Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-13-15



The Dominican Summer League Cardinals split their six-game schedule for the week opening with a two-game losing streak and ending on a win.  The team is 17-20 with a .459 PCT and are ten games out of first place in a two-way tie for third place in the Boca Chica North Division.  They are 9-10 at home and 8-10 on the road.


Week In Review:

The Cardinals opened the week with the second game of a two-game set against the first-place Rangers, on the road.  The Rangers knocks around the Redbirds' pitching for the first four innings, taking an early lead of 6-1.  The Cardinals' hitting came alive in the sixth and made a strong comeback.  Esequeil Delgado had two singles and two RBIs, Carlos Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the eighth, and Elehuris Montero singles three times, doubled, and drove in one.  However, the Rangers bats scored five in the seventh and the Cardinals lost 11-10.

The Cardinals came home to host the second-place Mariners Two in a two-game series.  The M's pitching was almost untouchable allowing just five hits, one run, and struck ten out.  Each one of the Redbirds' pitchers coughed up three or more runs, with the assistance of errors and wild pitches.  Wadye Ynfante collected the only extra base hit, with a double, and only team walk.  Elehuris Montero plated the only run in the sixth as the Cardinals fell 10-1 to the Mariners Two.

The Cardinals, looking to end a two-game losing streak, went on the rod to face the Mariners Two.  Juan Alvarez pitched a stellar game going seven innings allowing only five hits, no runs, struck two out, and induced ten ground outs.  Diego Cordero followed with two more scoreless innings.  The Redbirds' bats struck in the second and third with Carlos Rodriguez hitting two solo home runs, Wadye Ynfante hit a two-run homer, and Dariel Gomez knocking in two games.  The Cardinals picked up there first shut out of the season with a 7-0 victory over the Mariners Two.

The Angels visited the Cardinals for the start of a two-game set.  The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs to the Angels' one by the end of the third.  The Angels came roaring back tacking on another four runs and knocking Junior Gonzalez out in the fifth.  The Angels would give the game away in the late innings as the Redbirds scored another five runs and Fabian Blanco and Estailin Tejada pitched the final four and two-thirds innings without giving up a run.  Luis Flores triples three times and drove in four runs with Wadye Ynfante adding four RBIs on a home run and single as the Cardinals beat the Angels 8-5.

The Cardinals went on the road in the second game against the Angels.  Both teams went scoreless in the first three frames.  The Angels took the lead in the third 3-1.  They added on another three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth.  Brian Sanchez lead the offense with one RBI in the third and another in the eighth.  Elehuris Montero and Carlos Rodriguez also contributed RBIs but the Angels doubled up the Cardinals 8-4.

The Cardinals hosted the Astros Orange in the final contest of he week.  Both teams received strong pitching performances from their starters.  Oneiver Diaz struck out six and gave up four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings.  The Redbirds were the first to strike as Sanel Rosendo doubled in Dennis Ortega.  Esequeil Delgado knocked in Rosendo and another run in the following inning.  The Astros Orange put three on the board in the eighth and Brian Sanchez answered back unloading the bases in the bottom half for a three-run double.  The Cardinals held on to win 7-3 over the Astros Orange.


Who's Hot:

Wadye Ynfante has a 23-game on base streak and has collected a hit in his past 20 consecutive games.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-25 (.440) with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs, six runs, four walks, one sac fly, one strikeout, two caught stealing (one pickoff), and grounded into one double play.  He played four games in center field and two in left (one outfield assist).  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in doubles, caught stealing, OBP, SLG, AVG, and OPS.

Carlos Rodriguez collected three multi-hit games in the last week and has a four-game hit streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-26 (.308) with one double, three home runs, six RBIs, six runs, one walk, eight strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played four games at first base (assisted in one double play) and two as designated hitter.  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing leads the team in hits and runs scored.

Luis Flores will look to extend his hitting streak which is at six games.  The 18-year old switch-hitter went 7-for-12 (.583) with one double, four triples, two RBIs, six runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.  He played three games at second base and assisted in one double play.  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing leads the team in triples.

