Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-1-16



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals failed to secure first place in the San Pedro Division as they only took one of the five games played during this period and have only won five of their last 15 games.  They are 29-19 with a .604 PCT and are five games back of the Rockies and two ahead of the third place Angels.  The team is 15-9 at home and 14-10 on the road.

Week In Review:

July 25, 2016:  The Cardinals opened up the week hosting the Rockies.  Both team tied were tied at one heading into the fifth and the Rockies blew the door open with six runs.  The Rockies pitching managed to shut down the Redbirds offense.  The Cardinals relievers gave up another run inn the final five innings and lost 8-1 to the Rockies.  Leandro Cedeno singled, doubled, and rove in one run.  Enrique Perez and Cristhian Lugo allowed three hits, one run, one walk, and struck four out over the last five frames.

July 26, 2016:  The Cardinals went on the road for the second game of the series against the Rockies.  The Redbirds go things going in the first with one run then added three more in the fourth.  The Rockies, who were silent in the first four innings, came to life in the fifth with one run then took the lead with four in the seventh.  The Cardinals tied it up in the eighth but the bullpen coughed up two in the bottom of the ninth for the loss.  Brian Sanchez tripled and hit a solo home run and Julio Rodriguez added a solo home run.  Edwar Ramirez struck out two and allowed one run over five innings in the start.

July 27, 2016:  In the next series, the Cardinal stayed out on the road to face the Tigers.  The Tigers took the early lead with four runs over the first and second innings, while shutting out the Redbirds in the first three frames.  The Cardinals plated a run in the fourth, sixth, and seventh but it wasn't enough as the Tigers held the lead and added another two runs in the eighth for the win.  Brian Sanchez singled twice, doubled, and drove in one run.  Francis Ventura pitched three innings of scoreless relief and struck two out.

July 28, 2016: The Cardinals welcomed in the Tigers for the second game and the offense finally came to life. The Redbirds scored first in the second then plated two in the third, five in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one more in the seventh before the Tigers mustered their only run in the ninth.  Brian Sanchez collected two singles and three RBIs; Elehuris Montero doubled, walked, and drove in two runs; and Dariel Gomez knocked in two runs.  Johan Oviedo tossed three scoreless innings for the opening and Angel Rondon followed with another four scoreless innings.

July 29, 2016:  The Angels came to town in the opening of the final series against the Cardinals.  The Halos plated five runs in the first two frames and kept the Redbirds offense almost silent the entire game.  The Cardinals scored one in the third and another in the seventh but the Angels erupted again in the final three frames with four more runs.  Brian Sanchez collected two singles and two RBIs.  Enmanuel Solano tossed three scoreless innings and struck one out.

July 30, 2016: The Cardinals finished the week on the road against the Angels.  The Redbirds offense awoke from slumber with three runs in the first two innings and another in the fourth.  The Cardinals pitching started off with four scoreless frames then the Halos opened it up with five in the fifth and six innings to take a 5-4 lead.  The Redbirds took the lead back in the eight with two runs but couldn't hold onto the game and let the Angels take the game with two runs in the ninth.  Jonathan Machado was a home run short of the cycle and drove in three runs.  Junior Gonzalez struck out five and allowed two runs over five innings in the start.

Who's Hot:

Wadye Ynfante will look to extend his eight-game hitting streak into the next week.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 10-for-21 (.476) with two doubles, one home run, two RBIs, five runs, two walks, one stolen base, and four strikeouts.  He played four games in left field (one outfield assist and assisted in one double play) and one in centerfield.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in AVG and OBP and is tied for the lead in doubles.

Brian Sanchez, like Ynfante, has an eight-game hitting streak to build on.  The 20-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-26 (.423) with one double, one triple, one home run, seven RBIs (two w/two-outs), three runs, one hit by pitch, and 11 strikeouts.  He played five games in right field and committed one fielding error.  The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in hits, runs, triples, home runs, RBIs, total bases, SLG, and OPS.

