Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-17-15

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals had a strong previous week but collapsed during this report, winning two of the six games played and ultimately will finish the season under .500.  The club is 29-37 with a .439 and are 18 games out of first place, in a two-way tie with the Nationals for third place in the Boca Chica South Division.  They are 13-20 at home and 16-17 on the road.

Week In Review:

The Cardinals opened the week, on the road, against the Rangers One.  The pitching lead the way with Franyel Casadilla and Enrique Perez combining to hold the Rangers to four hits, no runs, one walk, and eleven strikeouts.  The bats were also swinging with Wadye Ynfante, Sanel Rosendo, Elehuris Montero, and Dennis Ortega each collecting two or more hits.  Rosendo, Montero, Leandro Cedeno, and Edwin Figuera drove in four of the Cardinals' six runs.

The Cardinals hosted the Rangers One in the second game of the series and the places changed from the previous contest.  Oneiver Diaz struggled giving up four runs over five innings and the bullpen did no better allowing and another four runs over the final four frames.  Starlin Balbuena reached base twice with a single and the Cardinals only extra base hit, a double, and Dariel Gomez singled and walked twice.  The Rangers One shutout the Redbirds 8-0.

The Cardinals stayed home in the next game and welcomed in the Mariners Two.  Will Changarotty, getting another shot at the starting rotation, struck out four and allowed five hits and one unearned run over five innings.  The Redbirds offense was slow getting going as Leandro Cedeno hit a solo home run in the fifth and eight innings and Esequeil Delgado drove in three runs in the sixth.  Edwar Ramirez threw three scoreless innings and Estailin Tejada made it through one as the Cardinals went on to win 6-1.

The Cardinals left for the road in the second game against the Mariners Two.  Both teams exchanged scoreless innings for the first three frames.  Dariel Gomez plated one in the fourth and the M's answered back with four in the bottom half.  The two clubs then tossed zeros up on the scoreboard for the next four innings.  Starlin Balbuena singled in one run in the top of the ninth and a couple batters later, Irving Wilson tripled in two.  The Cardinals bullpen couldn't keep the game at a tie and coughed up the losing run in the bottom with a 5-4 ending score.

The Cardinal hosted the Angels in the next game.  Junior Gonzalez was decent in his start allowing seven hits, three runs, and struck four out over five innings.  Dennis Ortega singled, doubled, and drove in one run and Dylan Melendez tripled and knocked in one run to lead the offense.  The Redbirds' bullpen would melt down after Gonzalez's exit, handing away the game and seven runs as the Angels doubled up the Cardinals 10-5.

The Cardinals ended this report, on the road in the second game of the series, against the Angels.  Franyel Casadilla made his second start of the week and went six innings allowing three hits, one earned run, and struck out eight.  Wadye Ynfante scored the first run of the game as Leandro Cedeno reached on an error and Ynfante drove the second run in during the second inning.  Cedeno drove in a run in the fifth to put the Redbirds up 3-1.  The Cardinal bullpen couldn't hold the lead and the offense shut off in the final four frames as the Anges went on to win 4-3.
