In the first month of the season, the Dominican Summer
League Cardinals’ rotation saw two of their starters get promoted in Brian
Pirela and Angel Rondon after a couple appearances. Francis Ventura made the most starts and
tossed the most innings. Diego Cordero
hurled the most innings per start and had a really good ERA and WHIP. Jose Moreno had the best ERA among the
starters with three or more openings.
Allinson Benitez struggled but lead all starters in strikeouts.

Moreno lead the way in starts and innings pitched in the
second month of the season. Cordero,
Ventura, and Wilfredo Pereira all show some struggles in July. Pereira did however strike out the most
batters with Cordero not far behind.
Enmanuel Solano was inserted into the rotation and took off in his new
role, after spending all of the 2016 season in the bullpen. Dionis Zamora and Hector Soto received spot
starts and Benitez was bumped to the pen.

Cordero and Pereira rebounded in the final month of the
season. Cordero struck out the most and
had the best ERA and WHIP in August.
Solano and Ventura showed steady numbers while Moreno improved compared
to July. Zamora continued to do double
duty as he started and relieved before the end of the season. Oneiver Diaz received one start before he was
promoted.

Looking at the five main starting pitchers for the 2017
season, you can say this wasn’t a bad group of hurlers at all. All put up some really good numbers and if
the team had a solid bullpen, we probably would see this team making a title
run. Moreno and Solano saw their ERA
stay under 3.00 and Cordero was just hovering.
Solano also had his WHIP under 1.00.
Cordero however pitched the most innings, most innings per start, struck
out the most, and earned the most wins among the starting rotation.
My personal selection for the 2017 Dominican Summer League
Cardinals Starting Pitcher of the Year is Diego Codero.
