Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-4-16



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals claimed all five games played this week and have taken eight of their last nine.  The Redbirds ate 19-5 with a .792 PCT and are three games ahead of the second place Rockies in the San Pedro Division.  They have a 10-2 record at home and are 9-3 on the road.

Week In Review:

June 27, 2016: The Cardinals visited the Angels to open this weeks notebook.  The Redbirds and Halos pitching each dominated until the sixth inning.  The Cardinals plated four in the sixth, one in the seventh, and four more in the eighth while the bullpen held the Angels out of the game.  The Halos issued a total of 17 walks and only four hits to the Redbirds.  Junior Gonzalez struck four four over six scoreless innings and Estailin Tejada and Cristhian Lugo combined for three scoreless to follow.  Julio Rodriguez singled, walked twice, and drove in two runs.

June 28, 2016: Cardinals at Brewers was postponed

June 29, 2016: The Cardinals hosted the Brewers in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.  The Redbirds scored first but Brewers took the lead and held on until the eight and final inning.  William Jimenez collects two singles and two RBIs and Elehuris Montero came up a home run short for the cycle and drove in two runs.  Fabian Blanco held the bases loaded and struck out two over one and two-third scoreless innings for the win.

June 29, 2016: The Cardinals visited the Brewers for the Tuesday makeup game.  The Redbirds came out of the gate swinging, scoring four runs in the first inning.  The Cardinals then added another run in each of the third and fourth frames as the Brewers plated only one.  The Brewers got within reach with three in the sixth but the Redbirds slammed the door shut with five in the seventh.  Angel Rondon, in a spot start, struck out four over four scoreless innings.  Hector Linares hit a grand slam and also added two singles and one RBI.  William Jimenez collected two singles and two RBIs.

June 30, 2016:  The Cardinals welcomed in the Yankees Two for the final game of the month of June.  The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  The Yankees committed a total of seven errors which contributed to a couple Cardinals runs.  Edwar Ramirez struck out four and allowed one run over five innings for the win.  Julio Rodriguez singled twice and drove in three runs.

July 1, 2016: In the second game of the series, the Cardinals visited the Yankees Two.  The Redbirds scored three runs in the first and the Yanks followed with one in the bottom half.  Both team's pitching staffs turned it on and didn't allow a run for the remainder of the contest.  Noel DeJesus struck out four and allowed one run over five innings for the win.  Wilman Madera, Cristhian Lugo, and Fabian Blanco combined for five strikes out over four scoreless innings on the back half.  Oscar Cotes doubled and drove in one run and Carlos Luis singled twice and had one RBI.

July 2, 2016: Nationals at Cardinals was suspended.

Who's Hot:

Carlos Luis has a 12-game on base streak that includes hitting safely in four consecutive and scoring at least run in five straight games.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-18 (.333) with one triple, three RBIs (two w/two-outs), six runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, and four strikeouts.  He played five games in left field and committed one fielding error.  The November 27, 2013 free agent missed all last season with an undisclosed injury and leads the team in triples.

Julio Rodriguez extended his on base streak to nine games and had it snapped in the final game of this report.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 5-for-12 (.417) with six RBIs, three runs, two walks, one sac fly, and one strikeout.  He played four games behind the plate and threw out one of two base runners.

Noel DeJesus is becoming a solid arm in the rotation making now four of five quality appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander made his start on July 1st and allowed one hit, one unearned run, three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck four out over five innings for the winning decision (3-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-5.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, and leads all starting pitchers in ERA and WHIP.

Junior Gonzalez turned things around after getting hit hard in his last start.  The 19-year old right-hander started on June 27th and tossed six scoreless frames allowing only one hit, two walks, and struck four out  for the win (2-1).  He had a ground out-to-fly ratio of 9-to-1.

