Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-15-16



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals has several players step up this week and push the team to victory in five of the six games played during the week.  The team is 39-21 with a .650 PCT and are four games behind the first place Rockies.  They are 20-10 at home and 19-11 on the road.

Week In Review:

August 8, 2016: The Cardinals opened the week against the Braves for a two game series, first of the two on the road.  The Redbirds pitching handled the Braves offense holding them the just seven hits and no walks and the defense turned four double plays.  The Cardinals scored two runs in the first, two in the sixth, four in the seventh, and one in the ninth for the exclamation point.  Noel DeJesus struck out three over six scoreless innings for the win.  Fabian Blanco and Jesus Garcia combined to finish the game with two strikeouts over three scoreless innings.  Moises Castillo singles twice, tripled, walked, and drove in two runs.  Brian Sanchez and Carlos Luis each knocked in two runs.

August 9, 2016: The Braves visited the Cardinals in the second game of the series.  The Redbirds pitching for the second game in a row shut down the Braves' offense, holding them to six hits and no walks.  The Cardinals scored two in the first inning, one in the third, and three in the seventh.  Diego Cordero struck out four over four scoreless innings and and Francis Ventura followed with five strikeouts over four scoreless.  Julio Rodriguez singles twice and hit a two-run homer.

August 10, 2016: The Cardinals stayed home and hosted the first-place Rockies.  The Rockies scored first with one in the first inning but the Redbirds answered back and topped them with two in the bottom half.  The Rockies took the lead with three runs in the third.  The Cardinals tied it up with two in the seventh and then took the win by plating a run in the ninth.  Wilfredo Pereira and Enrique Perez combined to pitch the final five innings, allowing three hits, no runs, and struck four out.  Julio Rodriguez singled twice, homered, and drove in three runs.

August 11, 2016: The Rockies welcomed in the Cardinals in the second game of the series.  The Rockies kept the Redbirds off the board for the first five frames while scoring one run.  The Cardinals scored three over the final four innings and claimed the contest.  Johan Oviedo struck out three and allowed one run over four innings.  Junior Gonzalez followed with five scoreless innings and striking out four.  Elehuris Montero singled, doubled, and drove in three runs.

August 12, 2016: In the final series of the week, the Cardinals traveled to take on the Tigers.  Both teams exchanged single runs in the first and the Redbirds took the lead with another run in the second.  The Cardinals pitching shutdown the Tigers for the next five innings and tacked on another run in the sixth.  The Tigers managed to get one more across the plate in the seventh but it was not enough as the Redbirds held on for the victory.  Edwar Ramirez allowed one run and struck six out over five innings for the win.  Dariel Gomez tripled , walked twice, and drove in one run.

August 13, 2016: The Cardinals looking to sweep the week schedule welcomed in the Tigers for the finale of the series.  The Redbirds got things started with a run in the third but the Tigers answered back in the following inning.  The Cardinals then took the lead in the fifth with two and Tigers slapped on five in the seventh.  The Redbirds pushed one across in the bottom half of the seventh and Tigers plated two more on in the ninth to double the score.  Noel DeJesus struck out seven and allowed one run over five innings.  Julio Rodriguez collected three singles, one double, and three RBIs.

Who's Hot:

Wadye Ynfante extended his on-base streak to eight games and has collected a hit in six consecutive games.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-16 (.500) with one double, one RBI, five runs, three walks, one stolen base, and three strikeouts.  He played two games in centerfield and two in left.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored, OBP, and AVG.

Julio Rodriguez has a four-game hitting streak to carry over.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-19 (.579) with one double, two home runs, eight RBIs (three w/two-outs), five runs, one hit by pitch, and one strikeout.  He played four games behind the plate (one passed ball and threw out one runner) and one between first base and catcher (assisted in one double play).

Leandro Cedeno currently has the longest on-base streak on the team at 19 games and that includes a six-game hitting streak.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 4-for-11 (.364) with one double, one RBI, one sac fly, two strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played two games at first base and one at catcher (allowed one stolen base).  The August 9, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in doubles.

