Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-14-17
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals has their losing streak extended to three games at the beginning of the week then the team split the remaining games for a 2-3 record. The club is 25-34 with .424 PCT, and 18 games out of first place in the South Division. The team is 12-16 defending home and 13-18 on the road and have been eliminated from postseason play.
Week In Review:
August 7, 2017: The Cardinals opened this week up with a series against the Angels, first game on the road. Jose Moreno only gave up one run over the first five innings for the Redbirds. The Cardinal scored their first run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and followed with another on a RBI triple by Raffy Ozuna in the sixth. The offense went silent for the Redbirds after and the Angels tacked on two more runs in the eighth to take the contest.
August 8, 2017: The Cardinals were scheduled to host the Angels for a doubleheader, but weather prevented. Make games are scheduled for August 23rd and 24th.
August 9, 2017: The Cardinals welcomed in the Nationals for the first game of a two-game set. The Redbirds were the first on the scoreboard with two in the first. The Nats took the lead in the third until the Cardinals took it back in the bottom half. The Nationals went on to tack six more runs on over the next four frames and the Redbirds plated three more in the final two and came up short. Raffy Ozuna led the way with one double, one triple, and three RBIs and Freddy DeJesus added two singles and two RBIs. Hector Soto was the one bright spot on in the pitching core, striking out two of three batters faced in the ninth.
August 10, 2017: The Cardinals visited the Nationals in the second game of the series. Diego Cordero had another strong performance striking out five and allowing one run over five innings. Wilfred Pereira, removed from the rotation, logged three innings with only one run. The Redbirds offense was a little slow to get going but pushed five runs across the plate from the fourth through eighth innings which included Freddy DeJesus hitting a two-run home run in the sixth. Jesus Cruz closed out the contest striking out two for the save.
August 11, 2017: The Cardinals began a two-game set against the Rockies, with the first contest om the road. Francis Ventura tossed four scoreless innings to open. The Redbirds scored in each of the first three innings, which included a RBI double by Victor Garcia, and gave the a 3-0 lead. The Rockies attacked the Cardinals bullpen and plated four runs over the final four frames for the win.
August 12, 2017: The Cardinals hosted the Rockies in the final game of the week. Dionis Zamora made a second spot started and struck out five over three scoreless innings. The Redbirds plated one run in the third but coughed up the lead on three runs in the fourth. The Cardinals added another five runs to the Rockies two and Jesus Cruz picked up the win on a scoreless ninth. Raffy Ozuna hit a solo home run in the seventh and Carlos Soler and Luis Montano each doubled and drove in one run.

Victor Garcia has a six-game on base streak and has picked up a hit and scored a run in three straight games. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-12 (.500) with one double, three RBIs (two w/two-outs), one run, one walk, one hit by pitch, and grounded into one double play. He played two games as designated hitter and one in right field.
Carlos Soler has collects a hit and scored in four consecutive games. The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 9-for-21 (.429) with three doubles, two RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, three walks, three stolen bases, four strikeouts, and one caught stealing. He played five games in center field and had one outfield assist. Since returning in August, the July 2, 2016 free agent signing has gone 15-for-37 (.405) with four doubles, one triple, six RBIs, .476 OBP, and .568 SLG.
Raffy Ozuna has a six-game on base streak and two-game hitting streak to extend. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-20 (.400) with one double, two triples, one home run, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, three walks, one stolen base, and nine strikeouts. He played four games at shortstop (assisted in one double play, one pickoff error, and two fielding errors) and one as designated hitter. The July 2, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in runs, walks, strikeouts, and errors.
Ivan Herrera will look to extend his 19-game on-base streak, which includes a ten-game hitting streak. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-16 (.375) with two two-out RBIs, four runs, two walks, one hit by pitch, and four strikeouts. He played four games behind the plate and committed pickoff error and threw out five of nine base runners. The July 7, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in AVG, OBP, OPS, and doubles.
Freddy DeJesus currently has a ten-game on base streak to work on. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-20 (.300) with one double, one home run, four RBIs, two runs, two hit by pitches, one sac fly, and six strikeouts.He played five games at first base and assisted in five double plays. The September 6, 2016 free agent signing leads the team in home runs.
Diego Cordero threw his second consecutive quality start. The 19-year old left-hander started on August 10th and went five innings allowing four hits, one earned run, and struck five out for the winning decision (3-4). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-4. The July 8, 2014 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitched, hits allowed, runs allowed, and strikeouts.
Francis Ventura threw his first scoreless outing of the season. The 18-year old right-hander started on August 11th and tossed four scoreless inning allowing three hits, three walks, hit one batter, and struck one out. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-3. The August 3, 2015 free agent signing leads the team in starts.
Jose Moreno threw his third consecutive quality start for the club but is still looking for his first win. The 16-year old right-hander pitched five innings and gave up three hits, one earned run, two walks, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch, and struck three out on August 7th. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-tot-4. Since reaching five innings in his past three starts, the February 3, 2017 free agent signing has gone 16 innings and allowed 12 hits, three earned runs, one home run, six walks, and struck 11 out.
Dionis Zamora continued his move into a starting role for the team. The 21-year old right-hander started on August 12th and went three innings allowing four hits, no runs, two walks, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch, and struck out a career-high five. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-for-4. The June 2, 2017 free agent signing has made two spot starts this season for a total of six innings, six hits, one earned run, three walks, one hit batter, and eight strikeouts.
Jesus Cruz picked up a win and a save in his three appearances this past week. The 22-year old right-hander made his first on August 7th as he struck out one batter after a base runner was thrown out at third base. Then on August 10th, he tossed one scoreless inning and allowed one hit and struck two out for the save (1). One August 12th, he was called on and pitched one hitless/scoreless inning, walking one and striking out another for the winning decision (3-0). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-1 and held two inherited runners on base.
Notes:
Cristhian Longa has been out of action since July 24th, Diomedes Del Rio since August 2nd, and William Jimenez and Larimel Soriano since August 3rd. Pablo Gomez and Erik Pena played in only two games and Joyser Garcia in one.
Alexander Samuel has a 11-game on-base streak and Luis Montano is at eight games.
Hector Soto has not allowed a run in four consecutive appearances, spanning five and two-thirds innings.

The team is batting .254 (9th, 498-for-1958) with 93 doubles (5th), 18 triples, 23 home runs (t-4th), 236 RBIs (10th), 696 total bases (7th), 290 runs, 227 walks, 43 stolen bases (3rd worst), 522 strikeouts (2nd worst), 33 caught stealing (t-10th best), .344 OBP (t-12th), .355 SLG (t-6th), and .699 OPS (7th).
The club is 25-34 with a 4.48 ERA (37th), 1.50 WHIP (37th), three shutouts (t-10th worst), 11 holds, and 11 saves. They have allowed 519 hits (2nd worst), 311 runs, 253 earned runs (5th worst), 11 home runs, 242 walks, hit 46 batters, and struck 414 out over 508.1 innings.
