How Cardinals Hit The Jackpot With Kyle Lohse

Forced into action out of desperation, the Cardinals went looking for a starting pitcher three weeks before the opening of the 2008 season and, in a stroke of good luck, found someone who would become the staff ace.

Why Cardinals Took A Chance On Jeff Weaver

To many, Jeff Weaver looked like a washed-up pitcher when he was with the 2006 Angels. To the Cardinals, Weaver looked like the answer to a need.

How Mike Matheny Helped Lure Matt Morris To Giants

In a quest to bolster their starting rotation for the 2006 season, the Cardinals pursued A.J. Burnett and Javier Vazquez. Only after both efforts failed did the Cardinals turn to one of their own, Matt Morris. Too late. Mike Matheny had helped woo Morris to the Giants.

Counting Down To Opening Night: 13

Ah, Monday, Monday … Rarely anyone's favorite day, although it will be a good Monday three weeks from now, with the Cardinals home opener at Busch Stadium. But that's jumping ahead.

This Series Is For The 'Birds

This weekend the Cardinals make a rare appearance at Camden Yards to face the host Baltimore Orioles. The Cardinals have never played a World Series here. Neither of these modern clubs has any postseason clashes with each other to highlight. The Cardinals cannot count a remarkable moment in their history against the Orioles, outside of maybe a scorcher at Busch II when Sidney Ponson started against them in a throwback uni.

Add Miguel Batista To The Long List Of Midseason Cuts

Another Dave Duncan reclamation project ended Wednesday when the Cardinals released veteran Miguel Batista. The 40-year-old formerly notorious in St. Louis for scrapping with Tino Martinez played a perhaps greater-than-expected role in the team’s bullpen until his release, getting the most work of any Cardinal reliever (137 batters faced).

While A Worthwhile Notion, Don't Expect MLB DUI Policy Anytime Soon

Right off the top, let’s get something out of the way: there’s no good excuse for drinking and driving. To add, just because you’re a professional athlete does not make you smart. If anything, the actions by several players earning millions by drinking and driving shows that they’re really exceptionally stupid, irresponsible, and disrespectful. If you want to get loaded, great.

No Reason To Give Up On Cardinals

With the untimely demise of ace Adam Wainwright, the Cardinals obviously face a more difficult test in 2011. The Cardinals can replace Wainwright in the rotation but can't replicate his value.

Round Two: What Does Success Look Like For Kyle Lohse?

QUESTION: The Jake Westbrook signing would appear to set the Cardinals rotation for next season – the assumption here being that Kyle Lohse will fill the No. 5 spot. If healthy, what would a successful season for Lohse look like next year?

Bernie Bytes 6-25-10

THE CARDINALS FAIL TO SWEEP TORONTO: Adam Wainwright had a rough night (it happens to the best) and Toronto's starting pitcher was outstanding. I get that. But still, I'm of the opinion that this team -- unlike some of the better Tony La Russa STL teams of the past -- doesn't have the consistency of focus and concentration that we're accustomed to seeing.

Matt Holliday Is Finding His Swing

The improvement has been more quiet than thunderous, but Matt Holliday is starting to get things rolling with the bat. Going into the weekend series with Milwaukee, Holliday was batting .352 with an onbase percentage of .452 and a .511 slugging percentage in 104 plate appearances since May 7.
