Better Than You Remember: Terry Pendleton

While we’re waiting for baseball to come back, we are making do. So once a week, inspired by the late Deadspin’s “Let’s Remember Some Guys” series, we will take a look at one player in baseball history, why he was great, why he mattered and why we should hang on to him. Send me your suggestions at will.leitch@mlb.com.

One Guy You Forgot Was Ever On Your Favorite Team

You remember them, just not some of the teams they played for. There are numerous players throughout baseball history who we remember for their prime years, and we usually associate them with one specific team. But in many cases, those stars finished their careers or spent some other part of their time in the Majors with another club, one that we may have forgotten. So here's a look at some players who fall into that category for each club.

Ten Players You Forgot Were Cardinals

A recent article by MLB.com's Will Leitch highlighting 10 former Yankees who you may not remember as former Yankees got us thinking about what such a list might look like for other baseball franchises.

Ben Johnson Played A Sneaky, Important Role In Albert Pujols Legend

Within that 2000 season that hinted at the arrival of a generational talent in the Cardinals organization and ended with a dramatic flourish at Class AAA Memphis, there was a wrinkle in Albert Pujols’ advance through the minors.

The Machine, The Memphis Mafia, & The Outfield That Was

There was a time. A time not so long ago. The present was bright and the future seemed even brighter. AAA was pumping out prospects like AB rolling bottles off the line before Labor Day weekend. One by one, each as perfect as the one prior. The memories are clear as a crisp fall day in the Gateway. This is the story of those times. The days the Machine, the Memphis Mafia, and the outfield that was.

Why Mets Told Vince Coleman To Get Out, Stay Out

A reckless, senseless act by Vince Coleman blew up in his face, putting him at risk for a jail sentence and casting him into baseball limbo.

Albert Pujols' Age Shouldn't Affect Legendary Legacy

When he drives in 68 more runs, Pujols will have 3,000 hits, 2,000 runs batted in, and 600+ home runs with a .300 career batting average. It would just be as sweet if he was 46 years old. I don't care.

Albert Pujols' Main Focus As He Nears 3K Hits? Winning

Above the center-field bleachers stands a billboard bearing a photo of him mid-swing, alongside a career hit total that is progressively inching toward another illustrious round number. Every time he adds to the sum at a home game, Angel Stadium employees get to work rearranging the placards to display the updated total in real time. When the Angels return to Orange County to host the Yankees on Friday night, the billboard will read 2,994.

Albert Pujols On Verge Of Hitting Milestone

Albert Pujols has been gone seven years now, but as he closes in on 3,000 hits, a plateau he should reach in the next week, it is proper to offer some perspective on the former Cardinals star’s career.

Phillip Wellman's Life Comes Full Circle With Double-A San Antonio

In what amounted to barely three minutes, Phillip Wellman cemented himself in baseball lore. He's the first to admit it wasn't his finest moment, but the baseball lifer has turned that moment of notoriety into a positive. It's become a life lesson he falls back on, not only for himself but for the hundreds of players he's coached in the decade since he became an Internet sensation.

Cardinals Interested In Todd Frazier, Josh Donaldson The Perfect Fit; Jhonny Peralta Out Of Shape

What the Cardinals really could use is a power-hitting third baseman who could hit third or fourth. There have been some Todd Frazier rumors, but Josh Donaldson is really the perfect fit – if there’s any way the Jays would even consider trading him. The Cardinals don’t have a true 3 or 4 hitter, and in fact, their top two home run hitters are their Nos. 1 and 2 hitters in the lineup – Matt Carpenter and Dexter Fowler (who now has tied last year’s total with 13). For what it’s worth, GM John Mozeliak always had good dealings with Mark Shapiro when he was with the Indians (but as stipulated, it’s a long shot).

Albert Pujols Continuing To Shape His Legacy

Albert Pujols had played just three games above Class A when he reported to Spring Training in 2001. He was the 402nd player taken in the 1999 Draft, and declined to sign until the Cardinals bumped his bonus up to $60,000.

Bullpen Implodes/Jonathan Broxton's Days Could Be Numbered

To paraphrase Harry Dunn in regards to the Cardinals, Just when I thought you couldn’t POSSIBLY get any worse, you go and play a game like that…and TOTALLY REDEEM–wait, never mind. No redemption to be found here. The St. Louis Cardinals bullpen outdid their own futility on Monday night in Washington, D.C.. Those in the Twitter-verse probably saw this, and Dan McLaughlin mentioned it late in the broadcast – for those that stuck around – with last night’s performance, the bullpen ERA has balloon to a hefty 8.86 on the season. Oh my.
