Mitch Harris - an officer, gentleman, and big league baseball player - has been voted the winner of the 26th annual Tony Conigliaro Award. The award, begun in 1990 by the late Red Sox publicist and team historian Dick Bresciani to honor native son Conigliaro, is presented to a major league player who, in Bresciani's words, "has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage that were trademarks of Tony C.''

Painting The Black: Pitching Backward
On a spring day in 1984, Jim Palmer began talking to Jay Howell. The conversation likely started with pleasantries—a comment about the Florida weather, or a crude remark directed toward a female in the stands—but it developed into a dissection of Howell’s approach on the mound. Palmer, the aging Oriole, instructed Howell, then a 28-year-old Yankee, to take advantage of his fastball velocity (90-to-92 miles per hour) and establish the pitch before using his breaking stuff against batters.

What Impact Will New Hitting Coach Carney Lansford Have?
To stimulate the lineup, the Rockies replaced Don Baylor with Lansford, who worked with many of the current Rockies in '07 when he was hitting coach at Triple-A Colorado Springs. His key projects are Iannetta, Helton and third baseman Ian Stewart, who is capable of impressive stretches of power but conversely can have runs of unproductive at-bats. Lansford has already made personal visits with Stewart, Iannetta and outfielder Seth Smith, so he's certainly not holding back in his efforts to make a mark.
