Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-3-15

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals extended their winning streak to two games to begin the week, but lost the next four of five games and ended this period on a two-game losing streak.  The team has a 22-32 record with a .407 PCT and 16 games out of first place.  They are 10-17 at home, 12-15 on the road, and just three games shy of being eliminated from postseason play.

Week In Review:

The Cardinals opened this report on the road against the Nationals for the beginning of a two-game series.  Juan Alvarez delivered his second best start of his career, going seven innings and allowing eight hits, one earned run, and striking out three.  The Redbirds tied it up in the fourth on a Leandro Cedeno single and took the lead in the sixth on a Sanel Rosendo solo home run making it 2-1.  The Cardinals continued in the seventh as Luis Flores drove in a run on a triple and then scored on an error.  Cedeno drove in his second RBI in the eighth and the Redbirds added another on a bases loaded walk.  Anthony Trompiz pitched the final two frames and gave up one run but the Cardinals went on to their second straight game at a score of 6-2.

The Cardinal hosted the Nationals in the second game of the series and errors played a major role.  Junior Gonzalez had another decent performance going for six innings and allowing five hits, three unearned runs, one walk, and striking out four.  The Redbirds hitting didn't show up to the game only collecting four singles, but did walk six times and Dariel Gomez knocked in the only run.  The Nats hammered on Edwar Ramirez for four runs in the seventh while Fabian Blanco and Brian Pirela combined for two shutout innings to close out the 7-1 loss by the Cardinals.

The Cardinals stuck around home and welcomed in the Rangers One for a two-game set.  The Rangers pitching was on fire and even though they gave up seven hits, did not allow a run.  Franyel Casadilla followed up past dominate starts with another, going seven innings and giving up only two hits, no runs, and striking out six.  Andres Luna, Brian Sanchez, and Oscar Cotes each doubled but didn't score and Estailin Tejada coughed up the winning and only run to the Rangers in the ninth.

The Cardinals went out on the road to face the Rangers One in the second game of the series.  The Redbirds jumped out in front early as Wadye Ynfante drove in Starlin Balbuena in the first inning and Luis Flores tripled in Sanel Rosendo and Dariel Gomez in the second for a 3-0 lead.  The Cardinals received another strong starting performance by Oneiver Diaz, who give up seven hits, one run, one walk, and struck three out over five innings.  Will Changarotty followed with four shutout innings to close out the game as the Cardinals went on to win 3-1.

The final series of the report put the Cardinals against the Mariners, with the Redbirds on the road first.  The M's pitching shut down the Cardinals, keeping them at seven hits, one run, and striking out ten batters.  Ronald Medrano gave the Redbirds another quality start tossing six innings and allowing eight hits, two runs, and one strikeout.  The Mariners tapped into the Cardinals bullpen for five runs over the final two frames and Oscar Cotes drove in the only run in the 7-1 final.

The Cardinals hosted the Mariners Two in the series finale and again struggled in the field.  The Mariners jumped out in front with two runs in the second and third innings and added two more in the fifth.  The Redbirds plated four in the sixth and both exchanged a run in the seventh as the score sat at 7-5.  Errors played early on in the beginning of the game and the Cardinals bullpen couldn't hold the lead.  Hector Linares collects three singles and one RBI, Irving Wilson doubled, tripled, and drove in one run, and Dariel Gomez added a single, triple, and one RBI to help lead the offense.  Brian Pirela was the only Redbird pitcher that went untouched for one scoreless inning as the Mariners Two won 8-7.

Who's Hot:

Dariel Gomez extended his on base streak to eight games which included a three-game hit streak.  The 19-year old left-handed hitter went 5-for-14 (.357) with one triple, three RBIs, two runs, two walks, one sac fly, and four strikeouts.  He played four games at first base and assisted in seven double plays.

Sanel Rosendo has a seven-game hit streak to add onto in the next week.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-25 (.280) with three doubles, one home run, two two-out RBIs, three runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, seven strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played four games in right field (two outfield assists and one fielding error) and two in left field.  The February 11, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in walks.

Franyel Casadilla has made five quality starts in his last six appearances.  The 18-year old right-handed started on July 29th, allowing two hits, no runs, and striking out six (tied season-high) over seven innings (tied season-high).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 7-to-6.  The November 5, 2013 free agent leads the team in strikeout with 42 and has only walked nine over 56 innings and has the best WHIP among the starting rotation.

Oneiver Diaz has made three quality starts in his last four outings.  The 18-year old right-handed started on July 30th, allowing seven hits, one earned run, one walk, threw two wild pitches, and struck three out over five innings for the winning decision (2-3).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-2.  The November 5, 2013 free agent signing has the only complete game on the club.

Will Changarotty is pitching much better since returning to the bullpen with his third consecutive great appearance.  The 19-year old right-hander was called for relief on July 30th and tossed four shutout innings only giving up six hits and striking out one for the save (2).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-3.  The July 24, 2012 free agent signing leads the team in saves and hasn't hit a batter in the 32.2 innings logged this season.

Who's Not:

Brian Sanchez managed to snap his 14 consecutive game with one or more strikeouts but did not collect a hit in his last two games.  The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 3-for-21 (.143) with two doubles, two runs, two walks (one intentional), one stolen base, seven strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played three games in left field (one outfield assist and one fielding error) and two in right field (one fielding error).  The November 11, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in home runs, RBIs, total bases, strikeouts, and tied in doubles.

Esequeil Delgado extended his hitless streak to three games.  The 17-year old switch-hitter went 0-for-6 (.000) with one walk, one hit by pitch, and three strikeouts.  He played two games at second base, committing one throwing error.

Edwar Ramirez has allowed an earned run (18) for almost every inning logged (18.2) this season.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched one inning of relief on July 28th, giving up four hits, four earned runs, and one walk.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-1.

Estailin Tejada had a couple rocky appearances this week, picking up a two losing decisions.  The 20-year old right-hander was called on for relief on July 29th and pitched two innings allowing one hit, one earned run, hit one batter, and struck one out for the losing decision (2-2).  He made his second appearance on August 1, giving up two hits, two earned runs, one home run, and one walk for the blown save (2) and losing decision (2-3).  The 2015 free agent signing had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-1.  Tejada has the best ERA wen it comes to the arms coming out of the bullpen.

Cristhian Lugo couldn't make it through an inning of work during this period.  The 18-year old reliever faced four batters on July 31st, giving up one hit, three earned runs, two walks, hit one batter, and threw one wild pitch, without recording an out.  He also let both inherited runners score.
