Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-2-09: Alberto Castillo & Randy Flores Called Up To MLB; Edgar Gonzalez & Sean Danielson Activated; Joe Nelson DFA'd

Alberto Castillo (Orioles):
The Orioles use the first day of September to expand their roster and flesh out some of the weaker elements of their team. Baltimore dipped down to Triple-A Norfolk to add reserve outfielder Jeff Fiorentino and relievers Matt Albers, Dennis Sarfate and Alberto Castillo for the final month of the season.
Orioles Official Site

Felipe Lopez (Brewers):
Felipe Lopez was named the Brewers' player of the month for August and Trevor Hoffman won pitcher of the month honors. Lopez batted a team-best .325 and also led the way with 20 runs scored, 37 hits and 11 doubles. Hoffman converted all six of his save chances with a 1.64 ERA in 11 appearances.

Kevin Mulvey (Diamondbacks):
The D-backs claimed Kevin Mulvey off waivers from the Twins' organization and will send cash considerations to Minnesota for the right-hander. He was expected to arrive at Dodger Stadium after game time. In a separate but related move, the D-backs announced they will receive cash considerations from the Twins, who claimed D-backs right-hander Jon Rauch on waivers on Aug. 28.
Diamondbacks Official Site

Edgar Gonzalez (Padres):
The Padres added two players to their roster before Tuesday's game. Infielder Edgar Gonzalez was reinstated from the disabled list and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo was recalled from Triple-A Portland. The Padres' roster is now at 27. The Padres will use three catchers the rest of the season, giving manager Bud Black some in-game flexibility.

Cardinals Happily Serve As Red Sox Dumping Ground

Listening to St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak discussing the club’s acquisition of future Hall of Famer John Smoltz (pictured) Wednesday afternoon made me think about the recent success of the Cardinals in restoring the luster to Red Sox castoffs.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-13-09: Josh Phelps Signs Deal; Michel Hernandez & Chris Duncan Outrighted; Sidney Ponson Released; Rick Eckstein Suspended

Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
So Dave Allen over at FanGraphs recently picked up on something I’d noticed back in May, which is that Jamie Moyer is throwing a heck of a lot more fastballs than his usual norm. Which is not a good thing when your fastball maxes out at about 82 mph.
Ump Bump

To address one of the issues floating around the Moyersphere in the wake of his angry comments yesterday, yes, his contract is laden with incentives based on innings-pitched and appearanced. But no, the team was not likely in any way influenced by money when it decided to bump Moyer out of the rotation.
Philly

Jamie Moyer is a man without answers these days.

Daric Barton (Athletics):
Daric Barton, who was put on the disabled list on July 28 with a strained left hamstring, is busy rehabbing his injury and, according to Oakland assistant general manager David Forst, "should be in a game tomorrow in Arizona."

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
When you're Dan Haren, you set your standards, and in turn the expectations of others, very high.

So a couple of so-so outings in a row raises some eyebrows.

Jeff Weaver (Dodgers):
Weaver made it through three scoreless innings and 61 pitches, pulling off a great escape in the second when the Giants loaded the bases with no outs and didn't score.

Jack Wilson (Mariners):
Mariners shortstop Jack Wilson aggravated his left hamstring and departed after the third inning. He will be re-evaluated on Thursday.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-8-09: Ben Johnson Signs Deal; Clayton Mortensen To Make First MLB Start; Sean Danielson Activated; J.D. Drew Big Catch

Sean Danielson (Red Sox):
Johnson is glad to see the return of Sean Danielson, who was activated Thursday after being on the disabled list since June 8 with a calf strain.

“It is nice having him activated because he’s a versatile guy,” Johnson said of the 27-year-old, who was obtained from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade for Joel Pineiro on Oct. 31, 2007. “It allows you to do some other things. Having a guy that can go play all three outfield positions very well and then also if he had to go to second base is a good deal.”
The Providence Journal

Clayton Mortensen (Athletics):
Dallas Braden's continued battle with an infected left ankle may land him on the disabled list after all, but there is an upside. The Oakland A's are going to get some early returns on the trade that sent slugger Matt Holliday to St. Louis.
Athletics Official Site

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
That may be why Branyan, the team's leader in home runs with 25, has battled back issues for a couple of weeks now. Some of these guys simply haven't played this much before. Branyan's career high for plate appearances in a season came in 2002, when he had 435 while appearing in 134 games for the Indians and Reds. In the six seasons between '02 and this year, he hadn't had more than 282 plate appearances in a season, but already had 414 heading into Friday's game against Tampa Bay.
Mariners Official Site

J.D. Drew (Red Sox):
The Yankees just missed winning it in the bottom of the 14th. With two on and one out, Eric Hinske scorched a line drive to right. J.D. Drew raced back and made a brilliant lunging catch, saving what surely would have been a walk-off hit.
Red Sox Official Site

Ben Johnson (Orange County):
The Orange County Flyers of the Golden Baseball League signed him to a contract for the 2009 season.

Michel Hernandez (Rays):
To make room on the 25-man roster for new C Gregg Zaun, the Rays designated for assignment backup Michel Hernandez.

Daric Barton (strained left hamstring) is continuing his rehab in Arizona. Geren said Barton, who is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, will stay there until he is ready to play in a game.
