Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-27-15

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals were out played this period, losing their first five games of the week and pulling out the last.  The club has a 20-28 record with .417 PCT and are 14 games out of first place and have fallen to fourth place in the Boca Chica North Division.  The team is 10-14 at both home and on the road.

Week In Review:

The Cardinals began the second half of the season on the road against the Mariners Two.  The Redbirds hitting was held at bay for mostly the entire game with the M's pitching posting zeroes up from first through eighth innings.  Ronald Medrano kept the Cardinals in the game only allowing two runs over five innings and Will Changarotty followed with three scoreless frames.  With the bases loaded, the Mariners walked in a run then Dennis Ortega grounded into a force out at first to tie the game and send it into extras.  An error in the tenth gave the contest to the Mariners Two with a 3-2 win over the Redbirds.

The second game between the Mariners Two and Cardinals was held at the Redbirds complex.  The Cardinals jumped out in front early scoring four, two on a double by Brian Sanchez, to the M's one after two innings.  Juan Alvarez struggled after giving up three more runs in the next two frames and handing the lead over to the Mariners Two 5-4.  Sanel Rosendo hit a solo home run in the fifth and Edwar Ramirez pitching three strong innings giving up one run.  The M's sent the game into extras with a run in the ninth and blew the door open with three more in the tenth to win 9-6.

The Cardinals hosted the Angels in the third game of the week.  Both teams had each other's starting pitchers out after three frames and errors contributed to much of the scoring for the game.  The Mariners Two went through three Redbirds' pitchers in the first six innings and were held scoreless by the newly signed international free agent three.  Dariel Gomez drove in three runs on three hits and Irving Wilson singled twice, tripled, and knocked in one run.  The Angels had jumped out too far ahead and slipped past the Cardinals by one run with a 7-6 score.

The Cardinals went on the road for the second game of the series against the Angels, which ended in a third extra inning contest.  Franyel Casadilla had another strong showing going six innings and allowing only one run.  Brian Sanchez tripled and hit a solo home run to put the Redbirds out in front by three runs.  The Angels tapped the Cardinals relievers for three in the eighth and sent the game into extras.  Both team exchanged scoreless innings from ninth to eleventh, with the Cardinals turning a unique triple play, and then the Angels pulled off the win in the 12th for a 5-4 score.

The Cardinals looking to end their four-game slide hosted the Astros Orange, to which they have play well against.  The Redbirds took advantage of some pitching mishaps along with RBIs by Brian Sanchez and Luis Flores to take the lead 3-1, after six innings.  Oneiver Diaz has a solid outing going six innings and giving up one run on six hits.  The Astros came back to tie it up in the eight and send the Cardinals to a 4-3 extra innings loss, and third for this period.

The Cardinals, riding a five-game losing streak, went on the road to face the Astros Orange in the second game of the series.  Ronald Medrano started and tossed one of his best performances of the season, striking out a career-high seven and allowing four hits and one unearned run over five innings.  The Redbirds were a little slow to get the offense going but started unloading in the fifth with a wild pitch score.  Sanel Rosendo hit a solo home run in the sixth and drove in a second run in the seventh.  The Cardinals put six runs on the board between fifth and seventh innings while Enrique Perez and Noel DeJesus combined for four scoreless for the 6-1 victory.

Who's Hot:

Dariel Gomez took advantage of playing time with Carlos Rodriguez on the mend.  The 19-year old left-handed hitter went 7-for-17 (.412) with two doubles, one triple, four RBIs, three runs, one walk, one sac fly, five strikeouts, one caught stealing, and grounded into one double play.  He played five games at first base, assisting in five double plays and one triple play.

Sanel Rosendo had his 18-game on base and 12-game hitting streak snapped, but still drove in the most runs.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-26 (.346) with one triple, three home runs, six RBIs (one w/two-outs), five runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.  He played three games in right field (one outfield assist and assisted in one double play), two in left field (one throwing error), and one as designated hitter.

Oneiver Diaz continued his flip flop from good to bad to good starts.  The 18-year old right-handed started on July 24th and tossed six innings allowing six hits, one unearned run, hit one batter, and struck one out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 12-to-2.  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitched and hits allowed.

Franyel Casadilla is starting to find some consistency and filling the void left by the promotions of David Oca and Estarlin Arias.  The 18-year old right-hander made his turn in the rotation on July 23rd, giving up five hits, one earned run, one walk, and striking out four.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 8-to-4.  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing leads the team in strikeouts with 36 and has only walked nine over 49 innings.

Ronald Medrano doubled up on quality starts this last week.  The 19-year old right-hander made his first on July 20th allowing six hits, two earned runs, one walk, hit one batter, and struck three out.  Then he came up again on July 25h, giving up four hits, one unearned run, one walk, and striking out a career-high seven for the winning decision (3-1).  The Nicaraguan-born hurler had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 12-to-4.  The August 8, 2012 free agent signing leads the starting rotation in wins, ERA, and WHIP.

Who's Not:

Elehuris Montero managed to snap his three-game hitless streak and collect at least a hit in last two played for this period.  The 16-year old right-handed hitter went 3-for-21 (.143) with one run, three walks, and three strikeouts.  He played four games at third base (two fielding errors, one throwing error, and assisted in one double play) and one as designated hitter.  The September 5, 2014 free agent signing is second on the team in errors committed.

Brian Sanchez is on a three-game hitless streak and has struck out at least once in last ten consecutive contests.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-19 (.106) with one double, three RBIs, one run, one walk, one sac fly, two stolen bases, eight strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays.  He played three games in right field and one in left.  The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in home runs, RBIs, total bases, and strikeouts.

Hector Linares has only picked six hits in his last ten played.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-15 (.133) with one run, three walks, and five strikeouts.  He played three games as designated hitter and one at third base.

Junior Gonzalez had a short leash in his latest start.  The 18-year old right-handed started on July 22nd and was pulled after giving up three hits, four runs (two earned), three walks, one hit batter, and two strikeouts over three innings.  He has a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-1.  The February 10, 2014 free agent signing has the worst ERA and WHIP among the starting rotation and has allowed the most runs and earned runs.

Fabian Blanco gave up to or more runs in his last two relief appearances.  The 17-year old left-hander was called on July 21st and allowed two hits, three earned runs, and two walks over one inning for the losing decision (2-1).  Then on July 24th, he gave up two hits, two earned runs, and threw two wild pitches for the hold (1).  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-3.  The 2015 free agent signing has been the go-to reliever for the club but has seen his ERA skyrocket from 3.86, in mid-June, to 6.84.

Notes:

Oscar Cotes returned to action after having been out since July 9th.  He went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts on July 22nd.

Dylan Melendez was out of action from July 16-25 and Leandro Cedeno from July 14-23rd.  Potential reason could be the abundance of catchers available.

Frendy Gavin is still dealing with shoulder soreness and hasn't pitched since June 27th.

Carlos Rodriguez went 0-for-5 (.000) in two games played this past week,  The 2015 All-Star was hit by a pitch, in the sixth inning of the July 21st game, and hasn't returned.