Juan Alvarez threw one of the best starts for the team during this period, Oneiver Diaz the other.  The 18-year old right-hander started on July 8th, tossing seven scoreless innings and allowing five hits, hit one batter, and struck two out for the winning decision (2-2).  He had a ground out-to-flu out ratio of 10-to-4).  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing has one of the best ERA's and WHIP's among the starting rotation.

Estailin Tejada cleaned up and pitched two scoreless relief appearances.  The 20-year old right-hander pitched on July 9th, allowing one hit, no runs, and struck four out over two innings for the save (1).  He then tossed one and a third hitless/scoreless on July 11th, hitting one batter and striking out two for the winning decision (1-0).  The 2015 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-2 and held one inherited runner on base.


Who's Not:

Hector Linares connected for one hit during this period and ended on a two-game hitless streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-11 (.091) with four strikeouts.  He played two games as designated hitter and one at third base (assisted in one double play).

Andres Luna had a five-game hitless streak snapped to begin the week and went on a three-game hitless streak mid-week.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-14 (.071) with two RBIs, one walk, one hit by pitch, one stolen base, five strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  He played three games in center field and one in left (committed one fielding error).

Franyel Casadilla struggled in his latest start after two great appearances.  The 18-year old right-hander tossed on July 10th allowing eight hits, three earned runs, two walks, and striking out two over four innings for the losing decision (2-3).  He had a ground out-to-flu out ratio of 3-to-3.  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing leads the team in strikeouts.

Junior Gonzalez still continues to get punished in the starting rotation (7.59 ERA) and has allowed at least one of more runs in each of his seven appearances this season.  The 18-year old right-hander coughed up 12 hits, five earned runs, one walk, threw two wild pitches, and struck three out over four and a third innings on July 9th.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-2.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in hits allowed, runs allowed, and earned runs.

Edwar Ramirez showed some spark in his first appearance of the week and reverted back to old in his second.  The 17-year old right-hander came in for relief on July 6th and pitched three innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, one home run, and threw one wild pitch.  Then on July 10th, he gave up two hits, three earned runs, hit one batter, and walked two.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-6 and let all four inherited runners score.


Notes:

Oscar Cotes played in only one game on July 9th.

Frendy Gavin, who hasn't pitched since June 27th, has been dealing with shoulder soreness and hopes to return this coming week.

Dennis Ortega has a 14-game on base streak which includes a six-game hit streak.  Sanel Rosendo has a ten-game on base streak which includes a four-game hit streak.  Esequeil Delgado has a nine-game on base streak.  Brian Sanchez has a seven-game on base streak.


Newly Signed Debuts:

Noel DeJesus pitched in relief on July 6th, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and hit one batter over one inning.

Anthony Trompiz pitched in relief on July 6th, allowing no hits or runs, and striking out one over one inning.

Brian Pirela pitched in relief on July 7th, allowing three hits, three earned runs, hit one batter, and striking out one over one inning.


Dominican Summer League Stats:

The team is hitting .253 (t-15th)(326-for-1288) with 69 doubles (t-3rd), 16 triples, 18 home runs (t-4th), 190 RBIs (3rd), 481 total bases (6th), 202 runs, 127 walks, 22 stolen bases (worst), 291 strikeouts, 16 caught stealing (t-best), .331 OBP (26th), .373 SLG (t-5th), and .704 OPS (14th).

The club is 17-20 with a 3.96 ERA (t-22nd), 1.44 WHIP (t-21st), one complete game, one shut out, five holds, and five saves.  The have allowed 329 hits (10th worst), 194 runs, 145 earned runs, 11 home runs, 144 walks, hit 41 batters (6th worst), and struck 259 out over 329.1 innings.

Wadye Ynfante is fifth in AVG, first in SLG, and fifth in OPS.

Brian Sanchez is fifth in home runs, first in RBIs, seventh in total bases, and third in SLG.

Carlos Rodriguez is tied for sixth in home runs.

Junior Gonzalez is tied for third in most hits allowed and tied for eighth in most earned runs.

Franyel Casadilla is tied for seventh in most hits allowed.

Enrique Perez is tied for third in most walks allowed.
