Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-24-15

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals saved their best for the last week as they won five of their final six games of the season.  The team finished with a 34-38 record, .472 PCT, and 16 games out of first place.  They had a 16-20 record at home, 18-18 on the road, and ended in fourth place in the Boca Chica North Division.

Week In Review:

The Cardinals opened their final week with a two-game set against the Astros Orange, with the first contest at home.  Oneiver Diaz was strong tossing five scoreless innings while striking out five and allowing five hits and one walk.  The Redbirds held a lead of 2-0 on a Sanel Rosendo RBI ground out and Wadye Ynfante RBI triple.  The Astros tied it up in the top half of the sixth but the Cardinals snatched the lead back in the bottom half as they loaded up the bases and Dariel Gomez, Edwin Figuera, and Ynfante each plated runs.  Edwar Ramirez coughed up the lead but pitched two scoreless innings and Estailin Tejada followed with one and two-thirds and the Redbirds won 5-2.

The Cardinals visited the Astros Orange in the second game of the set.  Both teams exchanged zeroes in the first three frames and after that, the Redbirds went to work at the plate.  The Cardinals tacked on four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings as the Astros plated one.  Then both teams switched off a run in the seventh.  Starlin Balbuena lead the way for the offense with three single, one double, and three RBIs and Brian Sanchez and Esequeil Delgado each contributed two RBIs apiece. Will Changarotty went five innings, in his latest start, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and struck four out.  Cristhian Lugo pitched two scoreless final innings for the Cardinals as they won 9-3.

The Cardinals stayed out on the road to take on the Nationals in the next two-game series.  Both teams showed strong pitching to open as they each scored one run in the third and put zeroes on the scoreboard in the first, second, and fourth innings.  Juan Alvarez continued on striking out five and allowing five hits, one earned run, and one walk over five innings.  Enrique Perez followed with two scoreless innings, striking out five of seven batters faced.  The Cardinals offense took advantage of the Nats mishaps scoring a total of eight runs with only two being earned.  The Redbirds also picked up eight walks and collected six hits.  Wadye Ynfante singled, walked twice, and drove in one run.  The Nationals finally attacked in the ninth scoring three runs but came up short 8-3.

The Cardinals hosted the Nationals in the second game of the series.  Junior Gonzalez pitched six innings allowing four hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck eight out..  Angel Estevez and Fabian Blanco followed with a combined three scoreless innings.  The Redbirds offense sparked in the fourth with one run, then two in each of the six and seventh innings.  Elehuris Montero lead the way with one single, two walks, and two RBIs.  The Cardinals went on to win the fourth straight 5-1.

The Cardinals visited the Rangers One in the final regular season series of the year.  Franyel Casadilla opened the game, for the Redbirds, and pitched a shut out heading into the fifth.  Esequeil Delgado, Dariel Gomez, and Edwin Figuera each drove in a run to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead at mid-fifth inning.  With two errors by the Cardinals, the Rangers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  The Rangers' bullpen tossed up zeroes on the scoreboard for the remaining four innings and plated four in the seventh and end the Redbirds winning streak with a score of 6-3.

The Cardinals welcomed in the Rangers One for the final regular season game of the 2015 season.  Oneiver Diaz tossed five scoreless innings to start the game and then gave up one in the sixth but struck out five before leaving.  Starlin Balbuena singled, doubled, and drove in one and Andres Luna contributed with one RBI to give the Redbirds the early lead.  Enrique Perez and Noel DeJesus closed the door on the Rangers, tossing three scoreless innings and the Cardinals ended the year with a 3-1 victory.
