Q&A: Mike Elias

Mike Elias joined the Houston Astros in January, 2012 and became their director of amateur scouting in August, 2012. The 31-year-old former Yale University lefthander is a perfect fit for the job. Not only does he possess analytic chops, he’s handy with a radar gun and recognizes raw talent when he sees it. Elias was weened in the St. Louis Cardinals organization as an area scout.

The only championship ring Mike Roberts ever wore was the first he received, a gleaming 1982 World Series ring from his employer, the Cardinals. After scouting several games one day in 2010, he realized the familiar weight on his finger was gone and he wasn’t sure where he misplaced it.

Cardinals Talk With Free Agent Arthur Rhodes

The Cardinals may not have an immediate heir in place for closer Jason Isringhausen's role, but they continue to woo relievers who will handle the innings leading up to the ninth.
