Rays Often Have Place For Non-Roster Invitees
Jamey Wright is one of several non-roster invitees in camp. Should the veteran right-hander break camp with the team, it would mark the sixth straight season he came to camp as a non-roster invite and made the Opening Day roster.

Four Different Cardinals Relievers With Saves In Last Four Wins
When Trever Miller relieved Jason Motte with two outs in the 11th inning Friday night at Atlanta and collected a save, albeit a shaky one, the 37-year-old became the fourth different pitcher to record a save in the St. Louis Cardinals’ last four victories.

Pitchers Who Out-Hit Their Opponents
Former Cardinal pitcher Dan Haren pulled off a remarkable feat last Tuesday: He had more hits as a batter — three — than he allowed as a pitcher — two. It seemed like a rare enough accomplishment, so we wondered if any pitchers had turned the trick while they were still Cardinals. As it turns out, at least seven have (since 1954):

Ryan Ludwick On World Baseball Classic, Adam Kennedy On Tony LaRussa
Ryan Ludwick has told the organizers of Team USA that he would rather stay with the Cardinals than participate in the World Baseball Classic unless they would like him as a starter on the team. He’s waiting to hear where he fits on their roster, if he fits at all.

Put That Thing Back Where It Came From, Or So Help Me! (Part 2)
Earlier, we looked at what the American League would look like if everybody in the majors returned to the team that originally signed them. Only 10 AL clubs were able to field complete teams. Today, we’ll look at the National League, where just seven franchises can put together legitimate teams.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-19-08: Reyes Released, Rolen Adjusting To Swing, Edmonds Ejected, Wilson Takes Batting Practice, Drew Still Out
Doug Creek:
Doug Creek may have bounced around the Major Leagues -- playing for seven teams in nine seasons -- but the pitching pro turned pro fisherman makes it clear where his anchor lies.
From Player To Fan, Creek Supports Rays
Al Reyes(Free Agent):
Right-hander Al Reyes was released by the New York Mets on Thursday without having thrown a pitch for their struggling bullpen.
Mets Release Reyes, Who Never Threw A Pitch For New York
Scott Rolen(Blue Jays):
No matter how slight the adjustments might appear on the surface, it took a lot for Scott Rolen to alter his stance. The Blue Jays third baseman had to get beyond his own stubbornness in order to change a style he'd used for the past 13 seasons.
Rolen Feeling More Comfortable At Plate
Jeff Suppan(Brewers):
A month ago, the Brewers had too much pitching and were struggling to find innings for relievers who were rusting on the bullpen bench.
Suppan Moved Up To Start Crucial Series
Jim Edmonds(Cubs):
The Cubs had a chance in the 11th with a runner at first and Seth McClung on the mound. Edmonds took a 1-1 pitch that appeared to be outside but was called a strike by home-plate umpire Ed Rapuano. Edmonds complained and was ejected, prompting an argument from Piniella.
Cubs Walk Off On Lee's Single In 12th
Jack Wilson(Pirates):
SS Jack Wilson took batting practice for a second straight day Thursday and remains hopeful of pinch hitting in Sunday’s home season finale against Houston. That could be the final game in a Pirates’ uniform for Wilson, who has spent eight years with Pittsburgh but is likely to be traded over the winter as Pittsburgh continues its youth movement.
News & Notes
Michel Hernandez(Rays):
The Rays placed backup catcher Shawn Riggans on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday night, as the backstop is unlikely to return from the right knee surgery performed on Sept. 10.
Rays Place Riggans On 15-Day D.L.
Troy Percival(Rays):
Rays closer Troy Percival could very well take the hill on Thursday night, but it won't be in the ninth inning.
Rays Ease Percival Back In
J.D. Drew(RedSox):
There was no news to report on how J.D. Drew [stats]’s lengthy recovery from a herniated disc is going. Drew took part in batting practice Wednesday but stiffened up afterward, a frequent occurrence these past few weeks.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 9-2-08: Hernandez Traded; Rundles, Rincon, & Reyes Called Up; Anderson Activated
David Eckstein(Diamondbacks):
David Eckstein has always had great success in red uniforms, and the D-backs hope it's a trend that continues.
Eckstein Happy To Don New Shade Of Red
Rich Rundles(Indians):
When the Indians announce their roster additions from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, it's doubtful Travis Hafner will be one of them.
Hafner Not Likely Among First Callups
Ricardo Rincon, Al Reyes, & Marlon Anderson(Mets):
It will be a long time before the Mets win the National League East championship -- if they do. At least it may seem that way. Their games are apt to be longer now that the roster limit has been increased and their bullpen is a standing-room-only proposition.
Mets Stake 'Pen With Five Hurlers
Michel Hernandez(Rays):
The Rays acquired infielder Jorge Velandia and catcher Michael Hernandez for Triple-A Durham's postseason roster for cash considerations. Velandia was acquired from Cleveland and Hernandez was acquired from Pittsburgh.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-31-08: David Eckstein Getting More Interest; Ricardo Rincon, Al Reyes, & Les Walrond All Possible September Callups
David Eckstein(Blue Jays):
The D-backs have had discussions with the Blue Jays regarding infielder David Eckstein, a baseball source confirmed Saturday, but it's uncertain as to whether a deal can be reached.
D-Backs Interested In Jays' Eckstein
Anthony Reyes(Indians):
Anthony Reyes and Jarrod Washburn set the tone when they became embroiled in a pitchers' duel that lasted into the late innings. Reyes was the only one to blink, serving up a Tug Hulett solo homer in the third.
Choo And Reyes Can't Save Tribe
Ricardo Rincon & Al Reyes(Mets):
Manager Jerry Manuel has theories, many theories. His cerebral nature lends itself to their creation, and so he provides them -- on everything from politics to pitch counts to September callups.
Mets Look Ahead To September Callups
Les Walrond(Phillies):
With Matt Stairs and Scott Eyre already added to the roster after the July 31 Trade Deadline, the Phillies will receive additional reinforcements in two days.
Eaton Among Phillies' Likely Callups
Coco Crisp & J.D. Drew(RedSox):
An assortment of injuries and a potential outbreak of food poisoning left the Red Sox strapped for available bodies last night.
Youkilis, Crisp Latest Sox Casualties
Placido Polanco(Tigers):
Replay history was nearly made in the ninth inning of Saturday night's Tigers-Royals game at Comerica Park.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-21-08: Reyes Finds New Home, Moyer Looks To Improve At Home, Drew Back In Lineup, Polanco Return This Weekend
Al Reyes(Mets):
Proceeding under the knowledge that Billy Wagner might not return to active duty this season, the Mets took another step toward repairing their bullpen void on Wednesday, signing former Rays closer Al Reyes to a Minor League contract and assigning him to Double-A Binghamton. It's a small move that could produce significant results, if Reyes can prove worthy of some late-inning assignments in the big leagues.
In Need Of A Closer, Mets Sign Reyes
Jaime Moyer(Phillies):
Despite having a fine season at age 45, Jamie Moyer needs to get with the Citizens Bank Park program.
Moyer Seeks Better Fate On Home Turf
J.D. Drew(RedSox):
.D. Drew didn't play for the third straight game, missing the entire series with tightness in his lower back. Though he was feeling better, Francona elected to keep Drew out of the lineup since he hadn't participated in baseball activities for three days. The plan was for him to take batting practice and likely be back in the lineup tomorrow in Toronto
0-For-Baltimore
Placido Polanco(Tigers):
Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco doesn't expect his sore right knee to be a problem during this weekend's series at Kansas City. However, he also didn't expect his knee to be a problem in the first place.
