How Cardinals Hit The Jackpot With Kyle Lohse

Forced into action out of desperation, the Cardinals went looking for a starting pitcher three weeks before the opening of the 2008 season and, in a stroke of good luck, found someone who would become the staff ace.

Mitch Harris Serves His Country, The Aids Cardinals

Mitch Harris was 29 years old when he threw his first pitch in a major league game. It was two weeks ago in Milwaukee, and he was stepping into an emergency. The St. Louis Cardinals had just lost their best pitcher, Adam Wainwright, to an Achilles’ injury that would end his season.

Matt Morris & Dmitri Young Dismissed From Hall Of Fame Ballot

While the BBWAA screening committee was keeping up with the Joneses — Jacque and Todd, to be precised — it left a bunch of superior players off Tuesday’s Hall of Fame ballot reveal.

What Would Adam Wainwright Get On The Open Market

John Mozeliak is a liar. Either that, or he has a sharp sense of humor. According to SI’s Jon Heyman, Mozeliak “hasn’t thought about” whether he’ll pick up Adam Wainwright‘s two-year, $21 million option. Bull. While he does have other things on his mind, including the strength of the 2011 Cardinals and Albert Pujols‘s impending free agency, the future of Adam Wainwright concerns him greatly. The only way his statement makes sense is if he meant that he “hasn’t thought about it” as a play on the term no-brainer. Because, really, the decision of whether to exercise Wainwright’s options takes little thought.

Chris Carpenter's Walk Stinginess

A couple of days ago, I wrote here about Chris Carpenter’s historic strikeout-to-walk ratio. As Carp prepares to take the mound at Dodger Stadium on Monday night, I thought (with the help of Tom Orf) that I would delve a bit deeper into the bases on balls component of the St. Louis Cardinals star’s ongoing success.

Follow-Up Appointment With The Disabled List

I have been getting several requests on where a certain player/team stands in the overall standings. I put together these tables of the top and bottom teams sending players to the DL and the players most often on the DL. I promise this will be the last of these long list and the team cards are coming soon.

Inside Tommy John Surgery

Five years ago, Tom Gorman wrote the following piece on the wonder that is Tommy John surgery. Frank Jobe's fix is one of few things that truly changed the game of baseball, and should be remembered alongside the advent of night games, the live ball, and maybe even Jackie Robinson. For the anniversary, Baseball Prospectus was lucky enough to gain an historic interview—the first recorded interview with both Dr. Jobe and Tommy John. While Jobe and John have appeared together, there are no publicly available recordings.

Pounding The Payment: Top Remaining Veteran Free Agents

As Major League Baseball continues its love affair with players so young they don't even need a Red Bull to get up for a game, a corresponding fraternity of veterans is feeling unloved, unwanted and -- let's be frank -- unemployed.

Viva El Birdos: Cardinals Still Have Options Available As Starters

they still have options --- kyle lohse and a bunch of de facto DFAs like josh fogg, jeff weaver, and odalis perez, guys who not even the most pitching-starved teams wanted. any takers? if there's a silver lining here --- and it's a big one, in my opinion --- it's that anthony reyes stands a good chance of being in the rotation when the season opens. make the most of your chance, a-rey.

Cardinals Looking For Pitching

The Cardinals head southeast to Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday with six starting pitchers under contract or under team control for 2008 -- and searching for at least one more. When it comes to starting pitching, quantity is not enough. A contending Major League team requires quality, ideally in bulk.
