, pushed nine runs across the plate in the first three frames to the Nats one.  The Cardinals added another three in the sixth and seventh, combined, while the Nats only managed another two for the 12-3 win.  Julio Rodriguez singled, tripled, and drove in four runs.  Edwar Ramirez bounced back from a rough week by allowing four hits, two earned runs, one walk, and striking out four over five innings of relief for the win.  Brian Pirela cleaned up with two scoreless innings.

July 20, 2016: The Cardinals hosted the Nationals in the second game of the doubleheader.  The Redbirds bats went silent and the Nats pitching dominated the contest.  The Cardinals only collects three hits and plated one run in the 3-1 loss.  Oscar Cotes knocked in one run in the bottom of the seven inning.  Enrique Perez tossed two scoreless frames.  Cristhian Lugo held two inherited runners on base and struck out two of four batters faced to finish off the game.

July 21, 2016: In the third game of the series, the Cardinals went out on the road to face the Nationals.  The Redbirds took an early 3-0 lead after four innings and the Nationals came back to tie and send into extras.  The Cardinals slipped a run across in the top of the tenth for the victory.  Brian Sanchez singed twice, homered, and drove in two runs.  Noel DeJesus struck out five over six scoreless innings.

July 22, 2016: The Cardinals visited the Braves in the final series of this report.  The Redbirds scored two in the first and both teams went silent until the fourth.  The Cardinals rallied with eight runs over the fourth through sixth innings and the Braves plated four over the fifth through seventh innings.  Both team exchanged runs in the ninth as the the Redbirds took the game with ease at 11-5.    Leandro Cedeno singled twice, tripled, walked twice, and drove in a career-high four runs.  Angel Rondon struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed one run over five innings for the win.

July 23, 2016:  The Cardinals hosted the Braves in the second game of the series and had the tables turned.  Each team scored three runs in the first inning and then the Braves took off in the third with two runs then plated another seven over the eight and ninth innings.  The Redbirds went scoreless for the final eight frames for the 12-3 loss.  Brian Pirela and Enrique Perez combined for three strikeouts over three scoreless innings and Leandro Cedeno doubled in one run.

Who's Hot:

Leandro Cedeno will look to extend his seven-game hitting streak in the next week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-19 (.474) with two doubles, one triple, one home run, six RBIs (three w/two-outs), five runs, three walks, and four strikeouts.  He played all five games at first base, assisting in two double plays.  The August 9, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in doubles and tied for team lead in triples.

Brian Sanchez has a two-game hit streak and collect two three-hit games this past week.  The 20-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-18 (.389) with one double, one triple, one home run, five RBIs (three w/two-outs), six runs, three walks, one sac fly, and two strikeouts.  He played six games in right field.  The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored, hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases, SLG, AVG, and OPS.

Wadye Ynfante will look to build on his three-game hit streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-17 (.353) with one double, two RBIs, four runs, two walks, one hit by pitch, one sac fly, and three strikeouts.  He played three games in centerfield, two in left, and two in right.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in OBP.

Noel DeJesus threw his first scoreless start of the season.  The 19-year old right-hander made the open on July 21st and struck out five, walked two, and allowed two hits over six innings.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 8-to-1.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads all starters in ERA and innings pitched.

Enrique Perez extended his scoreless appearances to five.  The 18-year old left-hander was called on for the July 18th contest and pitched one and a third hitless/scoreless innings and struck one out for the hold.  He then pitched again on July 20th, allowing one hit and no runs over two innings.  Perez made third appearance on July 23rd, giving up one hit and no runs over one inning.  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-1 and held one inherited runner on base.  The February 25, 2014 free agent signing leads all relievers in inning pitched.

Who's Not:

Carlos Soto went into a slump after a quick start to his professional career.  The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 1-for-15 (.067) with one RBI, one run, one walk, and two strikeouts.  He played all four games behind the plate and committed two throwing errors and threw out two of six base runners.

Moises Castillo only picked up one hit in the three games he played in and had his on base streak snapped at 11 games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-11 (.091) with two runs, three walks, one sacrifice, one stolen base, and three strikeouts.  He played all five games at shortstop and committed one throwing error and assisted in one double play.  The July 14, 2015 free agent signing is currently tied for the team lead in errors.

Junior Gonzalez turned in his shortest and worst appearance of his career this past week.  The 19-year old right-hander started on July 19th and was pulled in the second inning.  He coughed up nine hits, ten earned runs, one home run, two walks, and hit two batters over one and two-thirds innings for the losing decision.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-1.

Winston Nicacio has given up three or more runs in his last five starts.  The 19-year old right-hander started on July 18th and allowed no hits, three runs (two earned), six walks, hit one batter, and struck one out over three innings.  Then on July 23rd, he pitched four innings giving up seven hits, five runs (four earned), three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck two out for the losing decision (1-1).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 8-to-5.  The November 6, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in walks issued.

Estailin Tejada put out two of his worst relief appearances this season during the last week.  The 21-year old right-handed came in for relief on July 20th and gave up four hits, two earned runs, hit two batters, and struck three out over one and two-thirds innings.  On July 23rd, he allowed two hits, three earned runs, and one walk over two-thirds of an inning.  The May 27, 2015 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-2.

Notes:

Andres Luna has been out of action since June 9th.

Diego Cordero returned to action, on July 19th, after almost missing a month.  He pitched 1.2 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk, hit one batter, and struck two out.

Francis Ventura also returned to action, on July 21st, after missing almost a month.  He pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing two hits, two unearned runs, one walk, and struck two out.

Carlos Luis missed a week an a half of play returning on July 18th.  He played in two games going 2-for-7 (.286) with two runs, one hit by pitch, and three strikeouts and extended hit on base streak to a team-high 17 games.

Jonathan Machado made his professional debut on July 22nd.  He played in two games going 3-for-10 (.300) with one double, two runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Dominican Summer League Stats:

The team is hitting .266 (3rd, 382-for-1435) with 76 doubles (2nd), 23 triples (4th), 26 home runs (1st), 238 RBIs (1st), 292 runs (1st), 582 total bases (1st), 223 walks (2nd), 16 stolen bases (worst), 332 strikeouts (6th worst), 11 caught stealing (best), .372 OBP (4th), .406 SLG (t-1st), and .777 OPS (2nd).

The club is 28-14 with a 3.98 ERA (28th), 1.41 WHIP (t-24th), one shutout, 13 holds (6th), and 14 saves (t-8th).  They have allowed 369 hits (5th worst), 209 runs, 163 earned runs, nine home runs, 152 walks (tenth best), hit 40 batters, and struck 360 out (best) over 369 innings.

Brian Sanchez is ninth in AVG, third in runs scored, tied for fifth in hits, tied for tenth in triples, first in home runs, first in RBIs, first in total bases, first in SLG, and first in OPS.

Elehuris Montero is ninth in runs scored.

Leandro Cedeno is tied for tenth in triples, tied for seventh in RBIs, fifth in total bases, and fourth in SLG.

Esequeil Delgado is second in walks.

Raffy Ozuna is first in strikeouts.

Wadye Ynfante is eighth in OBP.

Fabian Blanco is tied for ninth in saves.

Junior Gonzalez is tied for third in home runs allowed.

Brian Pirela is tied for fourth in holds.
