Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-27-16
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals had the their winning streak snapped at seven games after the first game of the week. The team went on to take three of the final five games, losing their last, of this report. They are currently 14-5 (.737) with a one game lead over the second place Rockies. The Cardinals have a 8-2 home record and are 6-3 on the road.
Recap:
June 20, 2016: The Cardinals opened this notebook up hosting the Braves in the second game of the series. The Braves scored a run in the first inning and were shut out for the remainder of the game. The Redbirds put two on in the second and three in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Noel DeJesus started and struck our four and allowed one run over six innings. His piggyback partner, Francis Ventura pitched three scoreless to end the contest. Moises Castillo singled, doubled, and drove in two runs and Raffy Ozuna added a double and two RBIs.
June 21, 2016: The Cardinals welcomed in the Rockies for the beginning of a two-game set. The Rockies scored first but the Redbirds took an early lead with two runs in the second and a couple more in the third for a 4-1 lead. The Rockies jumped on the Cardinals' starter Junior Gonzalez for another four runs and held the Redbirds offense scoreless for the win. Oscar Cotes doubled and drove in one run and Moises Castillo knocked in another run.
June 22, 2016: The Cardinals went on the road in the second game against the Rockies looking to reboot their winning streak. The Rockies, for the second straight time, plated the first run and Redbirds took the lead after with two of their own. The Cardinals committed a couple errors and handed the game to the Rockies in the final three frames. Winston Nicacio dealt with some control issues handing out five walks but did strike out four and allowed one run over four innings. William Jimenez singled twice and drove in one run and Brian Sanchez contributed and RBI.
June 23, 2016: The Cardinals faced the Tigers in a doubleheader for the next series. The Redbirds broke out of the hitting slump and plated ten runs with the pitching staff holding the Tigers to one run and three hits. Alvaro Seijas shined, striking out eight and allowing three hits, one unearned run, and one walk over six innings. Brian Sanchez hit a homer and drove in four runs, Elehuris Montero singles and hit a two-run homer, and Leandro Cedeno doubled in two runs.
June 23, 2016: The Tigers visited the Cardinals for the second game of the doubleheader and didn't get much better results. The Redbirds and Tigers exchanged single runs in the second but the Cardinals plated eight in the third for a 9-1 lead. The Tigers added three in the fifth and was shut down by the Redbirds' bullpen. Edwar Ramirez showed some promise striking out seven and Brian Pirela sat another five batters. Brian Sanchez walked, tripled, and drove in two runs.
June 24, 2016: The Cardinals hosted the Tigers for the third game of the series and brought the brooms. The Tigers scored first with a run in the second but the Redbirds plated three runs in the bottom half. The Tigers took over with six runs on the third to the Cardinals two for a 7-5 lead. The Redbirds added another five runs and the bullpen kept the Tigers to only two in the final six frames for the win. Fabian Blanco finished off the game with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings for the win. Dariel Gomez singles twice and drove in three runs, Brian Sanchez walked and hit a two-run shot, and Esequeil Delgado added two singles, one triple, and two RBIs.
June 25, 2016: The Angels visited the Cardinals for the finale game of the week and knocked around the pitching staff. The Halos scored nine runs in the first five innings and added another three to double up the Redbirds 12-6. The Cardinals threw out four different pitchers and each gave up at least one run and the defense committed three errors that didn't help. Raffy Ozuna walked twice, homered, and drove in three runs.
Who's Hot:
Brian Sanchez had his on base streak end at 11 games but connected four a hit in the last four games played. The 20-year old right-handed hitter went 4-for-20 (.200) with one triple, one home run, nine RBIs (two w/two-outs), four runs, two walks, one sac fly, and six strikeouts. He played all five games in right field and assisted in one double play. The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored, hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, AVG, and is tied for lead in triples.
Wadye Ynfante has reached base safely in all 13 games played this season. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-19 (.368) with two doubles, four RBIs, five runs, one sac fly, four strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays. He played five games in centerfield (one outfield assist) and one as pinch hitter.
Esequeil Delgado extended his on base streak to 11 games and picked up a hit in the last two played. The 18-year switch-hitter went 7-for-22 (.318) with one triple, five RBIs (two w.two-outs), four runs, six walks, two hit by pitches, two stolen bases, and five strikeouts, He played all six games at second base and assisted in two double plays. The July 3, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in walks and stolen bases.
Alvaro Seijas came through with a quality start after two poor appearances. The 17-year old right-hander opened on June 23rd and struck out a career-high eight while allowing three hits, one unearned run, and one walk over six innings for the winning decision (2-0). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 7-to-2. The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitched and strikeouts. Update: Seijas was promoted to short-season rookie-level Gulf Coast League
Brian Pirela has put together two really good relief appearances out of four this season. The 18-year old right-hander was called out of the bullpen on June 23rd and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, threw one wild pitch, and struck out a season-high five for the winning decision (1-1). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1 and let one of two inherited runners score.
Who's Not:
Leandro Cedeno has since cooled after a strong start to the season but did end the week reaching base safely in his last five games. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 5-for-24 (.208) with one double, two RBIs, three runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts. He played four games at first base (assisted in three double plays) and two behind the plate (three passed balls and threw out one of four base runners). The August 9, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in doubles and is tied in triples.
Diego Cordero only made it a couple innings in his last start, after having three solid appearances. The 18-year old left-hander started on June 24th and allowed three hits, five earned runs, four walks, one balk, and struck two out over two innings. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-0.
Junior Fernandez was thumped in his latest start after two decent games. The 19-year old right-hander started on June 21st and coughed up ten hits, five earned runs, two home runs, and struck four out over five innings for the losing decision (1-1). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-1. The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team hits allowed.
Edwar Ramirez still struggling to get a grip on his pro career, did show some potential in his latest outing. The 18-year old right-hander started on June 23rd and allowed six hits, four earned runs, one home run, one walk, hit one batter, and struck out a career-high seven over 4.2 innings. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-2. The February 11, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in earned runs and tied in runs allowed and hit batters.
Jesus Garcia lasted only five batters in his lone relief appearance this past week. The 18-year old right-hander was called on June 24th and gave up one hit, two earned runs, and two walks over two-thirds of an inning. He came in with bases loaded and all three runs scored. The May 29, 2015 free agent signing may be a little slow to get on the tracks after missing all of last season due to elbow surgery.
Notes:
Estailin Tejada has been out of action since June 4th and Andres Luna since June 9th.
Irving Wilson was promoted to short-season rookie-level Gulf Coast League June 24th. He had played in 11 games going 9-for-39 (.231) with one double, seven RBIs, six runs, nine walks, six strikeouts, .367 OBP, .256 SLG, and .624 OPS this season.
William Jimenez returned to action missing two weeks. He went 6-for-14 (.429) with three RBIs, four runs, one walk, and one strikeout.
Dariel Gomez also returned after missing the same amount of time as Jimenez. He went 3-for-11 (.273) with three RBIs, two runs, four walks, and six strikeouts.
Hector Linares was activated from the suspended list on June 23rd and played in only one game.
Julio Rodriguez has collected a hit in each of the six games he has played (8-for-27, .296).
With the international signing period coming up this weekend, the St. Louis Cardinals have been linked to 17-year old Cuban outfielder Jonatan Machado, 16-year old Venezuelan outfielder Victor Garcia, and Dominican outfielder Carlos Soler: Baseball America
