Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-20-16

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals took all six games for this period with not much of a problem from the four teams they faced off against.  The team has a 10-2 record which is good for first in the San Pedro division and two games ahead of the second place club.

Recap:

June 13, 2016: The Cardinals opened up the week with the second contest of a two-game set against the Brewers.  The Redbirds took an early lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the first.  The two clubs swapped off runs until both were tied in the top half of the sixth inning.  In the bottom half of the sixth, the Cardinals plated two then added another ion the seventh as the bullpen closed the door.  Leandro Cedeno singled, homered, and drove in two runs and Brian Sanchez came up a home run short of the cycle with one RBI.  Fabian Blanco played stopper pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

June 14, 2016: The Cardinals hosted the Yankees Two clubs in the next game.  The Redbirds offense exploded scoring a season-high 17 runs which included Wadye Ynfante, Leandro Cedeno, Brian Sanchez, Carlos Luis, and Esequeil Delgado contributing multi RBIs.  Sanchez hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and Cedeno and Delgado also connected for homers during the contest.  Noel DeJesus struck out five and allowed one run over five innings in the piggy back start.

June 15, 2016: The Cardinals offense and pitching continued to roll in the second game against the Yankees Two.  The Redbirds posted three runs in the first and the Yanks came close but never touched the lead.  The Yankees scored one in the fourth and then fifth, but the Cardinals added three more in the final three frames.  Brian Sanchez kept the monster numbers coming with two singles, one home run, and four RBIs and Leandro Cedeno knocked in one run.  Junior Gonzalez gave up two runs over six while Wilfredo Pereira and Enrique Perez combined for three scoreless frames to end the game.

June 16, 2016: The Cardinals offense and pitching stayed consistent as they hosted the Nationals.  The Redbirds plated two runs in the first, one in the fourth, and two in each of the sixth and seventh innings before the Nats showed up.  Raffy Ozuna hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Elehuris Montero collected three singles, one double, and two RBIs.  Winston Nicacio struck out five over five scoreless innings for the win.

June 17, 2016: The Nationals hosted and kept within distance of the streaking Cardinals.  The Redbirds struck first with five runs in the second and the Nats played catch up the rest of the contest.  The Nationals plated two runs (one in third and fifth).  The Cardinals put two more on the scoreboard in the sixth as the Nationals came up short with only four more.  Leandro Cedeno singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.  Cristhian Lugo, Brian Pirela, and Angel Rondon combined for three and a third scoreless innings to finish the Nats off.

June 18, 2016: The Cardinals stayed out on the road to face the Braves in the final game of the report.  The Redbirds offense stayed hot plating five runs in the first two frames.  The Braves never took the lead and were doubled up 8-4.  Raffy Ozuna singles twice, doubled, and drove in two runs and Leandro Cedeno singled twice, double twice, and knocked in one run.  Diego Cordero struck out a career-high seven and allowed two runs over six innings for the start.

Who's Hot:

Carlos Luis has connected for six multi-hit games with two coming in the last two games of this report.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-28 (.321) with three doubles, one triple, three RBIs, five runs, seven strikeouts, grounded into one double play, and was picked off.  He played six games in left field with one outfield assist.  The November 27, 20013 free agent signing is tied for the team lead in triples.

Winston Nicacio was the only starter to pitch a scoreless outing for this notebook.  The 19-year old right-hander was scheduled for June 16th and tossed five scoreless frames allowing four hits, one walk, threw two wild pitches, and struck out a season-high five for the winning decision (1-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-6.  The November 6, 2015 free agent signing has struck out eight and walked three over 7.2 innings this season.

Alvaro Seijas is not off to a great start in his professional career with a second consecutive so-so start.  The 17-year old right-handed started on June 17th, allowing a season-high ten hits, six earned runs, and struck out seven over 5.2 innings for the winning decision (1-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-3.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the starting rotation in hits allowed, runs and earned runs, walks, and has worst ERA.

Edwar Ramirez is still struggling to get his career going in the right direction, but showing some signs of life.  The 18-year old right-hander piggy backed Nicacio on June 16th and gave up six hits, two earned runs, three walks, and struck four out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-2.  The February 11, 2015 free agent signing has a 12.60 ERA and 3.40 WHIP.
