Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-11-16

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals had their winning streak snapped at five games to start the week off and only took two of six games played.  The team is 21-9 with a .700 PCT and two games ahead of the Rockies for first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 10-4 at home and 11-5 on the road.

Week In Review:

July 4, 2016: The Cardinals visited the Nationals in the first game of this report.  The Redbirds took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth and held on until the sixth as the Nats tied it up.  The Cardinals added one more in the seventh but couldn't on as the Nationals scored two more in the eighth and won.  Angel Rondon struck out seven and allowed two runs over six innings and Brian Sanchez walked and hit a two-run homer.

July 5, 2016: The Cardinals stayed out on the road and took on the Braves.  The Braves started the scoring first with one in the first inning.  The Redbirds rallied in the third for four runs.  The Braves never took back the lead as the Cardinals equaled them in run support for the remainder of the game.  Fabian Blanco closed the door tossing one and a third scoreless innings while striking out three and hold two inherited runners on base.  Brian Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the third inning.

July 6, 2016: The Braves visited the Cardinals in the second game of the two-game set.  The Redbirds and Braves were tied 1-1 until the sixth when the Cardinals tacked on two runs.  The Braves plates three in the seventh and another in the ninth and shutdown the Cardinals offense for the win.  Junior Gonzalez struck out three and allowed one run over six innings.  Dariel Gomez doubled, walked, and drove in two runs.

July 7, 2016:  The Cardinals moved on to the next series, hosting the Rockies in the first game.  Both teams exchanged three runs in the first but the Rockies took off in the later innings scoring six more times to the Cardinals only one for a 9-4 win.  Cristhian Lugo threw two scoreless relief innings and struck out four (tied career-high).  Brian Sanchez singled and hit a three-run homer.

July 8, 2016:  The Cardinals went on the road in the second against the Rockies.  The Redbirds scored first with one run in the second, Rockies put one on in the third to tie, and Cardinals took back the lead with a solo run in the fourth.  Both teams had solid pitching and the Rockies bullpen collapsed in the ninth, giving up three runs and the lead.  Noel DeJesus struck out three and allowed one run in the five-inning start.  Brian Pirela followed by striking out a career-high six over two scoreless innings.  Diomedes Del Rio triples and drove in two runs.

July 9, 2016:  The Cardinals ended this report hoping to continue their on the road magic, against the Tigers.  The Redbirds took an early lead of 3-0 heading into the fourth.  Between the fourth and sixth innings, the Tigers unloaded with eight runs over all three innings.  The Cardinals scored seven over the seventh through ninth innings but the Tigers tied it up with two in the bottom of the ninth.  Both teams put zeroes up in the tenth and the Tigers took the game keeping the Redbirds off the board in the 11th and scoring a run in the lower half.  Carlos Soto singled twice, walks, and drove in three runs and Diomedes Del Rio added two singles and three RBIs.  Wadye Ynfante singled, walked three times, and knocked in two runs.

Who's Hot:

Carlos Soto made his professional debut on July 6th and started off with a four-game hitting streak.  The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 7-for-16 (.438) with two doubles, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), one run, two walks, one sac fly, and two strikeouts.  He played three games at catcher (threw out two of five base runners and committed one fielding error) and one as designated hitter.

Brian Sanchez got back on the wagon after a tough week and extended his on base streak to 14 games and hitting streak to six.  The 20-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-26 (.308) with one double, three home runs, nine RBIs, five runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, and six strikeouts.  He played five games in right field (one outfield assist) and one as designated hitter.  The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in hits, runs scored, home runs, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, and AVG.

Dariel Gomez bounced back after struggling in the previous week and ended this report on a four-game hit streak.  The 19-year old left-handed hitter went 4-for-12 (.333) with four doubles, four RBIs (two w/two-outs), one run, three walks, and two strikeouts.  He played four games at first base, assisting in three double plays.

Noel DeJesus could be considered the ace of the staff with his fifth positive outing in six this season.  The 19-year old right-hander started on July 8th and allowed three hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck three out over five innings.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-8.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing has the best ERA and WHIP among the starting pitchers and leads the team in strikeouts.

Junior Gonzalez tossed his second consecutive quality start and four of of five for the season.  The 19-year old right-hander started on July 6th and tossed six innings while giving up two hits, one earned run, hit one batter, and struck three out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 10-to-3.

Edwar Ramirez has his second worst outing of the year during this report.  The 18-year old right-hander started on July 7th and coughed up ten hits, five earned runs, and hit one batter over three innings for the losing decision (1-1).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-3.  The February 11, 2015 free agent signing has allowed the most hits, runs, and earned runs on the team and has the worst ERA and WHIP among starting pitchers.

Jesus Garcia struggles continue as he has now allowed at least one run in each appearance this season.  The 18-year old right-hander was called on for the July 5th contest and gave up four hits, one earned run, one home run, one walk, struck one out, and picked one off over two innings for the winning decision (3-0).  He then made a second appearance on July 9th allowing four hits, five runs (four earned), and one walk over 1.2 innings.  Garcia had a ground out-to-fly pout ratio of 4-to-2 and held all three inherited runners on base.  The May 29, 2015 free agent signing has the worst ERA and WHIP on the club.

Wilman Madera has walked two or more in his last three relief appearances and gave up one or more runs in his last two.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched on July 7th giving up one hit, three earned runs, three walks, and struck one out over two-thirds of an inning.  Then on July 9th, he allowed one hit, one earned run, two walks, and struck one out over 1.2 innings for the losing decision (1-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio over 2-to-3.
