The Dominican Summer League Cardinals’ bullpen saw some
major struggles in the first month of the season but there were also some
positives. Hector Soto was a solid
innings eater and effective at the same time as he had minimal damage in the
walks and runs department. Dionis Zamora
was one of the strikeout kings and converted three of five saves for a
team-high. Hector Mendoza showed some
potential in his short stay, before promotion, as he struck out ten over seven
innings. Oniever Diaz, in his rehab from
surgery, made his return and transitioned into the bullpen. Cristoffer Zapata didn’t allow any runs over
five and two-thirds but walked five to raise his WHIP. Roy Garcia had trouble with his control as he
gave up plenty of hits and walks, which came back to bite him. Wilman Madera did not show any improvement
from the previous season. Newcomers
Enmanuel Solano, and Leonadro Taveras, and Rodard Avelino all has their own
troubles.

In the second month of the season, we see Zamora improve
drastically as he didn’t give up any runs and struck out 15 over 11.2 innings
and converted two save opportunities.
Garcia and Anthony Trompiz showed improvements from a rough start in
the first month. Jesus Cruz joined the
team after a short stint in the Mexican League and was lights out with 12
strikeouts over nine innings. Geronimo,
Taveras, and Zapata struggled with their control which turned into many
runs. Nelson Prada saw more innings as
he returned from injury and a bonus.

In the final month, Soto and Zamora were plugged into the
rotation on a couple occasions. Garcia
and Madera kept getting the innings even though their seasons did not turn out
very well. Taveras, Geronimo, Trompiz,
and Prada were the go-to arms out of the bullpen in August.

Looking at the relievers who logged over 20 innings during
the 2017 season, we see the numbers stick out.
Garcia, Trompiz, and Madera were used quite a bit in the season but not
very effective. Zamora and Soto stick
out as the most effective relievers on the team. Zamora led the hurlers in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts,
and saves. Soto and Madera did look good
in the walks department.
My personal pick for the 2017 Dominican Summer League
reliever of the year goes to Dionis Zamora.
