Jack Flaherty Vs. Walker Buehler Could Define The 2020's

Sandy Koufax vs. Bob Gibson. Tom Seaver vs. Steve Carlton. Roger Clemens vs. Pedro Martinez. Stretching all the way back to the turn of the 20th century, when Christy Mathewson squared off against Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown, few things in baseball are as exciting as a duel between two premier aces.

Here's The All-Time Best MVP At Each Position

Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played in one distinct era, Albert Pujols and Mike Trout in another. Ruth never faced Aroldis Chapman’s 101 mph heat. Gehrig never got a crack at Pedro Martinez’s changeup. We love baseball’s timelessness, but so much has changed over the last 125 years.

Historical Trade Rumors: How Expos Missed Out On Albert Pujols

When the 1994 MLB season was suspended in August because of a labor dispute, the Montreal Expos had an MLB-best 74-40 record. Considering that the team employed Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill, Jeff Fassero, Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Cliff Floyd and Marquis Grissom, that shouldn't be especially surprising. The 1994 season, of course, never resumed and Felipe Alou's squad never got a chance to win the first World Series title in franchise history.

Jacob DeGrom's Quest For Third Straight Cy Begins

At the All-Star Game last summer in Cleveland, Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez approached Jacob deGrom with a piece of advice. deGrom, Martinez noticed, seemed more frustrated than usual on the mound. He advised the younger pitcher to calm down, relax, have some fun out there.

Adam Wainwright Adds To His Postseason Legend

In a postseason already filled with great pitching performances, Adam Wainwright’s gem on Sunday afternoon was likely one of the most unexpected. He held the Braves scoreless over seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just six baserunners while striking out eight. If Carlos Martínez had been able to hold onto the slim margin he was handed in the ninth, the headline would have certainly featured the 38-year-old’s gutsy outing. But this latest start was just one more milestone in a career filled with postseason heroics.

Gerrit Cole Breaks Astros' Strikeout Record, Ties An MLB Mark

Forty years ago, J.R. Richard was one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball, striking out batters at a rate that few have before or since. He fanned an Astros-record 313 in 1979 -- his final full season in the big leagues -- and finished third in National League Cy Young Award voting.

Gerrit Cole In Rare Air With 300-K Season

The pathway to 300 strikeouts started during the spring of 2018 for Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole. Houston, coming off a World Series win, had traded for Cole a few weeks before Spring Training started, and it didn’t take Cole long to bend the ears of Cy Young Award-winning teammates Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel.

Justin Verlander was just about perfect. Close enough to flirt with something special. Close enough to sense it was possible. This is what the Astros have come to expect from him.

We Don't Fully Appreciate Max Scherzer

Two of the greatest pitchers anyone alive has ever seen are Greg Maddux and Pedro Martínez. While they both won every team and individual honor that baseball can bestow, I can’t help but feel a little bit sorry for them. As transcendent as they were in the 90s, they picked the worst possible times to peak.