Julio Rodriguez is only three games short of Ynfante and Sanchez with a five-game hitting streak.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-16 (.375) with three double, one home run, two RBIs, three runs, one walk, and struck three out.  He played four games behind the plate and threw out four of ten base runners and committed one throwing error.

Moises Castillo is riding a four-game hitting streak into the next period.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-19 (.316) with two doubles, three RBIs, three runs, one walk, one sac fly, four strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played five games at shortstop and committed three throwing errors.  The July 14, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in errors.

Angel Rondon made his second consecutive quality appearance this week.  The 18-year old right-hander was called on for relief duty on July 28th and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, one walk, hit one batter, and struck four out for the winning decision (2-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-5.  The January 6, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in strikeouts.

Who's Not:

Carlos Soto has gone four consecutive games without a hit and only one hit in his last eight played.  The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 0-for-9 (.000) with two runs, seven walks, and two strikeouts.  He played all four games as the designate hitter.

Raffy Ozuna has not collected a hit in his last two games and only connected for three hits on his last ten played.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-8 (.000) with five strikeouts.  He played two games as the designated hitter.  The July 2, 20515 free agent signing leads the team in strikeouts.

Diego Cordero struggled in his second appearance since returning from absence,  The 18-year old left-hander pitched on July 26th and allowed four hits, four runs (three earned), one home run, one walk, and struck four out over one and two-thirds innings for the blown save (1).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0.  The July 8, 2014 free agent signing has given up five runs (four earned) and struck six out over 3.1 innings since reappearing.

Fabian Blanco has hit a speed bump with his last three relief appearances.  The 18-year old left-hander pitched on July 26th, allowing one hit, two earned runs, one home run, two walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck three out over two innings for the losing decision (3-1).  He then tossed on July 30th, giving up two hits, two runs (one earned), two walks, threw one wild pitch, one balk, and struck two out over one and two-thirds innings for the blown save (3) and losing decision (3-2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-2.  The August 6, 2014 free agent signing has allowed four hits, five runs (four earned), one home run, five walks, and struck five out over his last six innings.

Wilman Madera was thumped in his latest two appearances after going three consecutive games without giving up a run.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched on July 27th, allowing two hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck one out over one inning.  On July 30th, he pitched one inning giving up four hits, three earned runs, struck one out, and picked one runner off for the blown save (2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0.

Notes:

Andres Luna has been out of action since July 9th, Carlos Luis since July 19th, Brian Pirela since July 23rd, and Diomedes Del Rio only played in one game since July 23rd.

William Jimenez returned to action on July 28th after missing nine days.  He went 0-for-3 with one run, one walk, one stolen base, and one strikeout.

Dominican Summer League Stats:

The team is hitting .268 (3rd, 440-for-1641) with 93 doubles (1st), 26 triples (t-2nd), 28 home runs (1st), 262 RBIs (1st), 319 runs (1st), 669 total bases (1st), 247 walks (3rd), 20 stolen bases (worst), 381 strikeouts (6th worst), 12 caught stealing (best), .370 OBP (4th), .408 SLG (1st), and .778 OPS (1st).

The club has a 29-19 record with 4.11 ERA (29th), 1.41 WHIP (t-24th), one shutout, 13 holds (7th), and 14 saves.  They have allowed 419 hits (6th worst), 243 runs, 192 earned runs, 13 home runs, 172 walks, hit 49 batters, and struck 406 out (best) over 420.1 innings.

Wadye Ynfante is tied for second in AVG, fifth in OBP, ninth in SLG, and fifth in OPS.

Brian Sanchez fourth in AVG, third in runs, third in hits, tied for fourth in triples, first in home runs, first in RBIs, first in total bases, eighth in OBP, first in SLG, and first in OPS.

Leandro Cedeno is tied for seventh in total bases and third in SLG.

Esequeil Delgado is tied for first in walks.

Raffy Ozuna is third in strikeouts.

Fabian Blanco is tied for tenth in saves

Junior Gonzalez is second in hits allowed, tied for fourth in earned runs, and tied for sixth in home runs allowed.

Winston Nicacio is tied for eight in runs allowed.

Brian Pirela is tied for seventh in holds.
