Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-28-17 (Season Finale)



In the final week of the 2017 season, the Dominican Summer League Cardinals took three of seven games with the final a winner.  The team had a 30-40 record with a .429 PCT and were 18.5 games out of first place for sixth in the South Division.  They were 13-19 defending home territory and 17-21 on the road.

Week In Review:

August 21, 2017: The Cardinals opened the final week with a two game set against the Twins, with the first being at home.  The Redbirds were first on the board with two runs in the first three frames.  Diego Cordero kept the Twins from scoring in the first three innings, then gave up a couple in the next two.  The Cardinals held a 4-2 lead heading into the sixth, when the Twins tied it up and added two more to take over.  Each team exchanged runs over the final three frames as the Twins took the contest.  Francisco Hernandez singled, doubled, and drove in two runs and Victor Garcia added two singles, one walk, and two RBIs.

August 22, 2017:  The Cardinals headed out on the road in the second game of the series vs. the Twins.  Francis Ventura coughed up two runs in the first but calmed for four scoreless following.  The Redbird tied it up with two runs in the fifth.  Roy Garcia and Nelson Prada combined for four scoreless frames to end the game.  The Cardinals offense rolled across four more runs in the eighth and ninth for the victory.  Yowelfy Rosario doubled and drove in two runs and Carlos Soler tripled and knocked in one run.

August 23, 2017: The Cardinals were scheduled for a doubleheader against the Angels but the weather played a part in cancelling the second contest.  With Jose Moreno defending the home field mound, he tossed six scoreless and struck out six.  The Redbirds held the early lead with one run in the first and second, and plated another two in the sixth.  The Angels punched through with two in the eighth, but Freddy DeJesus put the exclamation point on with a grand slam in the ninth as the Cardinals took the game.

August 24, 2017 (game one of doubleheader): The Cardinals and Angels faced off in the second round of doubleheaders.  The Redbirds pitching struggled to contain the Halos and gave up six runs in the first four frames.  The Cardinals offense was silent until the fifth when the plated one and only scored two more in the seventh.  Leonardo Taveras pitched three and a third scoreless innings to end the game, but the Redbirds could not offensively get back in.  Carlos Soler and Pablo Gomez each contributed a RBI.

August 24, 2017 (game two of doubleheader): The Cardinals visited the Twins in the final game of the four-game set.  The Redbirds offense was once again silent and only connected for two hits (one extra base) and one run.  The Angels scored twice in the four and once in the fifth to easily claim the contest.

August 25, 2017: The Cardinals hosted the Nationals for the first game of the final series.  The Nats opened up on the Redbirds pitchers and blasted them for ten runs and 18 hits.  The Cardinals did plate one run in the second and three in the sixth with Victor Garcia leading the charge.  Anthony Trompiz was the only pitcher out of four that went unscored upon as he pitched and inning and a half.

August 26, 2017: The Cardinals looking to end their three-game losing streak and finish the season on a positive note visited the Nationals.  Diego Cordero for his second go-around this week, struck out four and allowed one run over six innings.  Roy Garcia and Nelson Prada combined to finish off the game with three scoreless frames.  Franklin Soto singled, doubled, and drove in one run while Carlos Soler racked up the total bases with two singles, one double, and one triple in the win.

Who's Hot:

Ivan Herrera had his on-base streak snapped at 23 games but did pick up three multi-hit games.  The 17-year old Panamanian right-handed hitter went 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles, one RBI, two runs, and two strikeouts.  He played four games at catcher and threw out two of four base runners, picked one runner off, and had one passed ball.  The June 2, 2017 free agent signing lead the team in doubles, OBP, AVG, and OBP.

Raffy Ozuna ended the season on a 14-game on-base streak.  The 18-year old Dominican right-handed hitter went 5-for-13 (.385) with one double, one triple, four runs, three walks, and four strikeouts.  He played three games at shortstop (assisted in two double plays and committed one fielding error) and one as designated hitter.  The June 3, 2016 free agent signing lead the team in runs scored, RBIs, total bases, walks, and strikeouts.

Victor Garcia completed the season on two-game hit streak and collects three multi-hit games in his final six played.  The 17-year old Venezuelan right-handed hitter went 5-for-15 (.333) with one double, three RBIs (one w/two-outs), two runs, one walk, three strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays.  He played three games in right field (committed one throwing error) and two as designated hitter.  The July 2, 2016 free agent signing went 14-for-39 (.359) with three doubles, seven RBIs, six runs, and seven strikeouts in the month of August.

