What I Miss About Sports Today - References To Cardinals History During Games

I miss the daily doses of nostalgia. They were reliable and refreshing. Watching a game, listening to a game, going to game, covering a game, every experience includes little links to St. Louis’ past. Casual references to players who once played. Instant analysis of a play by comparing it to a famous play. Looking at looks – from locks to socks – that remind us of how previous Cardinals looked.

Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. offered most of the pertinent statistics about the career of the late Cardinals great, Red Schoendienst, as he spoke Friday at Schoendienst’s funeral Mass at the Cathedral Basilica. The one that seemed to intrigue DeWitt the most, though, was that Hall of Famer Schoendienst, as player, coach, manager and adviser, had spent 67 years in a Cardinals uniform, counting spring trainings, before dying at age 95 last week.

Mid-80's Passed Over?

It’s been great to see St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Chris Carpenter in the dugout with the team the past couple of games. Likewise, Willie McGee has the same effect when he joins the team for pregame activities and Ozzie Smith also has a locker in the coaches room at Busch Stadium with his name on it.
