Cardinals Lose Chris Ellis In Rule 5 Draft, But Nab John Fasola & Alberto Triunfel

The type of pitcher Chris Ellis could be for the Kansas City Royals in the coming season is what the Cardinals found in a low-risk pick from the Rangers' system — without all the tricky Rule 5 requirements.

Cardinals Add Ryan Helsley, Genesis Cabrera, Protecting Them From Rule 5 Draft

The decisions the Cardinals ended up making before Tuesday’s deadline to set their roster had less to do with the roles a handful of prospects could play for them in the coming season than it did assuring they wouldn’t be in those roles with another team.

Post-Dispatch

Cardinals Purchased The Contracts Of Genesis Cabrera, Ryan Helsley, Lane Thomas, & Ramon Urias, & Designated Conner Greene & Derian Gonzalez For Assignments

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have selected the contracts of left-hander pitcher Genesis Cabrera (pronounced hen-e-sis), right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley, outfielder Lane Thomas and infielder Ramón Urías from Memphis (AAA). The team also announced that they have designated for assignment right-handed pitchers Conner Greene and Derian Gonzalez. Today's transactions currently place the team's 40-man Major League roster at 40 players.
St. Louis Official Site

The annual deadline to protect prospects from the Rule 5 Draft came with some significant roster rejiggering for the Cardinals, who backpedaled on two players they chose to protect last year, safeguarded two ascending talents and hinted at the chance of two others playing significant 2018 roles at the big league level.
St. Louis Official Site

To make room on the 40-man roster for four talents the Cardinals did not want to lose in the Rule 5 draft, the Cardinals first had to risk losing two minor-league pitchers who they protected a year ago.

The St. Louis Cardinals made six roster moves, adding four players to the 40-man major league roster and designating two players for assignment in advance of Tuesday’s reserve list deadline.
Fox Sports Midwest

The Cardinals have added four players to their 40-man roster ahead of Tuesday's deadline to protect players from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft. The Cardinals selected the contracts of RHP Ryan Helsley, LHP Genesis Cabrera, OF Lane Thomas and INF Ramon Urias, ensuring they couldn't be scooped up by another team in next month's draft.

With Lefty Relief Issues, Why Is Tommy Layne Still In Memphis?

It has been an extremely active season with the Cardinals 40-man roster. By my count 10 players are currently on the 40-man that were not on Opening Day. But of all the players added to the roster during the course of this season, left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne is not one of them.