Diomedes Del Rio collects two multi-hit games in the final week.  The 19-year old Venezuelan right-handed hitter went 5-for-18 (.278) with one triple, four RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, one walk, and three strikeouts.  He played two games in right field, two in left field (one outfield assist), one in center, and one as a pinch runner.

Freddy DeJesus had his on-base streak snapped at 17 games but still drove in the most runs during the last week.  The 17-year old Dominican right-handed hitter went 5-for-24 (.204) with one home run, six RBIs, three runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, one sac fly, and eight strikeouts.  He played seven games at first base and assisted in six double plays and committed one throwing error.  The September 6, 2016 free agent signing lead the team in home runs.

Diego Cordero tossed two strong starts to finish off the DSL season.  The 19-year old Dominican left-hander started on August 21st and allowed six hits, two earned runs, one walk, hit one batter, and struck five out over five innings.  His second came on August 26th, when he went six innings and gave up two hits, one earned run, two walks, hit one batter, struck four out, and picked one runner off  for the winning decision (4-4).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 15-to-3.  The July 8, 2014 free agent signing lead all starters in ERA, innings pitched, hits allowed, and strikeouts.

Jose Moreno bounced back from his shortest outing of the season throwing his best start of the year.  The 17-year old Venezuelan right-hander started on August 23rd and tossed six scoreless innings and allowed two hits, one walk, and struck six out for the winning decision (1-3).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-6.

Roy Garcia began the season on a high note and ended it positive, in between was rough.  The 17-year old Dominican right-hander was called from the bullpen on August 22nd and pitched two innings allowing two hits, no runs, and struck three out for the winning decision (2-4).  He then made a second appearance on August 26th where he, again, went two innings and gave up one hit, no runs, and struck one out.  His ground out-to-fly out ratio was 5-to-1.  The September 6, 2016 free agent signing struck out 12 and walked five over 11.1 innings in August.

Leonardo Taveras had three scoreless outing in his last three of four games.  The 18-year old Dominican right-hander itched on August 24th and tossed three and a third scoreless frames while giving up three hits, one walk, and struck two out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-3 and held two inherited runners on base.  The September 12, 2016 free agent signing had a strong August as he allowed nine hits, two earned runs, one home run, one walk, hit one batter, and struck five out over 8.1 innings.

Nelson Prada had three consecutive appearances without giving up a run and only allowed a run in one of his last six games.  The 17-year old Venezuelan left-hander pitched in relief on August 22nd and allowed no hits or runs, one walk, and struck three out over two innings for the save (1).  Then on August 26th, he pitched one inning and gave up one hit, no runs, and struck one out.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-1.  The August 30, 2016 free agent signing also had a strong August as he pitched seven innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, three walks, and struck out seven.

Notes:

Cristhian Longa had been out of action since July 24th, William Jimenez (hit in head by ball) and Larimel Soriano since August 3rd, and Allinson Benitez since August 9th.

Dominican Summer League Stats:

The club batted .258 (6th, 598-for-2317) with 113 doubles (4th), 27 triples, 25 home runs (6th), 283 RBIs (8th), 840 total bases (7th), 349 runs, 257 walks, 46 stolen bases (3rd worst), 592 strikeouts (t-5h worst), 40 caught stealing (t-9th best), .344 OBP (12th), .363 SLG (5th), and .706 OPS (6th).

The team had a 30-40 record with 4.50 ERA (37th), 1.51 WHIP (38th), three shutouts (t-6th worst), 12 holds, and 14 saves. They allowed 617 hits (3rd worst), 372 runs (10th worst), 298 earned runs (5th worst), 13 home runs (t-10th best), 282 walks, hit 54 batters, and struck out 485 over 596.1 innings.

Ivan Herrera was tied for sixth in AVG and tenth in OBP

Carlos Soler was tied for sixth in triples.

Freddy DeJesus was tied for sixth in home runs.

Raffy Ozuna was tied for tenth in walks and second in strikeouts.

Wilfredo Pereira was tied for third in losses.

Diego Cordero was seventh in hits allowed.
