Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-15-15

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals extended their winning streak, from the previous week, to three games and lost three of the last four games to round out this period.  The club has a 6-7 record, .462 PCT, in a four-way tie for fourth place, and three games out of first in the Boca Chica South Division.

Week In Review:

The Cardinals began the week finishing off a two-game series against the Astros, on the road for this contest.  David Oca, starting for the Redbirds, was again fantastic striking out six and allowing six hits and one run over five innings.  The Astros also received some great pitching from their starter, who struck out seven over four.  The Cardinals erupted in the fifth and didn't let up until the end of the game, taking advantage of nine errors committed by the Orange.  Irving Wilson singles and hit a three-run homer and Elehuris Montero doubled and drove in another three as the Cardinals put away the Astros 13-1.

The Cardinals stayed out on the road to face the Nationals in the first of two.  Juan Alvarez and Junior Gonzalez tag-teamed to shut down the Nats.  Both combined for five hits, one run, and five strikeouts.  Brian Sanchez got the Redbirds on the scoreboard with a triple that drove in Wadye Ynfante and Elehuris Montero.  Sanchez added his third RBI of the game in the seventh.  Ynfante and Leandro Cedeno each plated a run as Cardinals rolled a 6-1 victory over the Nationals and third straight win.

The Cardinals had a slight flashback to opening day in the third game of the week, against the Nationals.  The Nats' pitching staff struck out a total of 14 and allowed only five base runners.  Dariel Gomez ended his hitless streak at five games and broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning.  Franyel Casadilla turned out a different started compared to his 2015 debut, tossing six scoreless innings and striking out six.  Redbirds' errors contributed to Nationals' runs and they took the game 7-0.

The Cardinals headed out on the road to face the Rangers One in the next game of the week.  Oneiver Diaz pitched himself into the sixth inning.  Diaz walked more than he struck out but only allowed two runs.  Brian Sanchez lead the offensive run for the Redbirds with Dennis Ortega chipping in.  Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the the fourth to help the Cardinals to a 6-1 lead.  Sanchez added his fourth RBI of the game in the ninth.  Ortega reached base safely four times with three singles and one walk, and added an RBI also.  The Cardinals got back to winning ways with an 8-3 victory over the Rangers One club.

The Cardinals offense struggled to plate runs in the second game of the two-game series against Rangers One.  Elehuris Montero collected three singles in five at-bats and Dylan Melendez singles and doubled, but nobody ran across the plate.  Estarlin Arias was shaky on the hill giving up eight hits and one run and Frendy Gavin saved him from three runners scoring.  The bullpen was hit hard in the final three innings as the Rangers One shutout the Redbirds, for the third time in 2015, 6-0.

The Cardinals finished the week on the road against the Mariners Two.  David Oca dominated striking out six over five scoreless innings to start the game.  The M's starter went a little further blanking the Redbirds for six innings and the following reliever extended the zeros another two frames.  The Cardinals tied it up at one in the ninth as Elehuris Montero tripled and Carlos Rodriguez drove him in another a back-to-back three-bagger.  Both team's bullpens kept the scoreboard clear another four frames with Will Changarotty going three and Diego Cordero added one scoreless.  Carlos Rodriguez came through again in the 14th scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the 14th but the Redbirds couldn't hold on blowing the lead and game in the bottom half giving up the contest 3-2.
