Bo Hart's Arrival In 2003 Cemented In Cardinals Lore

When Bo Hart lined a pitch into left field for his fourth hit of the Cardinals’ 13-9 win over the Royals on June 28, 2003, Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan looked over at bench coach Joe Pettini.

It's always a treat to have Hall of Famer and former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa on the KMOX airwaves. He ran threw a variety of topics with our sports director Tom Ackerman, which you can listen to in full here:

Mike Shildt's Talks With Tony LaRussa Reveal How Cardinals Manager Is The Sum Of Many Mentors

The Cardinals’ Class AA Springfield affiliate and its manager, with the help of seven shutout innings from young lion Carlos Martinez, had just won a playoff game and taken a step toward Mike Shildt’s third consecutive minor-league title when he walked from the clubhouse down the hallway toward his office. The light was off, as he left it.

If the way the search for a general manager went is any indication, expect the D-backs search for their next manager to be relatively swift with a wide range of candidates for consideration.

Mike Matheny, Year Two: Beyond Trial & Error

The questionnaires were distributed discreetly late last season and returned with no names attached. A third party collected them from the clubhouse and turned them over to a proctor known only to a few. In an era of instant, often in-your-face feedback, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny offered his players secrecy and even the right to abstain from the process he conceived.

Skip Schumaker Interview

New Dodgers 2B and utility man Skip Schumaker made the drive out to camp in Arizona today and was gracious enough to give me a call on his way. He grew up in the Redondo area as a Dodger fan. Although he migrated to Orange County, he never went to an Angel game, spending his time at the beach or at the Dodger games more than anywhere else. Below is an interview about his homecoming. Skip has a good head on his shoulders and is a fantastic addition to our clubhouse.

Jose Oquendo Says Matt Carpenter Ahead Of Skip Schumaker

Cardinals utilityman Matt Carpenter is nearly a week into his private tutorial at second base and coach Jose Oquendo, who is conducting the class, says he is impressed.
Post-Dispatch

It seems every few years the Cardinals need to try an experiment of some kind.  The last two, including this latest one, involves moving a player to the second base position.

Cardinals Seek Speed, Baserunning Ability In Minors

Cardinals third-round pick C.J. McElroy sped by Busch Stadium on Thursday for a brief visit on his way to what he expects soon to be a finalized contract and an assignment to an affiliate. Though he has a Division I football scholarship waiting on him, the son of former big-league pitcher Chuck McElroy said he "wants to follow in my dad's footsteps."

Allen Craig Getting Long Look At Second Base; Shelby Miller Promoted To Double-A; Matt Holliday Hopes To Return To Lineup Sunday; Etc...

What seemed like a novelty two weeks ago is now something the Cardinals are taking quite seriously. Allen Craig, second baseman, is no stunt. It's a very real possibility as the organization continues to search for the best way to get Craig's potent bat into the lineup.
The Cardinals' top prospect, pitcher Shelby Miller, will be promoted to Class AA Springfield next week and join their rotation in time for his next scheduled starter.

St. Louis Cardinals top prospect Shelby Miller noted on Twitter today that he is heading to Double-A Springfield, and farm director John Vuch confirmed it this afternoon.

Nick Punto Goes On Disabled List; Colby Rasmus Inches Back; Brian Tallet Tested; Allen Craig At Second

Cardinals infielder Nick Punto first felt the pain in his elbow last week on a throw against the Chicago Cubs, but it was the increasing hesitation he's felt since that led him to the disabled list for at least two weeks.

Dave Duncan Calls Marty Brennaman Remarks Classless; Nick Punto Scratched

The day after Hall of Fame Cincinnati Reds play-by-play man Marty Brennaman criticized Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan as "infantile" for his rebuke of the Reds during Sunday's postgame celebration, Duncan classified the comments as "pretty classless ... that's it, pretty classless."
The Cardinals will re-evaluate infielder Nick Punto today after he was scratched from Tuesday's start with right elbow discomfort. Allen Craig got the start at second base.

Tuesday Tidbits: The Road To Return

It’s a little bit quieter around here today that it was yesterday afternoon, but we’ve still got plenty going on. The forecast appears to have been a bit inaccurate, since it’s overcast, but we still should be free of rain.

The Huh? Corner: The Cardinals Curious Defense

The only ball that Philadelphia Phillies masher Ryan Howard had a chance to put in play all night came in the ninth inning and he launched it some 400 feet to center field - where Jon Jay sped back to catch it.

Tony LaRussa Is Back On The Job

After the Cardinals' 3-1 victory over Philadelphia on Monday night at Busch Stadium, manager Tony La Russa noted that he was able to see clearly now, which was no small feat considering what he has gone through for the past month.