Edwar Ramirez did a complete transformation from how he has pitched all season in his latest start.  The 18-year old right-hander opened the June 30th contest going season-high five innings and giving up three hits, one unearned run, two walks, committed one pickof error, struck four out, and assisted in one double play for the winning decision (1-0).  He had a ground out-to-fly ratio of 6-to-2.

Fabian Blanco has not allowed a run in his last six relief appearances this season, spanning 8.1 innings.  The 18-year old left-hander was called from the bullpen on June 29th and threw one and two-thirds hitless/scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two for the winning decision (2-0).  On July 1st, he tossed one hitless/scoreless inning and again gave up two walks and struck two out.  Blanco had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0 and held the bases loaded in his first game of this notebook.  The August 6, 2014 free agent signing leads the club in saves and all relievers in strikeouts.

Who's Not:

Brian Sanchez has an eight-game on base streak but hasn't connected for a hit in his last three games and has struck out at least once in his last seven games.  The 20-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-13 (.077) with three runs, five walks, and six strikeouts.  He played four games in right field.  The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, and AVG.

Dariel Gomez has only managed one hit in his last six games.  The 19-year old left-handed hitter went 1-for-16 (.063) with one RBI, two runs, five walks, two strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played five games at first base where he assisted in four doubles plays nd committed one missed catch error.

Esequeil Delgado has reached base safely in 15 games but has not connected for a hit in two straight games.  The 18-year old switch-hitter went 1-for-13 (.077) with one RBI, one run, five walks, one sacrifice, two strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played four games at second base.  The July 3, 2014 free agent signing currently has the worst AVG on the club.

Jesus Garcia has allowed two or more runs in his last four relief appearances.  The 18-year old right-hander entered the June 29th game and gave up three hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and struck two out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-2.  The November 7, 2014 free agent signing has the worst ERA and WHIP on the pitching staff.

Notes:

Wadye Ynfante and Leandro Cedeno each only played in two games, Diego Cedeno last pitched on June 24th, and Andres Luna last played in June 9th.

Estailin Tejada returned to action after missing three weeks and pitched in two games allowing one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck five out and earning one save.

St. Louis opened the international signing period by agreeing to contract with Cuban RHP Johan Oviedo ($1.9M), Venezuelan OF Victor Garcia ($1.5M), Dominican OF Carlos Soler ($600K), Dominican SS Franklin Soto ($550K), Mexican C Carlos Soto (primed him away from Campeche, in the Mexican League, with $400K), Venezuelan RHP Allinson Benitez, Venezuelan CF Diomedes Del Rio, Dominican OF Luis Montano, Dominican SS Yowelfy Rosario, Dominican OF Alexander Samuel ($100K), Dominican RHP Enmanuel Solano (signed by scout Angel Ovalles, who also nabbed Alex Reyes), Venezuelan C Joyser Garcia, and Dominican RHP Rodard Avelino.

St. Louis is still in the process of working out a deal with Cuban CF Jonathan Machado for what is being rumored at $2.3M.

The team is hitting .282 (2nd, 233-for-826) with 49 doubles (1st), 14 triples (4th), 15 home runs (t-2nd), 156 RBIs (1st), 188 runs (1st), 355 total bases (1st), 136 walks (3rd), ten stolen bases (2nd worst), 189 strikeouts, five caught stealing (tied for best), .391 OBP (1st), .430 SLG (1st), and ,821 OPS (1st).

The clubs has a 19-5 record with 3.35 ERA (16th), 1.37 WHIP (19th), nine holds (t-3rd), ten saves (t-5th), and one shutout.  They have allowed 196 hits, 105 runs, 78 earned runs, four home runs (t-8th best), 90 walks, hit 20 batters, and struck out 212 (best) over 209.1 innings.

Brian Sanchez is tied for 5th in AVG, tied for 4th in runs scored, tied for 4th in hits, 1st in home runs, 1st in RBIs, 1st in total bases, 9th in OBP, 1st in SLG, and 1st in OPS.
Elehuris Montero is tied for 1st in runs scored