Moises Castillo had his hitting streak snapped at 13 games in the second to last contest of the week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-21 (.429) with two doubles, four RBIs, eight runs, one sacrifice, three strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played five games at shortstop (assisted in two double plays, committed one throwing and fielding error) and one shared at second base and shortstop (one throwing error and assisted in one double play).  The July 14, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in errors.

Elehuris Montero will look to extended his five-game hitting streak in the next week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-24 (.375) with two doubled, four RBIs (three w/two-outs), one run, one sacrifice, and four strikeouts.  He played five games at third base and assisted in one double play.

Noel DeJesus has put together three consecutive solid starts.  The 19-year old right-hander made his first start of the week on August 8th and tossed six scoreless innings allowing six hits and striking out three for the win (5-2).  The second came on August 13th, as he gave up six hits, one earned run, and struck out a career-high seven.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 12-to-2.  The July 2, 2015 free agent leads the team winning decisions, innings pitched, strikeouts, and leads the starting rotation in ERA and WHIP.

Who's Not:

Jonathan Machado has only connected for one hit in his last three game played.  The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 1-for-10 (.100) with one run, one stolen base, three strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played two games in centerfield.

Esequeil Delgado will look to end his three-game hitless streak.  The 18-year old switch-hitter went 1-for-12 (.083) with two runs, one walk, one stolen base, and three strikeouts.  He played three games at second base.  The July 3, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in walks and stolen bases.

Raffy Ozuna ended the week on a three-game hitless streak and has only picked up three hits in his last 16 games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-13 (.077) with one walk and five strikeouts.  He played two games as designated hitter and two at shortstop.  The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in strikeouts.

Diomedes Del Rio has only one hit in his last six games played.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 1-for-8 (.125) with two runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, one stoen base, and four strikeouts.  He played three games in centerfield (one fielding error, one outfield assist, and assisted in one double play) and one in left field.  The July 2, 2016 free agent signing has the worst AVG, OBP, and OPS on the team.

Notes:

Andres Luna has been out of action since July 9th, Angel Rondon since August 3rd, and Wilman Madera since August 6th.

Carlos Luis returned to action after missing almost two weeks.  He went 4-for-11 (.364) with four RBIs, two runs, one sac fly, two strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.

Brian Pirela returned after missing three weeks with and unknown injury.  He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed no hits, three earned runs, and three walks on August 13th.

Dominican Summer League Stats:

The team is hitting .272 (2nd, 562-for-2066) with 119 doubles (1st), 31 triples (3rd), 32 home runs (1st), 327 RBIs (1st), 839 total bases (1st), 398 runs (1st), 306 walks (3rd), 32 stolen bases (last), 474 strikeouts (6th worst), 14 caught stealing (best), .372 OBP (2nd), .406 SLG (1st), and .778 OPS (1st).

The club is 39-21 with a 3.81 ERA (25th), 1.34 WHIP (t-16th), three shutouts, 17 holds (t-4th), and 17 saves.  They have allowed 513 hits (5th worst), 286 runs, 225 earned runs, 14 home runs, 199 walks (t-8th best), hit 51 batters, and struck 516 out (best) over 531 innings.

Wadye Ynfante is fourth in AVG, third in runs scored, third in OBP, and tied for fourth in OPS.

Brian Sanchez is tied for eight in AVG, tied for sixth in runs scored, third in hits, tied for seventh in triples, first in home runs, first in RBIs, first in total bases, tied for sixth in strikeouts, tied for tenth in OBP, first in SLG, and first in OPS.

Esequeil Delgado is tied for second in doubles.

Raffy Ozuna is tied for second in strikeouts.

Leandro Cedeno is fourth in SLG.

Fabian Blanco is tied for ninth in saves

Junior Gonzalez is tied for fourth in hits allowed, tied for eighth in runs allowed, third in earned runs, and tied for fourth in home runs allowed.

Winston Nicacio is tied for eighth in runs allowed and ninth in walks allowed.

Brian Pirela is tied for sixth in holds.
